YUM! Why did it take me so long to come here? Ive always driven by and kept telling myself to stop in, but for some reason, I kept forgetting. But I recently moved into a neighborhood not too far away, and it came up on Yelp one evening. Right after my OH YEAH moment, I hopped in the car and headed over there. Once inside, I was greeted by a nice Japanese man. I told him I was new, and he immediately started explaining the items on the menu. I was torn between the teriyaki chicken and the chicken katsudon. I finally settled on the katsudon. I ordered it to go and once I got home, opened the container to be greeted by perfectly sliced chicken over a bed of white rice. On one side of the container, there were some neatly sliced and aligned vegetables. I also ordered some gyoza, which was cooked perfectly and browned on one side. Everything -- EVERYTHING -- was very well done and delicious. The owner had explained to me that everything was made from scratch and authentic. Well, Ive never been to Japan, so its impossible for me to say whether its truly authentic or not, but Im betting the farm that it is. The owner also explained to me that local teriyaki places use a sauce that is not authentic and is too sweet -- so Im looking forward to trying the teriyaki chicken as soon as possible! I really enjoyed the banter with the owner -- he was giving me a hard time about living in Salem and never visiting his restaurant. But he said, "at least you are here now!" And boy am I glad I finally remembered to stop in. Now I wont be forgetting it anymore. Dont delay, get over to Ramen Ichiban and check it out. The fact that I live so close could be dangerous....

Exquisite taste that holds true to authentic Japanese cuisine. Ive been a customer for nearly a decade and the owners Harry & Kay are great people. If your having a hard time deciding what to order, they will be more than happy recommend one of their most popular dishes in which you cant go wrong. My personal favorites are the Chicken Katsudon, Kalua Pork and their one of a kind Teriyaki Chicken! Will admit there is more to choose from on the menu but once you get hooked its hard to stray from your favorites. And if youre ever in the mood for sushi, they make the best California and vegetable rolls! Need a day in advance notice but you cant go wrong when the roll is about 3" in diameter filled with delicious goodness! If you live in or around Salem, for delicious Japanese food Ramen Ichiban is the best place to go hands down!

My son and I recently had dinner at Ramen Ichiban in South Salem. We had heard good things about the Restaurant and were excited to give them a try. We were not disappointed. We had the Katsudon and the gyoza. Both were excellent and we will definitely make this a regular stop for us. We also had heard that the couple who own and operate the place were very nice. We got there about 15 minutes until closing and still they took the time to explain the menu to us and help us with our selections. We did not feel rushed in any way and they were both extremely gracious and very helpful. Anyone who enjoys gyoza really should go there and try theirs. They were by far the best I have ever eaten.

Ramen Ichiban in S. Salem has the best Tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) and Katsudon (cutlet with special egg sauce) in all of Salem, and the region. I lived in Japan for 4 years, and the Katsudon is my comfort food, the dish I use to gauge a restaraunts quality. The sauce is completely authentic but even the most perfect sauce cant overcome a low-quality meat. Its very apparent that they take no shortcuts on the meat. My only complaint: I would like to see them use classier plates, something that matches the quality of the food. Dont let the small strip mall facade sway you. This place is the real deal and a good value.

I just moved to Salem and wasted no time stopping in and Im so glad I did. Im so in love with the food, but more so, the owners. They are so friendly and welcoming. The food is good, but the couple that owns the place are what truly make this place special for me. If its your first time, they are more than happy to explain the menu and make suggestions. Every time Ive come in, Im warmly greeted and am treated to fantastic conversation which makes the dining experience one of the best for me. If youve been undecided about trying this place, please dont put it off any longer. You wont regret it!

This place is one that is completely overlooked and passed by. Their food is incredible it is all fresh made by the owners (husband and wife Im assuming). Their soups are amazing, and their pot stickers (Gyoza)..to die for!! I am a conosouier of pot stickers and this place has everyone beat hands down. Their spicy chicken is spicy but still has room for flavor. Please do not pass this place up anymore! This is a must try place! Anyone that has been there before is now a regular. That should tell you how good this place is!

The price is too high for the quality. I ordered teriyaki chicken with yakisoba noodles and it was pretty dry. I ordered 3 fried shrimp on the side and that bumped my total to nearly $14! The teriyaki was spicy, which normally wouldve been yummy, but since Im 6 months pregnant and everything gives me heartburn, I was not pleased to have spicy teriyaki chicken. Too bad I took it to go, so I couldnt at least get a different dish. This was an unpleasant experience. Perhaps they were just having an off day.

Every other Japanese restaurant in Salem serves up heavily Americanized Japanese food. Ramen Ichiban serves dishes that are much closer to what you find in Japan. Every single dish is has very nice flavors and textures and the owner is friendly and more than happy to recommend his best dishes. If you live in or around Salem and you want to try real Japanese food, you literally have to go to Ramen Ichiban.

You are very welcomed and appreciated. The owners went above and beyond in the service and food. We went in only because of the great reviews and was not dissapointed. We told the owner that we never ate here and he took the time to point out his most popular dishes that he was the most proud of. Try the katsudon or however you spell it. It was the most amazingv japanese dish Ive ever had.

This restaurant is one of the finest restaurants for Japanese food in Salem, and certainly the most cost-effective. All the dishes are cooked where you can see, and they are delicious, whether you have the katsu, the teriyaki, or something else. The couple who own it are very nice and accommodating. It may not look like much from the outside, but make no mistake--its a wonderful restaurant.

If your looking for authentic Japanese food, Ramen Ichiban is the place! The people are very friendly and the service is wonderful. If you are really hungry, I would recommend (also my personal favorite) the Katsudon with rice. This dish is not only filling but contains a great sauce that blends well with the egg and meat. I definitely would recommend going to this restaurant!
