Walking in the door at Pattie’s home plate is like visiting family that you have not been around in months. You are greeted with smiles and are treated like a guest instead of as a customer. Pattie, who is the namesake of the restaurant, always wants you to feel at home; greeting you with a warm smile and genuine kindness. Our server this evening was Melanie, who also promptly greets all customers as they enter with a kind smile, walked us to our table and within moments was back with our drinks and menus. She recommended the meatloaf dinner, as it is her family’s recipe, and suggested I try it with the mashed potatoes. The meatloaf lived up to and exceeded the recommendation; moist and hitting all the notes of a slow cooked masterpiece. It is difficult to explain the meatloaf other than an incredible experience to make your day better. The onions and peppers were sweated perfectly and then mixed into the meat before going into the oven with their homemade, not willing to share the recipe, sauce. These factors combine to make each bite an experience; making you look forward to the next bite. If you are in north Portland on a Sunday this meal will make your night. This leads you to the best way to end a meal at Pattie’s home plate; the milkshake created just for you exactly to your design. Anything within reason can be created for you here. Two of their bestsellers are the fresh blackberry made to order, and the chocolate mint; a little bit of heaven in a glass. I personally recommend the peanut butter chocolate; rich thick and creamy. (Need a spoon to eat this one) In all if you want a family, like-home environment with staff who genuinely care then you want to eat at Pattie’s home plate.

HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! We arrived on a Saturday afternoon during NoFest, the St. Johns music festival. There were only four tables seated including our party of three, one of which had been served food, another were only having shakes, and a table of seven who had arrived before us and were sipping on drinks already. It took 5 minutes to get the menus and because we were hungry already we ordered our food as soon as the waitress returned 5 minutes later. After about 20 minutes of waiting I inquired about our food, the waitress, who had not been back to check on us, replied it would only be another 5-10 minutes. That time elapsed and our waitress was now nowhere to be seen. I approached another waitress (who was standing at the counter breathing down the cooks neck but not jumping in at all) and she informed me that our ticket had not even been started and that there was nothing she could do about our wait. So you get the full picture, there were three waitresses, 1 cook, a clueless dishwasher and ten people(our party and the other party of 7) waiting for their food for more than a half hour with a promise of it being at least that much longer. The worst part was the lack of care or consideration in response to the complaint. It was a joke we left and went to the friendly Mexican restaurant down the street, got twice as much food for half the price and waited literally only 5 minutes. Greasy burgers and fries arent rocket science and neither is good customer service!

This restaurant/store is the strangest shop in town and totally worth a drop-in. You just never know what kinds of items they will be selling in the back of the restaurant (Avon products, yarn, patterns, Halloween costumes, Easter grass, etc.). Initially attracted by the classic 50s window dressings, we dropped in for breakfast on a Saturday. The food was just okay, coffee terrible, and the service was unfriendly and slow even though clearly the cook was working hard on the small grill. I really wanted to like it more but alas, could not. Ill be back but probably for a random item I might only find there!

Patties is a local gem! Absolutely great people and great food! Theres nothing fancy or yuppie about this place! Great restaurant for a family brunch or for a greasy spoon breakfast after a long night partying, Patties welcomes all kinds :) It can be a little busy on the weekends, but the great waitresses always keep your coffee cup filled and there is a FREE jukebox and toys for the kids while you wait. Breakfast menu is everything from 3 egg omelets & chicken-friend steak to pancakes & waffles. Lunch menu is everything from patty melts & burgers to grilled chicken sandwiches & milkshakes.

Be very skeptical of the food you eat here. Kitchen area is filthy dirty. Walls & ceiling are crumbling. The waitress who also makes the food handled cash & dirty dishes and then proceeded to cook the food without washing hands or wearing gloves! And heres the icing on the cake... I saw a cockroach scurry under the cash register!! Not surprising, since the entire back half of the store is packed with old used junk for sale. This place literally looks like someone put up a grill & a few tables in the middle of a thrift store. I cant believe health inspectors havent shut this place down.

Good food, eclectic background. just sort of a Hub of StJohns.. 10 years ago I lived in StJohns and walked in ordered breakfast, met the people and fell in love. I live in Hawaii now and visit Portland once or twice a year and every time I do I make a special trip thru StJohns to find this little known Cafe and order a "Lumberjack" I have never been disappointed.. If you like quaint little diners, long storys and good coffee you wont be disappointed ether.

First timer here and I love it! Born and raised in Portland and it is damn hard to find a homey diner with cheap eats in Portland. The breakfast burrito was awesome and wasnt 60% potatoes like every other breakfast burrito I have had in this city. The chicken fried steak was also delicious and so was the gravy! dont come here expecting some fancy pants restaurant. Its a homey diner and a damn good one! We might become new regulars

Two stars for atmosphere, but other than that, the quaint little fifties cafe has little going for it. The drinks did arrive but our food was forgotten for over an hour and we were forced to leave back to the car and get a refund. Interesting spot with interesting people, but I cant say a thing about the food. They do offer karaoke, but it too can be summed up with the same word that describes their service, terrible.

The service was horrible. We had to get up and get our own condiments, steal unused silverware from other tables, and ask for coffee after ordering. We never got a water refill. We ordered strawberries on our pancakes, but they were forgotten and never brought, even once the mistake was recognized. The food was okay, but we will not be back. The place was filthy too. The bathroom was filled with flies.

Pretty grimy diner/"gift shop". Very odd place. The breakfast food is very mediocre. Pancakes were chewy (no baking soda?) but eggs, Hash browns, etc were fine. Service is good. Im guessing its just a few regulars and a grandfathered-in lease that somehow keep this place afloat. Seems like the kind of place that was a lot better in its heyday but its now certainly past its prime.
