It was a tweet from pretty big deal Chris Brogan (who Ive know a pretty long time) that led me to getting a great meal/drinks picked up by a fun new friend (and foodie) who works at Google in Boston/Cambridge. Yep, I took my buddy Dave to "Mingle @ Soma" where we all started with a Margherita and a Wild Mushroom pizza paired with my kicking Dark N Stormy, while Dave had the special house-made fig honey infused Bourbon (he was a fan). The pizza was closer to thick, chewy and crisp in right balance and flavorful. In the place of the usual grease, we had truffle oil! Next, Gnocchi with braised short rib and more wild mushrooms. First time Ive had cube-shaped gnocchi - really well seasoned dish and went great with a Porter from St. Botolph. Dave had Youngs Double Chocolate Stout on tap - said it had right amount of chocolate, not too sweet and better than the similarly branded cans that have nitrous. I had Tuna Tartare (sashimi grade was smooth) on large truffled potato chips. Really good combinations and now that Im thinking clearly, it could have used a squeeze of lemon to hit the citrus sauce up a bit. Our friend from Google Boston ordered almost all of the desserts on the menu which Ill rank top to almost top as: Chocolate Aphrodite; Key Lime Pie, Creme Brulee and then Bread Pudding and I guess the Pumpkin Cheesecake last. Skipping entrees meant that tasting several desserts was decadent, but didnt leave us waddling out and stuffed. Thanks again to our host for keeping us well fed and hydrated. It was nice to meet her friends and family - we almost literally ran into one on the drive over ;). I already recommended Soma to some restaurant workers and my family. Ill be back for sure!

Hungry as hell and needed a few cocktails with the lady. Came in at 930 and there werent many people there. Many empty tables. We stood around waiting for about five minutes to be seated - the hostess ignoring our precense. So we decide to sit at a high top near the bar. Waitresses walk by, Im locking eyes with the hostess who has been ignoring us since we walked in, and also got the attention of the bartender who gave me the "hold on a second" pointer finger. So we are talking and I say "weve been here for 20 minutes and no one has come to even ask us for drinks." So I went up to the hostess and said "hey can we please have some service?" She responds yes right away, sorry didnt see you there! I laughed because we were sitting literally 8 feet away from her and with my large eyebrows it is quite easy to tell if I am trying to get your attention. So after another ten minutes a nice waitress asks us what we want to drink. We put in orders and it took about 15 minutes to get out drinks. Finally the waitress comes with our drinks and hands us menus. She then states "so we only have pizza now because it is past 10:00." I said "miss, we have been here for 35 minutes and after about 20 I had to walk up to the hostess and ask for service." She apologized and stood over us with her pen out waiting for us to give her the order on the spot. I got upset at the pitiful service and wanted to leave but the wife was hungry. We had our mediocre pizza and mediocre over priced drinks and said "well thats never happening again." Clearly they didnt care as they were more focused on counting tips or whatever slackers do while people wait patiently in an empty restaurant.

Ok, so the first mistake was our own for not making a reservation. My fiance and I were told we would have to wait 30 to 45 minutes. No problem. Ended up getting a drink at the bar when a couple seats opened up and we decided to just have dinner at the bar. Got the menus and were then ignored for the first 15 minutes as the bartender served what had to be the regular crowd (first names used and such). See everyone around us get bread while we wait, but whatever, order our appetizer and main course. About 45 minutes later we were told there was a mix-up in the kitchen and that our appetizer would be out shortly and that our drinks would be comped. 15 minutes later and still no bread, we get our app. Decided to end the night there without even trying the appetizer because we had already spent 2 hours waiting for things (again, first part was our fault so not blaming them for that), and who knows how much longer we would have to wait for the main course. Got pizza at a place down the road in the end that was ready in 10 minutes and delicious. Had been meaning to go to Soma for a long time. Was sad we experienced such poor service and didnt even get to try the food.

We went to Soma for the first time and we were NOT impressed. At first things were going well. We received our drinks and appetizers and were satisfied until our meals showed up. Two of the people in our four person party had ordered the Scallops. When the plates came there were only 5 scallops on each! And NO sides! The scallop meals are $24 each! So we paid $48 for 10 scallops. By my calculations thats approximatly $5 a scallop! When the manager came over his excuse was that they were "large" scallops and that they were "higher quality". ????? Were from Maine, we know good scallops when we eat them..... We were given a lump of risotto (cheap!) for our dissatisfaction. We will not return. The service was mediocre and the drinks seemed very weak.

Soma deserves a thoughtful look. The tone of the place is subtle and subdued. Oh there are two TVs in back of the bar. But the audio is turned off. There is background music but it is not blaring at you. You can have a quiet conversation and not have to shout over the general noise level. The food is substantial and tasteful. The wine pours are generous and the labels are well selected. The staff leaves you alone. I would have liked a wider choice of dessert wines by the glass. Aside from that, it is a great respite from the hustle and bustle.

I went to Soma because my husband is starting at a new office in the area. The food was amazing. The servers were efficient and attentive. Our appetizer was the buffalo chicken tenders and, almost three weeks later, my husband and I are still talking about the delicious sauces that they used. I ordered a Blueberry Pomegranate Cosmo, and the drink was delicious, strong, but not too strong, and generous enough to last the meal. I was very impressed and will be back.

Soma is a gem in downtown Beverly. The drink menu is great and there are a lot of options for special cocktails along with local craft beers. You have to try the espresso martini! The pizza is arguably the best Ive had in Boston so far and its the only thing I order when I go! If you live in the city its a trip that is well worth the travel and there are a lot of great things to see on the north shore while youre there.

Treated wondefully from the moment I walked in. The calamari appetizer was HUGE and with the complimentary hummus and bread we filled up before our octopus and soma burger even came out. The entrees were delicious though and we still managed to eat everything along with a shared champagne mojito! No room for dessert but the menu looked amazing! Couldnt recommend this place enough for a medium budget meal out!
