I have never had such a negative experience at a bookstore. Generally, bookstores are a haven for free thinking and friendly interaction, but my time at Edgartown Books proved just the opposite. I am an adult and when asking about a card game for adults was firmly and loudly scolded by one of the older attendants in front of everyone in the store. She was judgmental and cutting - pretty much yelling at me about inquiring about this game. I was with my younger brother who, while asking about kids books they were all sold out of, was startled by the interaction and became upset about it.

Nice little store. Good selection and well set out, especially the childrens and teens first floor. Loved the staircase! Rather fixed on NOT reading the books before buying, which makes you a little on edge if wanting to check the writing of a new author. Probably this is managements diktat - wouldnt blame staff (seasonal college students from overseas). Personally I managed to browse through a book before buying it for myself, and thorough another for my daughter, which I didnt buy because unsuitable. Nobody stopped me! Would recommend.

While reading to my 4 and 6 year old children in their comfortable, well appointed childrens section I was told to either purchase the book or stop reading to them. A read book is "a used book". This, in a section with chairs for children, and a literal reading nook! We had been there approximately 5 minutes. Never in my life have I been made to feel so unwelcome in ANY store! Would not recommend to anyone. The cashier was also very odd - slow, never smiled, never thanked us.

I had a similarly awful experience in this bookstore with a child. They were very unwelcoming and rude and told us we needed to buy a book if we want to look at it. You are not allowed to look at a book before buying. I have never felt so unwelcome in a store before and was very disappointed.

A most accommodating and well versed staff that provides excellent recommendations on this wonderful island, what else could a person ask for?

The clerk not friendly asked if I was going to buy the book. I told her I was reading through to see if I wanted to get it. Rude.
