I had been to this restaurant a few times many years ago and it was ok (just ok) then. Now, fast forward about 5 years later. It is less than ok. They give you chips and salsa (if thats what you want to call it...salsa). The warm chips were great. The salsa had a consistency of ketchup but less flavor than ketchup. My daughter and I devoured the chips while we waited for my friend to meet us. While waiting with our empty basket of chips, our waitress never came back to check on us, let alone refill our chips. As soon as my friend arrived, our waitress appeared out of nowhere to take our orders and brought us another basket of chips. Funny, I guess thats their way to save money on the chips....wait til the full party arrives to come back. The food all seems to look alike and taste the same. Its pretty hard to tell a burrito from an enchilada. They taste the same and with the bland sauce and small amount of melted cheese...it left something to be desired. My friend had to ask what shed ordered because we couldnt determine what she had. Her beans looked worst than Taco bells refried beans. My soft shell taco was supposed to be a chicken one, but came as a beef taco. It was too salty and greasy. My chicken enchilada was also salty, but lacked any additional taste. I ordered some to-go food for my husband. I cant really remember what it was when it came because again, all of their food looks the same, but I do remember it had some chicken con queso. They put the con queso in a tin pan (just poured it in there -- not in a separate bowl) and put a burrito or enchilada in that same pan with a lid. They wrapped his taco in aluminum foil. They gave a bag of chips and some other stuff in a Styrofoam bowl that they placed in the bag of chips. Now, why on earth would they use a tin pan as opposed to a Styrofoam container so it could be re-heated when we got home. I know they had Styrofoam containers because they gave my daughter a to-go one for her leftovers. All in all, I dont think we will be going back to El Salto again. The food is just not worth it eventhough we enjoyed the chips.

There are two of these restaurants. An El Salto on Patapsco avenue, and this one. I think this is El Salto II. The food and service at both places has been excellent every time I have eaten at either place. The Food: The food has a different flavor than I am used to. At first, I thought of it as a kind of oiliness, but that isnt it. It is very flavorful, but mild at the same time. Other places just try to put tons of spices on their food making it hot to the taste. spiciness is a poor substitute for flavor in my opinion. In my opinion El Salto has just the right combination of spices to give the food a very nice flavor. The atmosphere: You can tell it is a Mexican restaurant, but the decorations arent over done, or over stated. There is lots of wood in use, and there are neon signs for various beers. The Service: I have been to the one on Patapsco avenue a few times, and this particular one once. That isnt a lot, but I can say that every time I have eaten there, the service has been excellent! Summary: This ends up being my absolute favorite Mexican restaurant. Not that I am a foodie, but I have eaten quite a bit of Mexican food in various restaurants, including Mexico. I rate this place as number 2, and number one was this little restaurant behind the Inn On the Alemeda in Sante Fe, NM. I really like it, and I hope you do too!

This place was recommended by a stranger on a train when they heard us looking for a good Mexican rest. Went with a group of three. each ordered a different menu item. My biggest compliment is that they use quality meat. The chicken is all white and not fatty and not drowned in sauce. The burritos and tacos are really good. Simple American-Mex cuisine. Will definitely be back. So the above review was a few months ago and Ive decided an addendum is needed. Each time Ive been back the food has been luke warm at best and bland. The food comes out disturbingly fast and the rice is very dry and too plain. So, I think my 1st experience there may have been rose colored r/t it being my first time. But, I still think the chicken quality is pretty darn good.

This is my go to place. We drive all the way from Fells Point to eat here when we have that Mexican craving. Love the Carne asada tacos and the chili relleno. Like most Mexican restaurants they do bring the food out a little to fast usually when weve only had a couple stabs at your cheese dip (which is excellent by the way) Only other thing I can think of is not being able to get your check. Once they bring you your food its hard to grab them sometimes it feels like their on break once youve received your food. I dont sit there I just go to the cashier and make him track em down for the check. Seriously thats all minor. They have great food and the staff are very friendly. Love Love this place.

I cant speak to the authenticity of the food here, but El Salto is always delicious. Try the veggie or chicken fajitas, theyre amazing! They arrive sizzling and steaming to your table and the portions are large enough to have another full meal the next day! Decor and atmosphere has been improved a fair bit in recent years, however lighting in the lower seating section is harsh and insulation is poor, meaning youre cold in the winter months and hot in the summer months. El Salto is always clean and tidy, including the restrooms. Service is good but sometimes slow. The great food will keep you coming back; Ive frequented El Salto for about 15 years and I enjoy it a great deal.

We visit about once every couple months & have learned what to expect: the service is pretty good. There are younger servers now that are clearly learning. The salsa....no. You will never visit for the salsa. It is the consistency of ketchup as I read previously & doesnt have much of a taste. Each of us have our favs: burritos, enchiladas, beans, rice, chili reno... these are always good, hot, and theres not a long wait. Im not sure if we visit on the wrong night, but the few times I have tried & retried the margaritas, I have been disappointed. Mine always seem watered down. So we just stick to beer & know what the limitations are.

I dont understand the rave reviews on this place. Sure, their menu is unique for this area, but thats not a good enough reason to overrate them. The food is not bad, but each time I ate here, I never felt as if I got enough food for my money. If Im spending $10 or more, Ive always felt I should be leaving the establishment completely full, but thats something Ive yet to do here. I dont know how authentically Mexican their food is, but in my opinion, theyre only 1 step above Taco Bell. Its a shame too, because with the lack of good Mexican restaurants in the area, El Salto could really make a name for themselves. So far, theyve failed.
