I have eaten at New Tokyo many times since it opened several years ago, but always at the Hibachi Grill area. The food at the Hibachi is fresh, entertaining, and absolutely delicious. I have tried the steak, chicken, the shrimp, while other people I have eaten with have tried the sea bass and the tuna. In both fishes, they said it was among the best they have ever been served. Each meal comes with a soup and salad, and while the orange dressing they put on the salad can either be a little watery or odd, it was still enjoyable. This past Tuesday was my first experience ordering off of the Hibachi menu and sitting at a table. Monday and Tuesday is half off most entrees so it was extremely busy, but we were seated quickly. Myself and my parents ordered a Hibachi Tuna, the Teriyaki Filet Mignon, and the House special Tempura which included shrimp, scallop, crab, and salmon. We also order a beef negimaki appetizer and a california roll to start. The sushi was very nice and my parents who had never tried the Negimaki before were very impressed. Its beef wrapped around scallions with a thick sauce on top, for those who were curious. The Tuna was cooked perfectly, as was the Filet Mignon which was served on top of onions, and I have finally found a restaurant that doesnt over cook filet mignon when I order it medium. The vegetables served with the filet were a bit cold by the time I had gotten to them, but still were crisp. The tempura was fabulous. The coating was very light, and I had never seen salmon prepared that way. It was like a stick of fresh salmon in a panko bread coating. They also included some tempura vegetables, and the sweet potato was excelent. They had a large selection of spirits, though caution should be used by any light weights tempted to try a Cherry Bomb. The Sapporro came in a 22 oz. can which my father greatly enjoyed. The only downside was that the beer and wine selection was fairly pricey, but not unreasonably so. The service was very fast, as we had barely gotten into our appetizers or the soup and salad before the main dishes arrived. We had concerns that the wait might be long, however it came almost too quickly. (Considering how tasty the main dishes were I wasnt complaining). Also the service should take a little more notice of silverware at the tables. We were a party of three, however when they sat us there was only two sets of napkins and chopsticks, but no forks. Once our waitress returned after our appetizers had been served, we were able to switch from "treeware" to "silverware". (I have no problem with chopsticks, thanks to years of practice, while others I have eaten with arent as practiced.) Prices were very good, particularly on the main meals. On a normal weekday or weekend the Filet Mignon would be 20, but on monday/tuesday it drops down to 10! Thats fantastic. You should inquire about what is covered on the half off entree, as I found the "Wok and Grill" section of the menu was not included. The hibachi, the tempura, and the teriyaki, and several sections of the sushi menu are included, but you should ask your server for clarification. All and all I had a fabulous service, again, at New Tokyo. This remains my favorite restaurant I have ever been to.

Over the course of my life, I have taken great joy in visiting a wide array of restaurants and eateries; 1,236 to be exact. If I were to begin the daunting task of arranging these restaurants in order of quality, I would start at the bottom. That is because New Tokyo easily earns the nod for 1,236th place. I went to New Tokyo last Saturday night and was disappointed in every single aspect of the restaurant: food quality, food portion, service and management. First of all, my waitress came to deliver my Spicy Tuna maki and accidentally dropped it onto the table in front of me. As she fumbled, the jolt of the plate hitting the table propelled four pieces of sushi into the air and they landed on the table. The waitress did not ask if I would like this dish to be replaced nor did she apologize. I proceeded to eat it anyways. The sushi tasted as if an amateur culinary student prepared it with mediocre ingredients. Next, our crab rangoons made their way to our table—all four of them. Is that truly a suitable portion of crab rangoons for $7? Not once did the waitress make another appearance at the table as we ate. As the meal came to a conclusion, our waitress suddenly emerged again as we were handed our bills. The bills came with a 20% gratuity tacked on. I’ve heard of a 15 or 18% gratuity, but 20%?! With the knowledge of her predetermined tip, this gave the waitress exactly zero incentive to provide decent service. With all of this in mind, I went to the bar in search of a manager. I didn’t have to look far as the manager was at the bar drinking by herself. I explained how our position to her. Without hesitation, SHE CALLED 911 on us because ‘we threatened to walk out on the bill.’ Never once did we ever even allude to walking out on the bill. The cops arrived and deemed the situation ‘silly’, we paid our bills and we left. AVOID THIS RESTAURANT!!!!!

So disappointing. I enjoy sushi and have dined out for Japanese food many times. So it was disappointing when I came to New Tokyo in Plymouth and had an awful experience. First we had to wait about 15 minutes before a waitress came over. My friend ordered udon noodles with chicken, and i got sushi with vegetable tempura for an appetizer. First, even though I asked for the appetizer, she brought out my friends entree first. And it was creepy - it had the moving fish flakes on top, making it look like it was alive. Im open minded, but this was disgusting. There was nothing on the menu saying it would come with this. My friend was revolted by the smell and appearance. Then I got the appetizer. My brocolli tempura was undercooked. The sushi was pretty good, but definitely overpriced. I only ate a little since my friend was feeling ill, and asked for a box. The waitress packed up the rest of my sushi but did not include condiments (sauce for the tempura, soy sauce, wasabi, ginger). During the whole meal the waitress did not check on us, did not care that my friend obviously did not like her meal, did not re-fill our water, etc. This place sucks. Too bad, cuz we could use a nice sushi place in Plymouth. ***EDIT: I wrote the manager a letter to share our experience. He called me on my cell phone, gave me a deeply sincere apology, and said hed update the menu to let people know about the fish flakes. He also offered to send me a gift card so that Id try it again. You cant really get any better than that, so Ill give them another shot.

Four of us went on a Monday night in April and usually the service is ok and on Monday and Tuesday its a bit of a wait. My waitress "Lizzy" Called me "Special needs" and gave me chop sticks with an elastic on them and said they were for special needs customers and beyond that was all around rude. the people on the same side of the table were appauled and the eight of us waited for two hours for a hibachi chef to come out. Through out the night management was made aware of what was going on and eventually we were each offered a free desert. after a half hour long discussion with the 3 owners I eventually got my tab taken care of for my Fiance and I but my two friends were forced to pay, their tab after being insulted by lizzy as well. Lesson learned. The owners said this happens from time to time and hopefully I can save some of you the time an aggravation. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.
