a group of six of us went there looking for an enjoyable dinner & drinks but ended up with a very awkward and unenjoyable time. we spent well over $200 but felt it was much of a waste due to our poor experience! as soon as we walked in a group of servers and a manager huddled together and immediately started giving us the "look-over", you know, all the way up and then down. i felt extremely uncomfortable at that very moment but was optimistic that it would get better... unfortunately, it only got worse! the food was ok, our server wasnt necessarily unfriendly but certainly not welcoming. then when we were questioning our server about policies, the fake red-head "manager" came over, interrupted us by cutting off a woman in our group mid-sentence and was very rude. she walked by our table and gave "dirty looks" the rest of the night. again, a group of the staff huddled together and were obviously talking about our table- again awkward. i felt like they were spitting in our food or something and then laughing about it as we ate.... we were all taken back by the unprofessionalism in the way the manager in particular and staff handled the situation, so much so that we none of of will ever go back and will be sure to inform others of our poor experience.

This was a complete wast of time and money the food was bad. I could make Mac and cheese out of the box add some cheese and it would taste better than this. The Penni was small and looked like someone put it between 2 pans and sat on the sandwich chicken was over cooked, we were hungry and ate slow the waitress didnt even come to ask us if we needed anything for 20 min we were both done eating, mind you this was at 9 PM and it was slow and we were the only ones sitting inside. service was so slow and awful from walking up to walking out was over an hour and a half. I wish I could add pic so you could see our food

I go to the Southern a lot, especially on Mondays when they have $3 wells and $1 sliders. My friend asked if hed given the bartender a $20 bill and he said no, but my friend knew he was missing one. An hour later when we were leaving the bartender came up to us, laid a $20 on the table, and said "That $20 you were missing was on the floor." Hes always been cool, so we didnt suspect him of anything, but he totally couldve kept that money. Personality AND honesty. A+

Found this place last night while walking around downtown, customers were outside drinking and it looked like a good place to stop and get a beer. Nice friendly welcome by the greeter, she sat us outside and recommended some beers, beers came quick and then our waitress who was great also recommended the pork belly sandwich, so we got that too. The sandwich and the green salad that comes with it was fantastic. All around great place to eat, drink & people watch.

From the solid patio to the dark back bar, the Southern is a great place to put back a few beverages downtown. They are right in the middle of things, so you have easy access to anywhere downtown. When its a bumping weekend, you can usually manage a quick drink in the back bar The Dirty South. They have great sandwiches and some tasty sides - this is a killer late night grub spot.

I ate lunch here on a Friday and it was empty. This surprised me. The speed of service and the presentation of the food was impressive. I had the blackened catfish and grits, and it came out quickly and piping hot...just the way I like it. People need to know that this is great lunch spot during the week! The staff is very friendly and the food is awesome! I will definitely be back!

6 people dining. Chicken was undercooked. Sent it back and still undercooked. Complained to manager, and he said that I ate it (some that was cooked), so I must pay. My alternative was to either not eat or get a different meal after all others were finished with their meals! Also, their coffee after the meal was like tea, served in a glass cup. Will not go back.

My wife went to The Southern this past weekend for desserts and drinks, and had a lovely time. The Old-Fashioned was perfect, and the Brownie a-la Mode was delicious. They use local ingredients, and Tim (the manager) is knowledgeable and warm. I highly recommend The Southern as a must see when in Asheville. Thanks for a great evening!!!

Came in for the Disclaimer Comedy Open Mic and had dinner first...this amazing roast beef sandwich and lobster Mac and cheese. The Mac was piping hot and the sandwich was so good I barely wanted to put it down. The comedy show in the back has some really great comedians and drop-ins from around the country and is worth checking out.

My fiancé and I arrived late into Asheville looking for a place still serving food. The Southern was perfect because they serve up until 1:50 am. We enjoyed sitting on the patio. The food was delicious. My fiancé got the Falafel burger and said it was good. I had the chicken salad sandwich - the bread was to die for.

Lovely meal, dangerously giant portions. Great place to strike up a conversation with bartenders and patrons alike. Like any good southern place, the smart meal starts with some sort of pork and some sort of greens. Potato salad was notable because I dont like potato salad, yet I couldnt stop eating it.

Place was nice. But management pushed our designated drivers off of there premise because they were drinking coffee from a shop down the street out on their patio instead of their alcohol. Lots of places in town to grab a drink, well look for one that is more friendly to designed drivers from now on.

Everything was fine until 2am. The outsourced bouncer crew took over and became aggressive. Not sure why they had to resort to threatening people to get out before something bad happened. We honestly asked for another drink after 2am without knowing the time. A simple reminder would have been fine.

Everything was great. I had the lobster mac and my wife had the tamales and we were both very pleased. The name makes you think of fried chicken but that is far from the truth. The waiter Jason was great. I would recommend this to a friend. Fresh food, great staff, and great atmosphere.

Our bachelorette group of 11 visited here Saturday evening. I have never been treated so rudely by waitresses before. The bartender, Jade, was amazing. They should take notes from her. This was one of many places we visited and by far the worst experience of the night. Will not go back.

Food was good, drinks were good, outside ar a is fairly nice, could use some updating but no complaints. Only reason for 2 stars is the horrible service, server was so slow and never bused any of the dirty appetizer plates or cups off the small table, her tip reflected on it.

Another good place to hangout with co-workers to enjoy a good conversation and not talk about work, good food and ambiance. Some servers lack the skills of their job but I dont give them too much weight. I was there to enjoy my free time and not dwell on small things.
