I was mildly disappointed this week after visiting the Anchorage Tavern in Somers Point, NJ on May 19th 2009. Disappointments: I ordered the NY strip steak "medium" and received it crispy on the outside and well on the inside done. The meal comes with two sides and a salad (or soup). I ordered the salad and shared a Crap bisque (which I did not care for). I never received the salad, so the service gets a D- at best. The service (aside form the missing salad) was average until we got our main course, after that it was non existent until the bill which was the last time we saw our waitress. I was glad to see our way out of the crowded dinning room. The Strengths: The atmosphere inside was nice. I enjoyed seeing the decorations in the old style house. A few tables have a view of the water across the street, and there is outdoor dining available for nice weather days. The menu has many eclectic choices for those who love or do not love seafood. Overall, because of the poor service and inability to cook to my order, I can only give it 2 of the 5 stars. I am unlikely to visit the location again. I understand many people have had good experiences and perhaps my waitress was just having a bad night that night. So please go and try, but let the rest of us know. Perhaps the peak of service is over for the anchorage.

Im not sure how this place has any favorable reviews. I trusted the google reviews and was sorely disappointed in this place. The service was slow and the food was awful. I had the shrimp trio--three shrimp prepared in three different ways. I have had better shrimp from a box out of the freezer, which is where I suspect these overcooked, rubbery things came from. I also ordered a Cesar salad to go with my shrimp dinner. It was so tasteless and watery from the wet lettuce that I considered sprinkling salt on it for enhancement. This place is not worth the visit. Dont be fooled by the reviews. This place seems like a prime candidate for the show "Kitchen Nightmares." Would the chef eat and enjoy what was served to me? Probably not, and as such it shouldnt be served to paying customers either.

Had the childrens linguine. Requested white sauce instead of red. Bill came and there was a $2 upcharge. This was not told to us. It had no taste. My child didnt eat halg of it. Ordered shrimp trio no mention on menu of hollandaise sauce but my stuffed shrimp was smothered in it. I do not like hollandaise. I asked to speak with manager. He swore it was all of this was on the menu it was not. Showed it to waitress. I was supposed to read it on the opposite side where they gave description of the stuffed shrimp entre. Which I didnt not read bc thats not what I wanted. He offered no type of resolution to issue just shrugged and gave a snide apology... also the Cole slaw was dry w way too much pepper.

Beautiful place, great location, nice, quiet, enjoyable atmosphere! Me and my boyfriend went on our date to The Anchorage for the first time and Dan was our server, we loved him!! He was truly awesome, attentive and fun! He was treated us very nicely, suggested appetizers and drinks, I was unsure which kind of wine I wanted with my meal and he actually brought me a sample of the one I was debating for! Loved it!! I had the Broiled Shrimp Combination and Mike had the Veal Sampler. Both dishes were delicious and were served to our table in a timely manner!! Love this place!! Well sure be back and ask for Dan!

I am not a local and have been here several times. The place has a great atmosphere/vibe, and great food. I probably would not recommend bringing young children here in the evenings, this place is really for adults. Came during the winter once and had one of the best meals in my life...crab imperial over a portabello mushroom...wow! The bar is hopping in the summer, so it can be difficult to get a seat at the bar, so be prepared to stand. But hey, Id rather stand at a place like this than sit at a dead/boring place. Of course, you can get seated for dinner as well; did I mention the food is great!?

My beautiful wife and I had the opportunity to visit the Somers Point NJ area last weekend. We completely enjoyed our 2-1/2 hour porch rendezvous at Anchorage Tavern which started with a soft shell crab appetizer, local raw clams, and steamed littleneck clams. Of course the Blue Moon drafts in chilled mugs kept flowing and the view of the bay was perfect! We finished with a cup of chowder and a Cobb Salad. The service from Erin was much appreciated as she gave us all the attention we needed as well as our privacy. The overall experience has us looking forward to our return.

I happened to be in the area, looked on this site and thought Id try this place. I like to sit at the bar and eat, chatting up the locals and the bartender. Not here; this is a locals bar; one of those places where theyll tolerate outsiders, but youre last in line for service - that is, theyll wait on you when they have nothing else to do. I give it 3 stars because the waitress was very accommodating and the food was above average for this kind of place. But, if youre one of those who likes to eat at the bar and meet new people, go elsewhere. Bob

Upscale but casual Tavern. Huge menu with a daunting selection. Can be crowded even in the off season. Really enjoyed their grouper franchaise special. New York Strip was OK but not stellar. Nice selection of beers. Happy to see some local Cape May Brewery beers on tap. The early bird specials were a great deal. Included salad, 2 sides, entree, dessert and coffee. Highly recommend the mozzarella stick appetizer. Not just ordinary mozzarella sticks! Staff was kind and attentive. Reasonable prices. Looking forward to trying more of the menu!

Pretty good all around but nothing memorable. Basic lineup if food and drinks. Must be a local watering hole - we dined here in January and I swear conversations stopped when my family and I walked in. And ouster waiter seemed annoyed to have to wait on us (but everyone has a bad day). Looks like it could be a happening place during the season.

One of the best bacon cheeseburgers in the area, a steal at $8.95 with fries! Great views (eating outside on the porch is the best), terrific friendly waitstaff, parking can be a challenge when it gets busy and be prepared for a wait at peak times, but, its worth it. Oh and you MUST try the mozzarella sticks, they are absolutely incredible...

Love going to this restaurant. There is a decent selection of beer as they have some local craft brews. The chicken melt sandwich is a must get for a lunch meal and almost any of the dinner specials are great. Best time to go is early as it can get a bit crowed later on especially in season. They have 2 billiard tables and an outside deck.
