I recently had lunch for 6 people here and their seafood was absolutely fantastic. Everything we ordered was flavorful and fresh. We made reservations prior to coming, and when we walked in the hostess was warm and welcoming. The decor is beautiful, with exposed brick walls and unique artwork displayed throughout the restaurant. The restaurant somehow manages to pull off a sophisticated yet casual vibe. The ambiance is one of my favorite parts of the restaurants. Its upscale but cozy at the same time (hard to pull off!).I recently had lunch for 6 people here and their seafood was absolutely fantastic. Everything we ordered was flavorful and fresh. We ordered the Octopus appetizers, local oysters, Artic char, Bouillabaisse, lobster salad, and Salmon Crudo. The quality and freshness to their seafood is astounding. Also they have a huge wine list, I tried the Napa Pinot Noir. Im surprised to see some people complaining about the prices, considering its a select seafood restaurant in the Back Bay. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to try a new seafood restaurant in Boston.

The food, location, ambiance is great. That said, I walked into the Select OYSTER Bar and was not given an option to choose Oysters (which I would have if given the option, I LOVE Oysters). Instead, I was given a menu and when I asked, "is this it" I figured it was "just" a seafood place (as I was told by the concierge at my hotel). When I saw someone else get Oysters, I asked and they said, "oh, yah... We have a different menu for Oysters and realized I didnt get one when I came in (by accident, obviously). When I finished my meal and was handed my bill, I was told that an automatic 20% gratuity is added to the bill. Keep in mind, I sat alone at the bar and the service was mediocre. I always tip over 20%, even when the service is bad!! Adding an auto 20% gratuity to the bill is CHEAP AND TACKY, in my opinion. It says that they dont trust people to be fair and they dont know how to make the right hiring decisions with their staff. This is what it says to me. I am a very generous person when it comes to tipping because I was a server for many years, putting an auto gratuity on the bill eliminates my ability to be generous and I HATE that....

Select Oyster Bar is a nice seafood restaurant overall with a few annoying things about it. To start, when I made the reservation for Select on OpenTable, I was required to leave a credit card number. I eat out a good amount of the time and have never had to do this before. The food is overall pretty great. But, I had some broken shell bit in my raw oysters which is disappointing only when considering how expensive everything is here. With that said, I do recommend the yellowfin tuna dinner as it was excellent. Service is polite and fairly efficient. Yet, the space is frustratingly small. My wife and I were seated at the bar and I literally bumped servers a few times when they were walking behind me just by moving my arms ever so slightly behind my back. No big deal, but annoying. All in all, Select serves good seafood at slightly higher than usual prices which means that despite enjoying the meal I likely not return.

Food and mixed drinks were all exceptional. My group got oysters, tuna Tartar, sardines, clams in white wine broth. I personally am not a big fan of raw fish so I had the clams and sardines but they were exceptional. We also got the Brussel sprouts with bacon which were delicious and i dont ever eat them. I got the seafood bouillabaisse which was also very good. My favorite thing there though was the clams. The briny broth with the crostini wedge was out of this world. Their specialty mixes drinks were fantastic as well. First I got their drink called the sazerac was wonderful but the one that I really enjoyed was called the lions heart. It had elements of citrus but notes of lemon and zest. It was a delicious experience in and of it self. One thing of note...They do not have dessert.

Very enjoyable, very fresh raw bar with inventive cooked seafood dishes. Enjoyed the ceviche, cold crab cake, white anchovies on toast and very good oysters. Halibut was on the edge of overcooked and not crisp enough but still enjoyable. Service was acceptable but not overly attentive, especially when we first sat down. What hurt our evening was our choice of the anjou cocktail - overpowering to say the least - sweet and sour and does not go with raw fish as my friend discovered to her downfall later. Should come with a warning - do not pair with delicate seafood flavors. Overall the seafood is worth it - but very pricey. 3.5 would be a fairer score.

Oysters were so-so (wellfleets, island creek and North Nook?) - not very chilled, a bit uneven in size, shucked only passably and no mignonette served with them - ok, not required but standard and delicious - staff was very pleasant - but it was two of us and they included a 20% gratuity - which they informed us of and you could request be removed by management - but that just seemed rude and awkward - including a gratuity is a weak move. You are three months old - I think you need to grow up a little.

We were just turned away from this place I couldnt believe it. This place came recommended because of the wine and good company. The woman at the door (with a completely open oyster bar) said she didnt have room on a Saturday night for people who wanted wine and "just an oyster." Excuse me, but who knows what we would have ordered? I have never been there. So absolutely rude for no reason. Do not go here if you are new because the more questions you ask the more judgment you receive. Terrible.

Didnt like the mandatory 20% tip even for two people. Dont get the mackerel special...doesnt taste anywhere close to freshly caught mackerel and was a bit overcooked. Biggest disappointment was the prawns a la plancha...there was no wooden board which is what plancha means and there we no mention that the seven slightly overcooked shrimp had heads/shell on and I hate peeling shrimp :-( best parts of the dinner was the vegetables under the mackerel and the octopus starter.

This place is amazing, Its hard to please my dad and his GF. We dont get to see them often since they live out of state so we like to eat well when we are together. Not only was Select accommodating when we had to change our reservation, but the food was off the chats good. Plates were simple and on point, not a lot of fuss just fresh and delicious. Oysters we extremely tasty with a good variety. Thank you for helping make my family evening so wonderful.

We had dinner at the Select Oyster Bar on Wednesday 22 April and it was one of the best dining experiences we had in a while: friendly and competent service and the owner Michael Serpas personal welcome were outstanding!
