808 Grinds is a Hawaiian food truck located in Downtown Portland. Before we headed head for lunch, we did a little research about the must try food trucks in Portland. 808 Grinds was consistently mentioned. When we arrived at 11:00AM, they were just opening. Despite this, there was always a couple of customers ahead of us. We quickly glanced at their menu on the side and chose the Da Combo (Shou Chicken and Kalua Pig with a side of rice and macaroni salad). The people working there were diligent and friendly. They also offered their own house made sauces. There were a variety of flavours and we tried 4 of them. The Shoyu chicken. Oh my God. We have never had anything like this before. First, they provided HUGE portions. It was an entire chicken breast on our plate that was pull apart tender. There was distinct ginger taste along with a sweetness that just made the dish. It was, by far, the best chicken weve had at any food truck locations. The Kalua pig was also very tender and had a different sauce/taste. We werent entirely sure what it was but it tasted smoky and savoury. It was great and the portion was very generous as well. The macaroni salad was equally as good. It really helped cleanse your palette after the meats as they were very savoury. The rice was also a welcomed addition that provided additional texture to each bite. 808 Grinds has really opened the door the Hawaiian cuisine for us. Before this, we never had an opportunity or desire to try Hawaiian cuisine but after this, we will be sure to give this cuisine a proper go. We highly recommend the Shoyu chicken and their unique house made sauces.

This place is so good. Everything on the menu is very delicious (except the tofu poke which was a really really unique experience.... very oceany. I love ahi poke with a traditional preparation but this tofu dish was really overwhelming). Make sure you try the Saimin and the Shoyu Chicken. They serve perfect portions with yummy sauces, they have vegetarian options which is wonderful, and their mac salad is bomb. So good. I have to admit though, even more than the friendly service and amazing food, I seriously love the banana cream pie. They have a very talented pastry chef who makes the best banana cream pie I have ever tasted in my life with fresh banana slices, fresh custard (or pudding? Not sure), and a ton of fresh not too sweet real whipped cream on the top of a flaky delicious crust. The guava cake is also on point but that pie........ now I have to go get some after writing about it! Lol. They also cater and make large cakes and pies for sale! A few tips: if you have a limited amount of time make sure you order well in advance and confirm the time your order will be ready. Also, this is not a fast food joint, be patient and dont expect your food to come out in 10 minutes. They are preparing a quality meal from scratch and it takes time. Totally worth it I promise. Another cool thing is that you can now order through Amazon Prime for delivery!!! Yay!

This was my first visit to the 808 Grinds Cafe and what a great first impression. Even though the young man was busy at the counter he smiled and said "Ill be right with you". Great customer service.......check. The Mahi Mahi fish tacos with pineapple salsa were featured on their specials board so I ordered that while my BF ordered the Kalua Pork. The Mahi Mahi fish tacos were out of this world. Each piece of fish seasoned with a slightly spicy seasoning and cooked perfectly. The blend of tang from the pineapple salsa complimented the light spice. BF said upon looking at the large portion size of his Kalua pork dish, "Im bringing half of this home". Needless to say, he managed to eat the whole thing. Good food......check. The dining area was clean and orderly....check. Five stars!

Sitting on the corner, two guys sit in a metal tube. Theres no loud stereo blasting dubstep like you get at KoiFusions truck, and theres no flashy signage to pull you in. But those in the know, will stop and order. What I like to get is a double order (only 2 bucks more) of the kalua pork or a 50/50 order of the pork with the fried chicken. The kalua pork is some of the best you will eat: tender, hot, bursting with flavor. The chicken is like that too, but its twice as hot due to the frying and it has a great seasoned crust that holds that Hawaiian volcano heat inside even during the nastiest of weather. Youll be torn in to finding a seat or just gobbling it down while leaning against the nearby mailbox (which is what I usually do).

This review is for the 808 Grinds that is currently on Washington and 9th Ave in SW Portland. This is simply some of the best Hawaiian BBQ that Ive ever eaten. Their homemade teriyaki sauce is utterly exquisite, the perfect fusion of savory and sweet. They do their own soy sauce (808 Soy sauce) that seems to have some sort of porky goodness to it as well. The Kahlua Pork is indescribably tender and moist. It almost melts in your mouth. Very high quality meat, too ( I dont think its free range, however). The fried chicken is also tender and moist and not-at-all bready or greasy. I have rarely has Hawaiian BBQ this good, even on the Islands.

Finally real Hawaiian food, in a low key, relaxing atmosphere. The staff is super chill, super nice. The food is spot on, no choice is a bad choice. Try everything. How the hell do they make that 808 fried chicken nuggets so stinking moist, yum! Food carts are great, but we now get to sit down and enjoy our meal and even get seranated by Hawaiian jams on Wednesday nights, not so loud you are bothered, just super enjoyable. Did I say that the food is spot on? Tried to take a picture but we couldnt wait.to eat it, trust us. Plug the address into your GPS as its a bit convoluted to get to but just 2 minutes off of 26 around Barnes exit.

First of all, I am friends of the owners so I am biased. That being said, I love the Hawaiian food that comes from 808 Grinds. Roxys use to be my go to, but after their kitchen fire it hasnt quite been the same. 808 Grinds is the best Hawaiian food in Portland, similarly to how Kauai Family Restaurant is my favorite in Seattle. It is solid food. Plus their awards speak for themselves. 808 Grinds is always among the top food trucks in Portland. This restaurant brings the exact same delicious food and you have a great place to sit. Plus there are extra offerings that a brick and mortar location can offer. More desserts, for example.

Hawaiian food! I visited the newly-opened 808 grind in Cedar Hills the other morning. The exterior was a bit camouflaged into the exterior of the old Cedar Hills Mall. While the exterior welcomes a bit of updating, the interior 808 grind Cafe is shockingly warm and inviting. The menu was direct and loaded with exactly what I would expect for a Hawaiian plate restaurant. Like the way you can tell the quality of a Chinese restaurant by the taste of their fried rice, or Mexican restaurant by their beans and / or rice, 808 grind Cafe nailed it with their macaroni salad. This will be one of my new Westside stops!
