I see comments in these reviews about the lack of Japanese service, off-taste, etc. Why are you surprised? Most of the Boise Japanese restaurants are not owned by Japanese! Most are run by Chinese or Korean owners! If you want the real thing, go to L.A., Portland, New York, Chicago, etc. Small cities dont have the Japanese cooks or a large enough population of local Japanese customers to support them. Fujiyama is Chinese-owned, but they are surprisingly good for a non-Japanese owner. I spent years in Japan and Hong Kong, so I know about the taste and service, and my wife is native Japanese, and cooked for me over 40 years. Many Americans have a distorted idea of Japanese food. In Japan, sushi is a snack food, usually partaken with beer or sake, in a bar atmosphere, just like going to a bar. It is a social event. Most Japanese eat a variety of hot and cold food, and a lot of noodles, cooked fish, and vegetables. The way we look at sushi is like a foreigner thinking that Americans eat nothing but hot dogs and hamburgers every day! Shige and Sono Bana are authentic Japanese-owned restaurants. Shige was originally a standard Japanese restaurant, but the single-minded craze for sushi convinced them to make an extra room for sushi. Sono Bana is more like a typical neighborhood restaurant in Japan. Try some Japanese cooked food sometime, like tempura, tonkatsu, udon, soba, yakitori, yakisoba, fried fish, gyoza, oden, shabu-shabu, and sukiyaki,

This was our first time dining at this restaurant and it will be our last!! We get sat down and they didnt take our drink order. We kept getting passed up by every waitress. We tried to stop them and they just kept ignoring us. They sat other and grab their drink order. It was not busy at all. Only about 1/4 of the restaurant was occupied. We sat there for 20min before getting asked what we wanted to drink. We finally got our drinks and wanted to order and the waitress walked off. We had questions about the menu but couldnt get anyone to help us. In the meantime, two different couples walked in and just so happened they were asian. They were sat and took their drink orders and went over the menu with them. The conversed with them. We felt so disrespected. We ended up just asking for our check to pay for our one soda we ordered. I cant even believe they charged me for it. I hadnt even took a drink from it. $2.86 for a soda...really?!?! This place is trash.

I had made a reservation one month in advance for one of the side rooms to celebrate my daughters birthday. Upon arriving the hostess literally bickered with me about not being able to honor the reservation because there was only three of us attending. Not only did they not inform me that they can not seat less than four on the weekends for their side rooms, the hostess continued to fight with me in the midst of a crowded room and insisted we sit at a table. I would not back down and eventually after making my family and I feel completely humiliated, she stated "just this once Ill allow this but never again". This behavior and treatment tarnished our overall experience to the point that the food and atmosphere was ruined. This is the poorest most disgusting customer service I have ever received and will never return.

Three o-clock on a Sunday. We are the only customers in the restaurant. I count 6 employees standing around. It took the waitress over 10 minutes to bring us our drink order. Five minutes after we ordered, the $50 mistake arrived. The sushi tasted like they mixed tabasco sauce, Friskies Crab of the Sea, miracle whip and laziness rolled in an un toasted seaweed wrap. It was horrible! My wifes salmon and steak entree was over-cooked farmed salmon with a small beaten to hell round steak and previously frozen vegetables slathered in a Lean Cuisine/top ramen brown sauce. We eat out all the time. Its the first time in over 3 years I havent tipped. Ill Never go back. They get one star for cleanliness

Wow! This place was fantastic. It really surprised me that a little strip mall thing could hold an amazing sushi restaurant. The staff was great and the food was fantastic! They played some dated "new age" music in the restaurant; but you dont seem to notice once you get your food and start stuffing your face with delicious raw fish. Would I go here again? I think Ill go here every time! Every time I come to boise Im going to this place until the doctor says I cant eat fish anymore because of mercury poisoning. Thats how good it was. Step above conveyor belt, but not exactly on par with a Japanese steak house. We ordered a rainbow platter, tofu, and chicken katsu. All the rolls and tofu tasted fresh, and the chicken katsu was perfectly crispy. All-in-all the food was a-ok. The service was good too. Didnt bother us too much, but noticed when we needed waters and got in and out with no fuss. I wouldnt mind stopping back in for lunch if I was in the mood for a quick bite of sushi. Added note: apparently if you come in with a large enough party, you will be treated to a private room.

I have eaten at many sushi places in Boise but this is my only returning place, with a comfortable setting, GREAT presentation and taste! the sashimi comes in a good quantity and the Miso soup is the freshest I ever had! My husband and I have been keeping a list of all the rolls on the menu and we are almost done it is really fun to try everything! OUR Customer service has always been very nice but its the great quality that keeps us loyal and bringing friends along to see what we keep talking about! Thank you from the Manhattan Roll Couple:-)

We thought it was a Japanese Restaurant, but I didnt think it was authentic Japanese. The food was horrible, the chicken almost inedible, and terriyaki chicken was a thick chunky, tough & tasteless thing, and cooked with peppers, some squash, tomatoes and onions. The chicken was so tough that I can hardly swallow it. It seemed like the dish was a mix of Japanese and something else. The salad was not Japanese dressing. I would not recommend this restaurant for anyone.

This is probably one of the best places to eat as a pay per roll Japanese dining experience. Their rolls are so wonderful, artistically done and the flavor is exquisite. Anyone wanting to achieve a sushi master perfection of his craft I recommend that you dine here. I still look to find anything better. I don’t visit that often than what I would like to, but location being the first reason and the price is more than most, but they are worth every amount.

Extremely over priced, bad service, and really really awful sushi. We waited to be served our drinks for 20 minutes despite the fact that the place was mostly empty, when we finally got to place our order it took a long time to come. The portion sizes leave you hungry after youve paid an arm and a leg. My advice, just go somewhere else.
