We entered the restaurant with hopes held high, a group of idealistic patrons looking for a tasty meal. PNG showed promise, so we decided to embark on a dining experience, nay, journey at this New Paltz establishment. Little did we know that over the course of our journey, our hopes, once so elevated, would become as low as the dirty floor of the bathroom at PNG. After being seated we scanned the too-large and overpriced menu for the meal that would fuel our disappointment and dashed dreams. At this point I feel it is important to describe the ambience of the establishment; imagine the Ritz-Carrolton hotel, but now imagine that it has a dingy basement that smells like cigarettes and week old fried food. The lighting can be compared to that of the first scene of The Godfather, where the lighting is used to startle the viewer while creating an atmosphere of unease and an overall sense of darkness. However the restaurant does not have a cool mafia vibe, rather that you cant see what you are eating or who you are dining with. Another important factor to consider is the noise level- conversation is something you expect to hear and have a restaurant, but at this place the music is so loud that you are forced to raise your voice and listen intently to have any sort of conversation. This creates a self perpetuating cycle of voices raising in an attempt to exchange words your chosen company. Needless to say, it is unpleasant and as a result many members of my party exited the restaurant with aching heads. Let us move onto the actual food served at the restaurant, which we received an hour after it was ordered. An entire hour passed. As I mentioned before conversation was incredibly difficult, so much like the owner of the vehicle in the song Car Radio, we sat in silence. When the food finally arrived our weary souls rejoiced! But not for long. After excitedly digging into the crabcakes, I discovered that they reminded me of dry ice; icy and dry. I informed my waitress the state of my crab cakes temperature, she then offered a curt apology and took my plate. I assumed that she would remedy the situation with fresh cakes, however she returned to me momentarily with same plate of crustacean based meat patties. It was my conclusion that she had simply microwaved my plate, but upon further inspection I discovered a few things 1. The plate was not warm 2. The lemons on the plate were not warm 3. The slaw on the plate was not warm 4. The cakes were in the same arrangement as when I sent them back 5. They were still cold From these clues my revised conclusion is that either 1. My food was microwaved for a very brief amount of time Or 2. She took the food and brought it back without doing anything to change the temperature Neither of which I would expect from any respectable restaurant. A few other points of interest include an incredibly rude and impatient waitress who answered questions in a disdainful manner of superiority usually found in middle aged women who manage Sephoras. This same waitress neglected to bring my mother the drink she ordered. She sat there, waiting for a drink that would never come and food that came but left her realizing she wished it never had. She also never returned to refill our water pictures, which sat empty on the table for almost the entire duration of our visit to PNG. The condensation slowly dripped down the plastic walls of the receptacle and perspired onto the table, completely defeating the purpose of something that is designed to contain water. As my fingers weary of typing, I leave you with a question- is the restaurant described above somewhere you want to spend your money, time, or energy? If the answer is yes, I respect your right to have an opposing opinion, but bro, you stupid.

The restaurant was very dirty, especially the bathroom. When walking to the bathroom you can look into the kitchen and see how dirty it is. We were seated by the serving station and there was all kind of table service debris on the floor. Instead of picking up after themselves, the wait staff talked among themselves, busy with the chatter of the day and eating from a plate of food they shared at the serving station. The cooks and dishwasher whose garments were covered with food, came out from time to time to help themselves with beverages at the serving station while checking their phones. The benefit of being accross from the serving station was that if we needed anything, we would call our waiitress by name and she would come serve us. My prime rib, the special of the day. was over salted and my guests salmon was over cooked and dry. After the table next to us left, I watched a waitress take a dishcloth tucked on a shelf and use it to wipe the table clean. She then put the cloth back where she found it. It was never rinsed, washed or replaced after its use. If that dishcloth could talk! If you are looking for the college town atmosphere in a bar/ restaurant, but are not concerned about clean facilities or decent food; this will be you kind of place. PS: It would be helpful for your dining experience to know your waitress/ waiters name.

excellent food ,fine atmosphere, great history, service is S L O W. 25 minutes to get served, and only after I politely inquired, otherwise no communication from the staff. I was then told there was a problem with the following issues: propane in the kitchen, shorthanded kitchen staff, and "everyone came in at the same time". Until I had inquired as to the situation, no one of the staff and said a word, they just let my family sit there for over 20 minutes. Two older ladies at the table next to mine made a similar inquiry (politely I might add) as to why they were waiting so long for their food, they were told of the same issues. One of the ladies asked if it would be along time until they got served. The servers responce was "Its not my fault" I was shocked at the unprofessionalism of the responce, since no one was assessing blame! Neither party(mine or the adjacent booth) were offered any comps, coffee on the house, etc. just an apology after the check was paid I left a generous tip (eight dollars on a fiftytwo dollar bill) because I feel that stiffing the server would not be the "right thing to do" However, the lack of communication, common courtesy, and no attempt to make the customers feel anything but neglected makes me want to take my business elsewhere in the future

Excellent atmosphere. Loud and raucous. Service was great. The food wasnt great, but maybe because it was busy? This place has been around forever. We ordered chili, clam chowder, salads, and a pasta dish that was on special. The chili was so spicy they really need to provide a warning. Also had the fettuccine Alfredo in a bread bowl, which was the special. The noodles and sauce were fine. Strange that they buttered the bread bowl first. Just too heavy. Enjoyed the local beer selection and good service (which usually makes up for not so great food). Will give this place another chance maybe on a night when theyre not so busy.

Great little Tavern in the heart of New Paltz that has decades of history. Its open all day and you can get a great casual meal there, for a snack, a lunch break, or a casual and inexpensive dinner with a large group. There is a heavy college crowd in later evening hours where the building will get crowded, but for the most part, festive and upbeat. There is a full bar, and they stop serving food by 9. It was a great place to frequent during the college years for a night out and to date, appears to continue to be a lively and busy spot. Inexpensive all around, casual, authentic, and happy hour is on Fridays.
