Stopped in for a cup of joe...been years since Id been in the neighborhood and remembered the coffee as being way better than the big name chain....boy my memory must be getting bad or this place has really declined. My order was taken and filled by a young african american woman who must hate her job...or at least her customers. Ive had friendly less abrasive service from MLGW and Comcast. She seemed especially put out when for the third time I had to clarify the coffee was TOGO. Im sure the hang out areas consisting of tables and a few sofas is nice, but I needed to be on my way...pleasing the customer is definately secondary for the baristas at Otherlands. Once I finally got my coffee, I discovered a bitter, burnt, cat litter flavored dark beverage in my cup. Although I usually drink it black, I attempted to make it drinkable by adding liberal amounts of sugar, cream, and a few of the other condiments available at the less than sanitary looking self help area. I wish Id by passed the place all together and just gotten gas station coffee around the corner....the swill probably would have been the same, but the price and the service couldnt have been worse. (seriously, stay away when Miss Jenifer is behind the counter.)

I have been to Otherlands several times and look forward to being there again and again after moving back to Memphis later this year. There is a little bit of truth in all the prior reviews, however, even the most sour comment need not be a deterent to seekers of a great cafe. It has a gritty grassroots feel to it, though never is dirty. Yeah, sometimes the workers are on the far side of indifferent, we all have our days, right? Never go anywhere with high expectations, especially a well-established place of fine funk. This is a cafe, not a high-end dining luncheon oasis, not even a casual dining destination. Enjoy it for all and what it is, Otherlands.

For something as simple as a coffee shop, the customer service here is horrible. I went in 5 days ago and simply ordered a bagel sandwich and when I asked for my debit card back, the young man rudely slapped it on the wooden block for me to sign it. Of course I didnt leave him a tip. Then when my sandwich was ready, the girl called it out and tossed it on the counter. She didnt hand it to me or even set it down. She just carelessly tossed it. The owner never speaks to me. It seems as if she only speaks to people that she knows. Strange, considering that Ive spent a lot of money there. My time as Otherlands has passed. Thanks for the memories.

First time customers visiting from Colorado. Our VRBO owner told us about this place which was in walking distance so we were excited to have a great experience. Unfortunately the poor service ruined that opportunity. The two girls behind the counter did not smile, greet, or make us feel welcomed - just no personality at all...maybe thats how Memphis is? (I hope not!). Im bummed because the coffee was great and the vibe otherwise would have been exactly our style. I get its morning and things are busy but I want to feel at least a little like a human being when I go places!

A wonderful, eclectic, welcoming coffee house. This is the perfect place to grab a cup of coffee or a pot of tea (they have an excellent selection) and hang out for a few hours. Its a very casual, low-key environment. The staff is friendly, the sandwiches are good, and the decor is colorful and quite varied. The only thing to be aware of is the relatively narrow parking lot in the back (its about the width of a narrow aisle in a regular parking lot with only enough space for about 20 cars at most). This place is everything that a great coffee shop should be!

If youve worked in coffee, you will not like this place. No trained baristas, so the espresso drinks are real bad (while making my latte, she put the steam wand in the milk pitcher and walked away for 30 seconds and then poured the foaming mass over what must have been espresso.) It really is more of a cafe than a coffee bar. I really liked the vibe of the place... very communal. But the whole building smelled like a bathroom, so I had to leave. It was pretty busy, and obviously a favorite hangout spot for locals, so the food must be good.

Its strange that Im not writing this FROM Otherlands. As one of the first midtown coffee shops to offer free Internet access, Otherlands quickly became a destination spot for the laptop set. They offer great coffee, bagels and sandwiches and a great place to meet people as it is centrally located. Otherlands also has a cool little gift shop in back with cards, gifts, toys & incense. Its a great (smoke-free) place to enjoy live music on the weekends.

Where in there for a pimento cheese sandwich and then last night I check my balance at my bank account and they charge me $84.37. For a pimento cheese sandwich . That will be the last time I go there what a rip off and when I call them they acted as if all no big deal is cool man with that real hippie no apology come in lets make it right . No sense of urgency nor did they seem sincere about the mixup wha

Locals know this is the only place to go for a cuppa joe if you want to run into a third of the people you know in the first ten minutes you are there. Take your out of town friends here to make them think you know everybody and to make them think Memphis actually has a cool, artsy side. And DEFINITELY try the Bagel Sandwich Thingie with an everything bagel and tofutti cream cheese. YUM!

Good food, nice decore, it would be a nice place to chat, relax etc. But the front end staff kill the atmosphere. Not personable. Unfortunately, we also had a problem with our order and a misunderstanding about what we ordered and what we received, and what we paid for. Trying to sort that out was a nightmare! We will not go back. Food 4 stars, decore 4 stars, front end staff 1 star.

The brownie was really yummy, but expensive. Im sure they have a great cook, unless someone else is just commissioning their brownies there. The staff representing the face of the cafe are just on auto pilot, and they arent very nice. It was extremely crowded with people and the place is like a maze. Poorly lit and not extraordinary in any way. I couldnt couldnt even read the menu.

I love this place! Its so eclectic and the vibe is so unique. Its hard to describe such a vibrant and bustling coffee shop. They offer food, beer, coffee, and more. They also have a gift shop that sells knickknacks as kooki as the whole place. The regular drop coffee is delicious, full bodied. Their lattes are also very good; as in the espresso doesnt taste sour or cheap.

Always hit this place up when Im in Memphis. There is a friendly staff and a quirky vibe; and not in a pretentious way. Lots of cool nooks to hide in and a big, dog friendly, patio. Parking kind of sucks, but pretty stellar other than that. My iced Americano is always strong and cold and on the cheap side.
