There’s an old saying that if you concentrate on one thing and do it well, you will succeed. Nichols Worth serves breakfast and only breakfast (6 a.m. – 11 a.m.) and really does it well. The restaurant is small – a dozen or fewer booths and tables plus a bar - but its spotless and tastefully decorated in black, cream and gray with a splash of pale green. Tables, already set with napkin-wrapped silverware and cups and saucers, extend a warm welcome. The best part is the food: that guy in the kitchen - the one you can see through the pass-through busily preparing the orders – sure knows how to cook. Presentation is everything and todays special was a beauty. Eggs perfectly scrambled with diced ham and cheese, potatoes sliced paper thin and pan fried to a nicely browned finish, vine ripened tomatoes, a (giant) biscuit and gravy, a small container of salsa, a dollop of sour cream and surprise! a potato pancake that was silky smooth inside, crispy outside. All for $5.50 (including tax) plus the price of coffee. Nichols Worth has a lot of homemade charm – specials printed on a blackboard, a handwritten menu, and that, combined with the hardworking cook and good food, earned five stars in my book. But weak coffee and an exceptionally slow waiter (it wasnt even crowded) punched the rating down to 4.5. Still, the restaurant deserves kudos for facing off against its giant, deep pocketed competitors, proving that that old adage - concentrating on one thing and doing it well equals success – is really true.
