We just ate dinner here in late April 2016. It is a small place, but welcoming. Our food was excellent. My wife and I both had grilled mahi, which was great. I had grilled mahi earlier in the week at a higher priced establishment in Rodanthe that did not even come close to stacking up to Top Dogs quality and price. All of our food was cooked perfectly. They even brought our kids meals out a few minutes before the adults. This may sound odd, but that is one of the best things we think a restaurant can do. It helps keep the kids quiet and calm! We had a party of 4 adults and 2 kids, and most of the other tables were filled as well. The timing and quality of service was top notch. Now to the comments about a no firearms policy and other stuff along those lines... Just walking in and being seated, the restaurant has a "welcome to our home," caring atmosphere. It felt like the waiter ran the restaurant as if it was his whole life. I have the sneaking suspicion he owns the restaurant either partially or fully. If you know how to read well enough to read the menu, read it all. This includes the 5 or 6 lines at the bottom that explain food cooking temps, noisy kids, obnoxious customers, and their right to refuse service to anyone at their discretion. Some might find comments like this bordering on rude, but I see it as honest, hard working people making a living doing what they love. Yes, there is a sign on the doors about not bringing in firearms with the exception of law enforcement. Respect their rules or eat somewhere else, but you are the one(s) missing out. Top Dog Cafe has earned our respect with its fantastic food and honest and caring atmosphere.

Didnt see the "wait outside at top of ramp to be seated" sign amongst all the other signs posted on the door....went inside - no hostess to seat or ask where we could sit so we found a table and sat down. (1st timers and last timers). Very rude waiter came over and told us we were supposed to wait outside at the top of the ramp for seating - told him we didnt see the sign and we were sorry....no reply from him at all except "what do you want to drink" - very rude the rest of our visit - food is better other places - as is the service. Will never go back - other places with much more polite people who dont care if you missed the sign or not - will be their patrons from now on.

Went here hoping to place an order for takeout and a waitress rudely told me that "if I wanted takeout I can go across the street and get all the takeout I want." So I gladly went over to ACC cafe and picked up great food with great service. Who meanly tells their customers to leave and go to another place? Lost my families service! Not to mention their website rudely lets you know that they are most likely not going to answer the phone because they are just "too busy." And guess what they didnt answer my call to ask if they did takeout...shocker!

Overall this was a moderate experience. Dont plan on going to is business to get out of the heat. It is open air seating. The waiter was covering too many tables to be efficient and attentive. It took 20 minutes for our beverages to arrive and to place our food order. Once our order was placed the food took 45 minutes to come out of the kitchen. Food was average when compared to other restaurants in the area. Price was reasonable. Id give it another chance to to see if this our experience was a fluke.

Walked in and my husband wanted to check out the upstairs to see if we would like to sit up there and was stopped by a server "Can I help you?" We were then asked to wait outside for a table and when we asked if we could sit upstairs we were told "yeah, but its gonna be a while". No AC. Rude service. So we left. A good alternative is Lisas Pizza up the street which is where we ended up. Great service and staff was very friendly and engaging with our children.

We all were very impressed with the food here. Not one complaint. Three of us got the Cajun tuna wrap, myself including and it was great. Others got the fish tacos and prime rib wrap, and everyone thought their meals were great. My wife and I also got the bacon wrapped scallops, which were the best Id ever had. Wish there were more and contemplated taking two orders to go with us! If you want a good island style meal def go here.

We have mixed reviews on Top Dog. My husband had a great sandwich here but when I asked to have the taco salad with chicken instead of beef I was told that they could not do it because they would "have to cut the chicken". I told them that I would cut it if that was the issue and still they would not do it. Even though on their menu it says you can add extras. Not impressed with the management, but the food was fine.

Great food, unique atmosphere, excellent and friendly staff! Be sure to WAIT on the ramp to be seated if the restaurant is full. We saw a couple come and and seat themselves while staff was assisting other patrons. This couple didnt get served and got up and left. The staff wont know youre there if they dont remember seating you. I wish we found this place sooner in our trip!! Awesome little spot!!

Stopped for lunch with a friend I hadnt seen for a while. Catching up at the table took a while and the waiter/cook/owner (?) Was very patiant and accommodating. The Mahi Mahi BLT was great, enough of the fish taste without being overpowering. The chips that came with it were right out of the bag but that was ok since the service and food were excellent. Highly recommend this place

Top dog blows away every other option within 50 miles north or south. i feel silly going to the same place for lunch and dinner every day but the quality here is a clear step above anything else in the area. I recommend the tuna wrap and the daily special. Very flavorful. Nice atmosphere with a great upstairs bar. Mellow environment. Does close a bit early so call first.

This restaurant is by far the best in the tri village. The food is great, the atmosphere is what you would expect from a place like the beach, and its laid back. This place is not a bar and grill, its a cafe so its not a place to go drink yourself to death. Its just a nice place to have some good food and an overall great place to take the family for lunch or dinner!

Worst service I have ever experienced at a restaurant. The waiter was rude and hardly spoke to us the whole time we were there, the wait for our food was ridiculously long. The food was not as good as we thought it wouldve been. Ive heard great things about Top Dog, but I will never go back. The waiter obviously needed some lessons in how to treat customers.
