I only come here for the fried clams, and I happen to know clams. Ive heard the steak tips are also quite good. But really, the clams are where its at. I havent been in over a year, but I would say that this is the best place in Massachusetts to get fried clams. Avoid the Clam Box and Woodmans, which are expensive and touristy; here, the clams are fresh, tender Ipswich clams in a delicious batter fried in a fryer whose oil is clearly changed regularly. They will melt in your mouth. They even taste good the next day. Its pitiable that seafood on the North Shore tends to be worth less than its priced, but if I recall correctly, at Choate you can get a heaping platter of clams for about $10. Ipswich clams are the best in New England, and having eaten clams all over the Eastern Seaboard, I can honestly say that here, right at the source, they are better than the best. The atmosphere is pub-like; anybody expecting anything different is fooling themselves. As for complaints about it not being kid-friendly -- well, I dont really care. Parents should teach their kids to be well-mannered in public as it is. Good on Choate!

The Choate is a great place for lunch, dinner, or just drinks for the game. The food is amazing, the burgers and pub fries are the best around and their Cheesesteak special is out of this world. People who think it is not child friendly probably have obnoxious children, I have never had a problem with service, it has never been anything less than superb. It is agreat place for townies and northshore locals to relax and enjoy some down time. One of the last true authentic American Pubs around and most definitely worth a visit

Honestly, I have NEVER seen so many anti-child signs in a restaurant (or any other venue, for that matter!) Each both has an individual sign warning parents to wrangle their kids so they dont disturb the other patrons. Hell, theres even a joke sign that says "Children left unattended will be sold." Itd be funny, except I think they might actually attempt it! Otherwise, the food was quite tasty and well priced. Its a shame theyre so nasty there!

Been coming here for years and will always come back .. great food ..fast service and great drinks .. just remember its cash only ..and if your in the area for fried clams this is the place... large portions, dug locally, fare price plus your not waiting in line for an hour at some clam shack

Great food, classic bar selections as well as bigger BBQ and seafood entrees. Great mixed drinks and a simple but strong draft list (youll always find the local Ipswich Ale on tap). Nice small town atmosphere, great service from lovely people. Cash only, ATM inside. Get the chowder!

Great local atmosphere. The pub food is generally consistent, but doesnt thrill me. What is great, though, are the local clams when available - washed down with a pitcher of Ipswich Ale, brewed a block away. You cant get much better than that on a hot summer day - and no lines!

Wife and I popped in for a beer and dinner the other night. We both had the haddock, hers baked, mine fried. Both were good, fries and onion rings were great as well. Beer was cold, people friendly and nice atmosphere. We will be back. Been back a dozen times, we are regulars.

I am a native of Ipswich and come back about once per year. I usually go to the Clam Box to get my fried clam "fix", but I was too late on this particular evening last month, so I went to the CBP. The clams were better than the Clam Box or Farnhams (in Essex)!

Great food with a local vibe. Pamm was our server and made us feel loved and appreciated. My wife, myself, a 4 year old daughter, and 2 year old son, basically the table of disasters! Pamm made our lunch awesome, her mom skills came through.

The center of the Ipswich community. Seats are first come first serve. Burgers and onion rings are excellent. A great choice for fried clams when the clam shacks have long lines.
