My family relocated to Lakewood when I was 3 or so, and - though I dont remember, Golden Gate Restaurant was where we had our first meal as Lakewood citizens. Now, over 25 years later, even though Ive moved from Lakewood - I will still go out of my way to pick up an order from Golden Gate. I am always happy to see that the same family still owns & runs the place today - and they still recognize me, happily greeting me every time. You couldnt ask for more hospitable service, to say the least. They are one of the very few oriental restaurants of Lakewood & Clevelands Far-West Side that is actually family owned, by the same family, after nearly 3 decades, and their own authentic family recipes have never compromised or declined in quality. I can love that the same young girl whom was my server countless times since we both were teenagers is the courteously kind lady whom still remembers me and serves me to this day. Its like my "Cheers", and they really do know my name. Its my favorite place to dine in. The comfortable atmosphere, the charming decor, the hospitable service, and welcoming staff alone have kept me coming back for decades now - and thats not even mentioning the food. The menu is impressively varied in every way, including price, portion sizes, and combinations - featuring Szechuan, Hunan, and Cantonese cuisines just to name a few - even American (sometimes a stubborn kid just wants a hamburger & fries). When it comes to the basics of chinese dining they set the gold standard. I always get a quart of their bar-none wonton soup with a bag of shrimp chips on the side when Im feeling under the weather. Attention local "chinese" fast-food delivery chains - this is what wonton soup is supposed to be! Not to mention that their egg rolls are never a disappointment either. I especially enjoy the vegetable egg rolls (Im not a seafood person & the regular egg rolls have tiny shrimp in them). They are both excellent nonetheless, and I know that they offer a 5 egg roll deal every Friday for either $5 or $6, and its so worth it (dont forget the sweet ń sour sauce). And of course the pork or house fried rice is excellent too. Those three chinese food standards alone can make for a fulfilling meal (followed by a cup or two of oolong tea. Not green tea. Remember, OOLONG TEA). Golden Gates menu is so extensive that I actually feel like my simple tastes depicted in this review dont even do the restaurant justice. You really have to look for yourself, because they have a lot of entrées I cant even remember. I can tell you that they have their lo mein noodles down to a science, the chow mein & chop suey are always on point as well. I love the beef with whatever - beef w/broccoli - beef w/snow pea pods - beef w/chinese vegetables, etc... Go for the chicken subgum chow mein combo for a generous and delicious lunch at a more than fair price, or step it up with the szechuan chicken, sesame chicken, general tsos chicken, or my favorite - the sweet n sour chicken... The moo goo gai pan also promises delicious tender chicken breast slices. They make some addictive chinese spare ribs as well. Dont be afraid to ask for substitutions or additions, I almost always end up ordering extra streamed broccoli or snow pea pods to add to my entree, or even just on the side (Im a sucker for perfectly steamed, crispy, flavorful greens). I recommend going with a couple people and splitting a family platter, youll end up with a little bit of everything (well, more than a little bit actually, more like alot a bit of everything). Get yourselves a padded corner booth and take your time, keep the oolong tea coming, maybe a tsing tao beer or two, and almond cookies for desert - if you even have room. Bring a healthy appetite, youll need it! And they are open late on Friday & Saturday, so its a perfect choice for you and your friends to curb your herbally stimulated hungering. Super affordable, overtly generous, and served smilingly. So stop reading my babble and go eat at Golden Gate already!

Nasty. The chicken lo mein, beef and chicken & the wonton soup had absolutely no flavor! I had to douse it all in soy sauce just to get a little taste. The general tsos sauce tasted like bbq sauce and the broccoli tasted dirty! We thought it was going to be great based on previous reviews, but dont be fooled! I only tried them because my favorite place in Lakewood doesnt open until 4. Go to Panda Wok! Dont waste your calories here, lol.

The Governors Chicken was so tender it split in half when i picked it up with the fork...family of 2 meal was enough for 3+ and the GC wasnt even apart of the listed items for family pick2 meals but they made a special substitution for my order anyway for an $. The egg rolls are the best Ive had in Lakewood...i dont typically write reviews but these folks certainly deserve a recommendation. -BG

Place used to be the best in Lakewood, one fortune cookie for us when we ordered two of everything, a mess with non sealable containers so my dinner was partly in the bag, and the time was doubke what was quoted. Orange slices for dessert for the family platters?? Place should get their act together!

I have always had a good meal from this restaurant, I have recommended it to friends and they also had a good meal from here. Is it authentic Chinese? No but is authentic Americanized Chinese ? Sure is. And its very very good. Great prices also. Plus the ladies at the counter are really nice.

I always ordered take out, so I cant say much about the service, but I was satisfied. Greasy Americanized Chinese cuisine is not hard to come by in Lakewood. This is the best place to go if you dont mind picking it up. Try the lo mein and the wonton soup. Skip the egg rolls.

Im a vegetarian and this place is a must! Definitely try the vegetable fried rice, vegetable lo mein, spring rolls and sweet and sour tofu. Its not on the menu, but they always make it for us. Just be sure to ask for it cut extra thin and cooked extra well. Delish!

This is a below average Chinese place in my opinion. I didnt really like anything me or my friends tried, and the service was rough too on our visit. And obviously no one goes here for the atmosphere. So if Im in Lakewood, this is not where Im heading.

This was the best place to get Chinese food. Never going here again. Had to take everything back for a refund because the food smelled like urine. Thinking on contacting the health department.

The food was horrible... Chicken was undercooked ,the crabragon and egg rolls was over cooked (burnt) also asked for extra sauce and they put none in the bag. Would NOT recommend this place!
