Let’s start with the fact that “the Jagerschnitzel topped with a Jager sauce of fresh mushrooms, onions and herbs” wasn’t as good as the description. The crust was thicker than the meat. The meat was tough. In fact, I believe they served the pork despite my order for Veal. I’ve never had a tougher piece of “Veal” in my life. I’ve spent a total of 8 years in Germany and I can honestly say it’s the worst German food I’ve had. I truly didn’t think you could mess up spatzle. Well I found an establishment that was able to ruin a German staple, spatzle. In addition, the effort to comingle classic German food with classic Maryland delights made the menu choices all seem un-delightful. I elected to pass on desert since the choices seemed to be more American versus German. German cakes tend to have more butter and less sugar than our American versions. I was disappointed to not find any classic brochen (German Hard Rolls) or classic Kuchen (the German word for cake) on the menu. If you want good German food in the Washington DC area skip the Old Stein Inn near Annapolis, MD with their questionable music selects and try Café Mozart in Washington DC. Café Mozart in Washington DC made me feel welcome as an American of color, the food was better, and I got to practice my German skills. I have better opportunities to practice my German when I go to the Amish market. P.S. Dont sit outside in the summer. I had to fight off the fruit flies to try and eat my less than delightful food. Also, calling something German chocolate cake doesnt ensure good German Kuchen.

A group of 6 friends went for the "pig roast" on Sunday, June 8. All of us expected to see/smell a roasting pig on a spit, with a carver dispensing different cuts/slices of meat...WOW! What a disappointment - neither sight nor smell of a roasting pig. AND, on the menu, there were only 2 choices of "pig roast": pulled pork sandwich and pulled pork dinner (southern, not German choices)!!!! Where was the "pig roast" that was advertised? What a total disappointment. In all fairness, the potato pancake appetizer, spaetzle and red cabbage were good, but they could not make up for the disappointment in the pig roast. Needless to say, only ONE person ordered the pulled pork dinner....the rest had other entrees. My husband and I had the pork knuckle which was very good, and another person had the jaegerschnitzle...equally good! But a PIG ROAST??????? NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A note to the owners of OSI: Please consider re-doing what you are calling the "pig roast".....you might get many MORE people to come if, indeed, it were a TRUE pig roast. What a treat THAT would be. As it is now, I would never return for your once a month Sunday "pig roast" since it is NOT a pig roast by any stretch of the imagination.

Hostess needs to learn how to great people. This was our first time here, we walk in there are two ladies at the hostess station and no one ahead of us we waited a few minutes nothing was said so I said hello (politely) they said hi and went back to ignoring us a few more minutes roll by my husband says hello to them still being polite their response was "do you have a reservation?" which came off rude. The place was half empty and not a reservation only kind of place after telling her no and her looking disgusted by the fact we had not made a reservation they seated us which was not a problem because the place was half empty. That being said the wait staff was friendly and quick with refills and checking in on our needs. The food was great but pricey, family of 4- 2 adults and 2 kids with kids ordering from the kids menu, 2 orders of jagerschnitzel, 1 appetizer, 1 beer, 2 sodas and a glass of ice tea cost us $85 before tip. The place was almost empty when we left they had not seated any reservation parties the entire time we were there so if you knew you didnt have any reservations coming in why the heck would that be the first thing out of your mouth j/s.

I cant say how much I love the Old Stein Inn. Its a very special place for me, and anytime I have a special occasion or visitor, we go to Old Stein. The beer is cold and they have a HUGE variety! If you really want something different, ask for their smoke beer. Its my favorite. Ive tried many things on the menu, but the jaegerschnitzel is my favorite. Chef Dirks version is very good, but the traditional with hunter sauce is the best. Also good are the kase (cheese) spatzel, the crab soup, and the Bavarian apple cheese cake. The service is phenomenal and the biergarten is a blast. If you go during the weekend, the place is a party with live German music. Go there, you wont be disappointed! Prosit!

This place used to be outstanding. Not any more. The menu is not the same. The goulash soup tasted like it came from a can. The sauerbraten is NOT even close to being sauerbraten It is just tasteless meat covered in a sauerbraten like gravy. The red cabbage had no flavor. The staff was rude and knows nothing of German cruise. When I told the waiter that sauerbraten should be marinated, he responded that we cant do that here. WHAT? I was stunned! This is so disappointing since this was a such a wonderful restaurant for so many years. To add insult to injury, the bad food is expensive. We need to find a good German restaurant in AA county!

Ive spent nearly a year in southern Germany (Bavaria) off and on for work and every time I come home I begin craving good German food. After trying several places in DC over the years and one in central VA....I finally found the Old Stein Inn. And...it was on point! Excellent pork schnitzel and spaetzle...exactly as served in Bavaria!! My husband had the shwienhaxe and it, too, was tender and perfect. Wow! We found our new favorite restaurant! I wish it was closer to the beltway, but Im more than willing to drive here again and again.

I would call this one of the best German restaurants we have visited. We try to find all of the good places, but none really have that Biergarten feel. From what I understand this place was recently renovated after a fire so both inside and outside are very nice. I would call the food a little more modern take on German cuisine, but everything is very tasty. Good selection of beers and of course the entertainment is always fun on the weekends. I wish we didnt live so far away, we would definitely go more often.

This place was so great! We had the best time here! The food was authentic and very well done. The atmosphere is well crafted to transport you to an old German inn. They even had a harmonica player (this is an Austrian harmonica - more like an accordion)! She came by our table, played for us, told us about her instrument and then sang us a song! Her voice was beautiful. And the wait staff is very genuine, friendly and considerate. We greatly enjoyed our visit, and you should go too!
