I visited Galena/Dubuque with my 12 old son and I always enjoy taking him for breakfast. After a few internet searches we decided to stop at the Sunshine Family Restaurant. The staff were very friendly and attentive but there seemed to be a dark cloud casting shadows on an otherwise sunny place. There was a stern man hovering around the middle of the restaurant. I tried to figure out his connection to the place and decided that he is probably the owner. Turns out he is. He did not smile, ever. He seemed really annoyed by everything and everyone. No matter who came in the door, he directed them here or there but he didnt really do anything constructive. He just looked extremely grumpy and annoyed with his employees who were working hard and doing their best to please customers. The food arrived in a flash, very fast and the server was exceptionally friendly. As we left I asked her if he was the owner and if hes always like that. She acknowledged that shes put up with it for as long as hes been there. (Shes been there six years) She said she just got used to it. Shameful that someone in the service industry acts like that in public. I dont know his circumstances and I dont want to assume anything but this I know, doom, gloom and grumpiness should have no place at a place called the Sunshine Family Restaurant. Shame on you! Stay home and let your workers do their job. If you go, tip the employees well, they deserve it.

Edit: Its 5 months later and I still have nightmares about how awful our experience was. Maybe the worst dining experience of my life. Food was incredibly salty. We came late morning and had salad/sandwiches. I would suggest staying away from the soup. It was the consistency of condensed cream of mushroom from a can with twice as much salt as necessary. Service was poor- 4 people got 3 waters and 2 straws. Server forgot our salad dressing and the syrup for the table behind us. My salad was iceberg lettuce with some lunch meat, over cooked hardboiled eggs, grainy flavorless tomatoes, American cheese, and what must have been half of an onion- with the outermost layer still on (not the paper but the first dried out layer underneath). Everyone else got sandwiches. The Reuben was by far the best, but still underwhelming. French dip came without the dip, and my wifes melt was bland at best. Maybe we should have stuck to the breakfast menu? They have parking in the back which was nice.

Wait staff is friendly, but the manager was a slave driver. He was mean, aggressive, temperamental, and unfriendly. He would scold the staff in front of customers. They are unaccommodating to substitutes (like substitute french toast for pancakes), and theres no exceptions. Our waitress told us that once she substituted for a customer, and management made her pay for it herself. Seriously messed up. Food was good... but I wont encourage one to visit. (PS, the manager went around with the top half of his shirt unbuttoned, with his chest hair hanging out. This is a health hazard.)

We went here on Labor day morning and really enjoyed ourselves. The food and service were great. I got the southern surprise (I think thats what it was called), biscuits and gravy, eggs, etc. Everything irn the plate was delicious, the biscuits were fluffy and the gravy was thick and plenty of it. My wife got the blueberry waffle, which was not good, WAY too much blueberry jam on top, making it soggy. The waitress immediately replaced it with a regular waffle and my wife loved it (so did I

I would not rate a restaurant based solely on bad service from a single waitress. In this case the waitress (Debbie) earned five stars for the restaurant. The food was average although Debbie did say they had great ham and I agree with her. She also accommodated my very picky selection and had no problems. I generally do have problems with that based on my specific keto diet (no carb). Debbie could easily work at a high-end restaurant and fit right in. If you go by sunshine and ask for her.

This place was amazing! We will never drive through Dubuque without stopping here for breakfast again. The place was packed and we were greeted at the door immediately and waited about 1 minute for a table and despite being packed, had our food in 5 to 10 minutes. The food was the best food weve ever been served and the portions were more than enough! I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone and everyone! Super fast, great service, and even better food!

We just had a fabulous experience at the Sunshine Family Restaurant! Good service, food, staff and much more! They are a diner to be reckoned with......like a well-oiled machine! Extremely friendly, attentive, hard-working, and all with a smile on their faces that makes you feel like you are part of that family! We recommend Sunshine Family Restaurant 100%!!!

Great quick service and didnt wait in line in a full house restaurant on a Sunday morning... Food was served in generous portions and tasted good. Simple and quick. I would come back again if I came through the town again in the future. The parking space needs to be expanded. Had difficulty parking the car with 3 others trying to exit their parking spaces.

Down home, value for the dollar, decent parking, nice folks, large menu, and very inexpensive pricing! Most items on the menu under 7 bucks; lunch special is sandwich, cup of soup, drink, and fries for under 6 bucks! Cheap! Nothing on the fancy, upscale menu here, just down home like cooking. If youre looking back to basics dining, this is for you!

We stopped here on our way through - the whole experience was fantastic! We have two little ones and the waitress took their order first and their food was out before either started fussing! The food was delicious, portions were large an our family of 4 ate for under $30! Definitely would recommend to anyone?

This place has nice portions, a good environment and great desserts. One thing I have to mention is that the soups are very salty. Dont get a soup if youre on a low salt diet. The restaurant has parking on the side so do not worry about pay parking or parking decks unless side lot is full.

We were in Dubuque for the first time and will be returning monthly for the next couple of years. We gave Sunnyside a try. The service is great, prices were more than fair, the food was good and the place was clean. We couldnt ask for more. We will be back every time were in Dubuque.

We were given fast and friendly service. Even after we split our drinks there was no grumbling from servers. They were accomadating to any requests and the food was great. We were shocked when our food was already on our table, we felt as if we had just ordered. We will be back.

Fantastic Sunday breakfast! Our server, Darlene, was exceptional - fast service, catered to the kids and remembered everything. She also was conscious of our kids and babies when pouring coffee - she protected them and we really appreciated her awareness!

I no longer live in Dubuque but I come here with my family from time to time and Im always blown away by the rock-bottom prices. You get a lot of food for the price and its quite good. I can tell others feel the same way because its always packed.
