In our continuing quest to find a good staple Mexican spot, we finally found one that may be worth coming back to. This place actually made me reconsider and lower the ratings of the majority of other Mexican places weve been to - its that good. The journey started with signage outside the restaurant declaring, "Now we open for lunch on Fridays" - Score! The Margaritas to start out were exceptional! No too sweet and good size for $3.75. They had about half a dozen beers including the standard south of the border favorites. The food was excellent - straight up! My better half had the molcajete and it was legit. Ribeye strips, avocado, cheese, onions and a concoction called "cactus salad" were served up in a molcajete (a stone bowl) shaped like a pig! Everything was excellent and the cactus salad strangely complimented the other flavors very nicely - a little like a sweet pico de gallo. I had the tacos al carbon and they too were great. Just he right amount of spice in the sauce and really good meat was the burried treasure within! The waiters were very helpful and quick, in spite of the place being packed the whole time we were there. They made a couple good recommendations in broken English - a plus at any Mexican spot! Great food, great service and another solid restaurant in a small town outside of Iowa City! Aside from Banditos and La Regia, this is the best place in weve found in the area and its worth the trip.

This restaurant is sure to please. Though fairly small (holds 60 people), it is a treasure if you like authentic Mexican food. The recipes are unique and highly flavorful. El Sol stands head and shoulders above the competition in the Iowa City area. Its also just a quick hop from Iowa City and North Liberty. The owners have a great deal of experience in the restaurant business and it shows. The dishes are bursting with flavor and it is obvious how much work they put into their homemade sauces. I would recommend going early or perhaps on a slower day if time is a concern because they do get very busy. Otherwise, its well worth waiting if you need to. The service is top-notch. The staff speaks very good English and has always gotten my order correct. They take the time to make sure the order is understood thoroughly. My favorite dish is the fajitas but they do offer some new dishes and change things up periodically. The descriptions are carefully thought out and accurate so dont hesitate to try something new.

I heard a lot of great reviews and went there for Valentines Day very excited! First it took way to long to get our order in I suppose it was pretty busy. Once we did get our order in the food came quick. I thought our meal was just "ok". the sauce on my enchilada was a bit bitter tasting to me, and my pork Tamale was disappointing. Now we were there for Happy hour and got the 2 for 1 marg. As excited as we were to get this deal we could taste no alcohol. We ordered a separate shot to get a buzz instead. My husband had the steak fajitas and they were delish. I prob wont be going back. Spent $78 on a meal for 4 of us. :( but we had drinks!

My wife and I have eaten there a couple times and have really enjoyed the flavor of their food. Their steak is excellent. Its better than your average Mexican restaurant and they have extremely friendly service. If I can make a recommendation Id say drive from Iowa City to Mt Vernon, eat at Lincoln Cafe, then drive to Palisades Kepler State park, hike for a couple hours, then drive back to Iowa City and stop at El Sol for a delicious dinner. Its a great Saturday in small town Iowa.

Very good standard Americanized Mexican food. Staff is attentive and friendly. Seating is fairly good but can get full as the place is not terribly large. Better than most or all of the Mexican places in nearby Cedar Rapids. Really nice to see the staff at least somewhat interested in what they do which isnt always the case when serving gringos!

We went around 1130 on s Sunday very cute place clean !! The food was the best Mexican food I have had in the state of Iowa I am not kidding from the chips and Salas , chips were thin not to much salt salsa was just right! Then our burritos were amazing with so much flavor all the way through!! Will totally be going back very soon!!

When they first opened thete was a little bit of a wait with new staff and them getting used to everything etc. But Ive been back a few times and just love it there! I love the food, their Margs are the best and I love the owner, he is AWESOME!!!
