CASH ONLY. Let me repeat that CASH ONLY. Which I found out about at check out. Thankfully I had "Almost" enough change in the crooks and crannies of my car to pay the bill. I travel a lot and seldom carry cash. They were pleasant and understanding about my lack of funds, but it was a humiliating experience. Especially since I dont know my pin number. Never needed it before. DECOR: The exterior looks like an old Stuckeys. The interior is decorated in a stained plywood country kitchen motif with lots of old Mixing bowls and other kitchen paraphernalia on the shelves. The wall mounted table tops appear to be hinged for lifting and cleaning after they close. My Menu: Fried Clam Strips - cooked a little long but "almost" right. . Baked Beans - A combination of Navy and other beans that tasted like black eyed peas. Maybe they should call it a baked bean salad. Sliced Beets - thin, wilted soaked no flavor and starting to change color and bleach out towards white. Barely touched them Waiter: Friendly, prompt, courteous. Coffee refills. ONE! At $2.25 for coffee one refill is strange. Six others working there setting up for the evening diner rush, Only three other tables occupied and ONLY one coffee refill ATM Machine: Located by bathrooms and charges $2.75 per transaction, Then dont forget your bank will charge at least 4% for a cash advance on a debit card. But if you use a "Credit Card" for a Cash Advance that can cost the unsuspecting up to $50.00 plus the ATM owners $2.75. The owners of this restaurant should learn about "The Square" or "Paypal". However, my biggest disappointment was that the last time I was there was with my Late Uncle L.D., His granddaughter Jill and Jills friend Taylor. We were there to move Jill back from Greenville College and had such a good time. Maybe I was expecting to much this time or maybe the first time was so nice because of the company I was in that it overshadowed the food and service the last time.

From the Oxford Dictionary Definition of pie noun a baked dish of fruit, or meat and vegetables, typically with a top and base of pastry. In 2010 I did a trek through IL with a pack. One afternoon when I was especially worn out form hiking, I saw a sign advertising Blue Springs Cafes foot high pie. For the next three hours I used the image of a foot high pie as my motivation. What kind of pie would I get? Apple? Some form of berry? Id definitely get a coffee with whatever I ended up buying. After three hours of hot sun, I finally arrived at Blue Springs Cafe. I was asked, what I would like. I asked about their pies. It was here, that I learned of this cafes treachery. Their foot high pies" are nothing more than pudding and fluff. Look back to the definition of pie. Baked fruit, or meat and vegetables. Not pudding and meringue. Your entire establishment is built upon a lie. I expected a solid 12 inches of fruit filling. What I received was something I would expect from a church potluck, not the world famous foot high pie. On a side note, the server refilled my coffee only once. Shame on you Blue Springs Cafe. Your reputation is built on a mountain of lies. One day, I shall create an actual foot high pie, filled with the sweet fruits of this earth, send you a picture, and let you know how pathetic your claims truly are.

I have trouble working out a rating, but 3 stars is all I can give. The food was 5 star quality - we had meat loaf and this, the mashed potato and other sides were excellent, real "home made" quality, all served "family style" But I have to reduce the stars for 3 other issues; First, we had never been there before, so we waited, were seated, and waited for our waitress talked to us we found out there were no menus, only the things on the wall posters - we were happy with the food, but there should have been something on the way in to tell us what sort of restaurant it was. Second, when the sides were put on our table, a bottle was placed there too. After we had eaten the biscuits we found out this was apple butter, and so we didnt get a chance t try it with the bread - all it would have taken was an explanation! Third, only when we got to pay did we find out they only took cash or checks. I wondered if we had missed a sign, but I checked the way out, no, there is NO indication that they only take cash! I might understand that in an out-of-the way diner, but somewhere that advertises on the Interstate? And why not tell us before we eat? Now I think about it, all 3 of my negatives are really about communicating with their diners - shame when the food is so good!

3 friend of mine and I went to the Blue Springs Cafe after reading the great reviews it got. Theyre all true!! The food was delicious, and you will not go hungry...sadly, we got so full we couldnt try their foot high pies. The decor was great, the food was great, and when more customers near the end of the night were leaving the service was great!! The service did start off really slow, but picked up as soon as more customers finished their dining experience due to how many waiters/waitresses they had. I really have no complaints. They start off with bottomless beets, cole slaw, and biscuits. We then ordered our meat off the menus that are located on the wall while enjoying those starters that were included in the price. The bottomless sides came out with the meat and they consisted of mashed potatoes, green beans, and bowl of gravy (for your meat, biscuits, & mashed potatoes). This is good old fresh Country Home Cooking...with that said BRING CASH OR CHECK. A lot of the new customers did not know they dont take Credit Card. If you do forget to bring cash, they do have an ATM. All 4 of us agree that we WILL come back again...and again!!

While this rating is simply based on the pie, all we can say is that the foot tall pies are well worth stopping for! In an attempt to lure us in based on signage on the interstate was totally successful, especially the sign that announced theyd been featured on the food network. The place sit about 200 feet off the interstate and it totally unassuming. You walk in and are greeted by the pie counter where something like 15 pie options are at your fingertips. The ones worth stopping for, IMO, are quite literally a foot tall with the bulk being Merengue. They are spectacular! We tried a chocolate one and it was delicious - dark chocolate as the base with a nice crust and the 9 inches of Merengue brought it as close to heaven a pie can get! They only take cash or check, but do have an ATM if youre like 80% of the world now and dont carry cash. A great roadside stop off if youre in the area on your way to St. Louie.

We have driven by here many times and finally stopped, and were rewarded with a great meal! We were not interested in the foot high pie because we dont care for merengue, so we were not sure what to expect. We had the walleye fillets with mashed potatoes and green beans (I had the beets) and it was all great. We were here at lunch time, so we just had the lunch plates that come with 2 sides. The atmosphere is of an old country diner with tables and wooden booths (not the most comfortable seats, but once the food comes you wont think about that). We did try a slice of apple pie and it was above average. The prices were reasonable and the place was very clean. The restrooms seemed to be recently updated and were nice. Overall it was a good experience and we will stop again.
