Grand Prize Bar is a place I like to go when I feel like sitting in a dimly lit lounge and drinking a craft cocktail. The cocktails are done well and they often update their drink menu with new concoctions and elixers that you have never heard of. They have a lovely craft beer selection as well. I love that this bar is inside an old house at Bell Park in the Museum District. It is walking distance to the Contemporary Arts museum, among others. There is a pool table and photo booth inside on the bottom floor and I always run in to european Rice students, which will typically make for good conversation about engineering or culture shocks or what-have-you. Typically, when I go to Grand Prize, I head straight up the stairs and try to score a spot on the patio. They used to have a FANTASTIC downstairs patio- its a shame that went away. thanks to the neighbors (boo). I suppose you could call Grand Prize a hipster bar, but lets just say that is appeals to people who like to try new things mixed with their favorite spirits in a laid back environment by a park. Oh yeah, where mustaches are welcomed and so are fixies. It is an easy commute by bike from Montrose or Rice. Its definitely one of my favorite bars in town, and definitely a favorite place to strike up a conversation with a stranger. I have never been disappointed with that.

One of my favorite neighborhood bars. Situated on the corner of Banks and Montrose St. Grand Prize has an unassuming vibe, dark red interior lighting and cheap drinks! Excellent selection of beers on tap and in bottle and a rotating menu of frozen drinks (around $6) Sunday happy hour is fab - wells are under $4 most anytime Ive been there More than anything I like the free wifi and upstairs patio before it gets dark / its a great place to get work done comfortably Parking kind of ebbs and flows as the bar is directly across from a small little park - the earlier you get there the better - there are lots of street parking options and the neighborhood is pretty quiet I finally gave in and tried the Sandy Witch Sandwich shop (inside of Grand Prize and without its own G+ page)TO DIE FOR! Literally I think....? The cooks all wear hooded cloaks and you are sent dark messages on your phone to confirm the status of your order - think cheese and meat laden fries and greasy spoon style burgers but on gourmet buns - fries run anywhere from $3 to $12 depending on how awesome you make them

If there was a local flavor between Montrose and Museum District it would in fact be Grand Prize. Its a little hipster, a little alternative, a dash of yuppie and the upstairs is all kinds of romantic if you want that loungy deep conversation kind of thing. The patio and balcony stand out specifically because you have that slight feel of being at your friends place chilling on their patio. The upstairs balcony has a great gregarious hang out feel. I wish they used that upstairs bar more of often. Though Im sure when they do its wall to wall people (which will add to their charm) Beer selection is awesome. Lots of local brews at a reasonable price. Did I mention a photo booth? If not I am now. Throwback to an 80s montage of that quintessential date photo booth moment. TIP : You can park at the Goodyear station next door when it closes! Gimme a high five for helping the parking problem inner loop Houston has!

This bar is mostly decent. Large selection, muted by the less than friendly service. I believe I left an item there and have been calling their number for over a week now to check. Initially The calls went immediately to voicemail (which was and still is full). Four days ago the number actually began ringing for 30 seconds before the full voicemail box answered. Still no human has ever answered or returned my calls. It sounds like a cell phone but texting it doesnt help. This is aggravating enough to drop their star rating from 4 to 3. Im uncertain if they even deserve 3 stars since theyre completely unreachable and do not care enough to return calls.

This place is a hidden gem.Even though its in the tenderloin, its pretty upscale. Its inside a hotel you cant actually see it from the outside, and I had to ask someone inside the hotel if they knew about Benjamin Cooper. But once youre inside its pretty awesome. They have a standard menu of cocktails! They also make custom cocktails, just tell the bar tender what flavor profiles you like and theyll make you something, and that something will be awesome!! In summary: Good music.Good ambience .Great drinks!!

I only wish this place was slightly more conveniently located. Its just divey enough to feel comfortable the first time you walk in without sketching out your uptight friend. Pool table, pinball, cool upstairs and balcony, cheapish drinks, and maybe the best jukebox in town. Recently lost Sandy Witch Sandwich Co which operated out of their kitchen, which was a tragic loss, but still one of my favorite places to end any night out.

Dang! I feel like I stumbled upon a hidden gem. This place had wonderful cocktails mostly bourbon based delicious oysters and wasnt packed like most of the bars Ive been to in this neighborhood. Its right by the Ruby Sky, but you wouldnt realize it since theres not a sign to mark the location. You just find a black door and walk up the stairs and viola! Its a pseudo speakeasy with great music, cocktails, and atmosphere!

Grand Prize meets all of my qualifications for "excellent neighborhood bar," which include: good beer selection + craft cocktails, great specials, patio space (they have two, and one is covered), pool table, and delicious bar food. Its a great place for after-work drinks. The $5 nachos come with black beans, queso, and at least half an avocado—more than enough for two to share.

I went in there for something different than my regular hang outs in the Montrose. I sat right in the middle of the bar for 15 minutes while the chick bartender made drinks. She neve acknowledged me one time and served customers around me. The dude barback was worthless too becaue he did not acknowledge me either. I walked out.

The look of this place hasnt changed in all the years between the three times Ive been here. Bartenders seemed knowledgeable and could stack orders -- accommodating more than one patron at a time. It wasnt super busy while I was there but Ive been to many places recently where bartenders struggle with far fewer customers.
