I have been hearing about Akbar for a while, so was quite eager to eat there. However, the place did not live up to the hype, the food was indifferent at best, stale at worst. The yoghurt tasted as if it was 2 days old, the vegetables at the buffet were cabbage, potatoes and stale spinach. They had run out of chicken and did not bother to replace it, when we asked the wait staff, we got a shrug of the shoulders (though they did bring us some when we were almost done with our meal). The tandoori chicken was rubbery, naan was soft and gummy, the gulab jamuns were hard. The butter chicken was their saving grace - the curry was as good as I have had anywhere and the rice pudding for desert was really creamy. It is not expensive and I would happily pay more for a good meal - but even $8.95 for such an indifferent buffet is not worth the money. Go to Mughal Garden down the street - and if you are in the mood for a drive - drive out to Columbia to Mango Grove for good Indian food and fantastic service.

We went to this restaurant as The Helmand didnt have reservations till later in the evening. We are experienced Indian food eaters dining at Dawat in NYC and some other very good indian restaurants. In Baltimore there is a very good delivery/take-out place called Kabab Stop (Mt. Washington) that has very good "delivery" type indian food so we were bullish on this sit down place. Overall this is one of the worst indian restaurancts Ive ever been to. The soup is horrible and every single item tastes like salt and cumin. Not sure if Baltimore people even understand what indian food should taste like but the is truely a terrible restaurant. The service is medicore and the food is horrid. I am not sure why there is even one positive review of this restaurant as these must be from people not familiar with Indian food. Stay away unless you like the taste of salt and burnt cumin and enjoy terrilbe service. I give this place a Turkey and wont ever go back.

Have some mercy on yourself and eat anywhere but here. Food is brilliantly pathetic in both taste and quality, and you would wonder if it can be prepared so poorly. People not familiar to Indian food may not be able to judge. I wonder how this place have been rated so high by other users. Could be they were good and have gone bad. Hope its not owner/worker initiated reviews to bring more business. I have never written a review and always felt guilty of not doing my part. However, i couldnt stop myself from writing this....just in case it helps anyone. Moghul is a block away from this restaurant...and their is an Afghan restaurant couple of blocks away. Not sure how they are, but i am sure it can only get better. Lastly, it seems the waiters are generally students. So do tip them even if food or service is bad....or even if you are eating buffet....else they will remind you sternly :)

Ive been here twice and was very disappointed. Ive heard great things about Akbar, but have yet to experience them myself. The first time I ordered a vegetarian dish (Jalfrezi, I believe) for carryout, and was amazed how greasy, mushy and generally subpar it was. The vegetables were clearly canned. I threw most of it out, but decided I must have ordered a bad dish. So I went back with a friend some months later for lunch buffet. Everything was bad except dessert! Naan was stale, rice was chewy, most of the dishes were flavorless and watery, and, again, the vegetables in the vegetarian dishes were canned! I might try again because my friends still insist its good food, but Im beginning to wonder if everyone is crazy. I admit Im comforted to see other bad reviews out there. As it stands now, this place is terrible.

I been eating here quite often lately, only tried dinner though so not sure about the lunch buffet. I have tried various indian restaurants around the area and this one is one of my favorites. The food is pretty tasty and is not so expensive so you get great meal for your buck! The service is not so great but again food is worth it. The vegetable samosas are delicious! The place is cozy for small groups and couples, the background music on the other hand is not good, but when you are having a great dinner and a nice conversation that is not so important.

I am an indian, so I know the indian taste and how Briyani would taste. We ordered chicken Biriyani and Chicken Tikka masala with Nan. The biriyani tasted like mixed of chicken curry and rice. No flavor of biriyani at all. I never had biriyani with curry inside it. I asked the server and he said that is how they make briyani and lot of ppl come their to eat their briyani. It was sounded like he does not care about the feedback. The Chicken Tikka Masala tasted sour - never tasted like that before. Overall a bad experience and will never go there again.

We had our first date at Akbar Restaurant about a year ago and went there 2 weeks ago for our anniversary - its still the same - still the best Indian food Ive ever had anywhere in Maryland!! The service is cordial and prompt, the atmosphere is warm and cozy, the food is to die for!! They have a pretty big menu compared to about 10 of the other ones I have been to. We topped it off with some fresh mango ice cream and called it a night. If you want a romantic tasty meal - I would definitely go there! YUMM!! 5 Stars

ITS A TRAP! ...just kidding, this is decent Indian food, but Im not blown away. I had really high hopes after reading some of the reviews and I feel a bit let down after reading them. Our waitstaff was professional but didnt really seem like he wanted to be there that day, and I just feel like for the same amount of money I can get better Indian food elsewhere. Oh, and I think someone complained about the decor, Id like to respond to that: STOP EATING WALLPAPER. (I am not upset with the decor)

I am an indian, so I know the indian taste. We were very excited to have good dinner. We ordered chicken Biriyani and Chicken Tikka masala with Nan. The biriyani tasted like mixed of chicken curry and rice. No flavor of biriyani at all. I never had biriyani with curry inside it. The Chicken Tikka Masala tasted sour - may be the cook came from south India. Overall a bad experience and will never go there again.

The food was very bad. I hate to dump away any food but this one crush my rules. I paid almost $40 for food that actually was worth about $20 in other excellent Indian restaurant. I called the restaurant to sort things out instead the management refuses to compensate or refund me. No fork or spoon, no napkins, and the rise was NOT indian style rise. Sorry for this review brother.

I hate this place. Overpriced for the quality of the food they serve. People who like the food here have not tried good Indian food. They should try Mughal garden, Tambers or Kumari which are in the same block and will like it way more than Akbar. Kumari has buffet, which will give you a good taste of Indian food. Please try these two restaurants before writing a review about AKBAR
