We had heard nothing but wonderful things about this restaurant and had always wanted to try it. Last night we did, and if I could erase a food experience of the last year (luckily, our company was terrific which saved the night!) it would be last night at Pastis. After claiming that wed not made a reservation, or that perhaps theyd lost it, we were seated at a nice table for 4 that had been only partially set. 2 menus, 3 forks, that kind of thing. A request for additional menus was met by a pleasant smile and nod by our obviously non-English speaking water-pouring busboy and menus never arrived. Finally ordering two cold salad appetizers for the table and entrees, we waited 45 minutes just for the salads. The asparagus salad was okay, except that it was really just a pile of arugula with 3 or 4 vegetable peeler thin shavings of asparagus. The hard boiled egg was overcooked to the point of taking on that unpleasant green tinge. Seriously, thats like eggs 101. The Fannie Farmer cookbook can teach you how not to do that. But it got worse. 30 minutes after clearing our appetizers, our bottle of wine long empty without any inquiry as to whether wed want more, our entrees arrived. My wifes filet, ordered medium, was bloody cold and rare (personally, I thought it was pretty good, but I like super-rare meat) and my friends, ordered rare, was medium if not medium well. My sea bass, strongly pushed by the waiter, was the travesty though. Broken into 7 or 8 mushy, undercooked pieces--many literally "smeared" on the plate, on top of tough, out of season yellow squash that also was undercooked. The pieces of squash were so big, that the seeds were more like pumpkin seeds than the small ones found in (edible) summer squash. I love squash, but this is why so many people HATE squash (including my wife). Our waiter failed to check on us for 10 minutes, and when I told him of the problem with the fish, he said hed take care of it, but we watched him spend another 5-10 minutes taking the orders of a large party nearby. When he finally came back, he said that they were out of sea bass but could offer me tilapia. Tilapia, for $29?! I wasnt taking crazy pills, and refused. Tuna, he offered? Okay, I said. The tuna was okay, but clearly of low quality, full of tough gristly bits running all through it. Regardless, by the time I got said tuna, my companions had long since finished their meals. The waiter finally realized--perhaps noticing that the restaurant was by this time mostly empty--that wed been there for hours struggling to get through our meal. He comped our second bottle of wine (really only ordered so wed have something to DO while waiting) and desserts. Granted, the desserts were free, but the apple tarte tatin was so tough and chewy I couldnt bear it, and covered in some icy, watery sorbet that quickly melted into the pastry making it cold and wet I actually found it really funny. I love sorbet, but who puts it on apple pie, let alone a supposedly delicate tarte tatin? With Atlanta now becoming a true restaurant city, with dozens of excellent options to choose from---how I wished I was at Floataway Cafe, Rathbuns, JCT Kitchen, Ecco, or innumerable others - we will not be darkening Pastis door again anytime soon.

Tried Pastis Restaurant & Bar last night (Saturday) in downtown Roswell, GA. It was around 7:00pm, so the place wasnt close to crowded and was maybe 20% full. After my date and I were seated and each got a glass of wine, we sat there for 25 minutes with no one coming back to our table to take our dinner order. All the while, the table next to us was seated with a party of six who was able to get their drinks, place their orders, and receive their appetizers. Only after, I walked up to the hostess stand to tell her that wed been sitting there for so long without getting to place an order, did our waiter finally show back up. I asked him for our check and told him that we were going somewhere else. While waiting for him to come back, I asked a waitress to send over the manager. But instead of the manager, the head waiter comes to our table. So I ask him to send over the manager, and we sit and wait. Never did see the manager. And, Ive never been one to walk on a check (albeit only two glasses of wine) until visiting Pastis, but then again the waiter never brought it to our table after I asked for it. I have never experienced such horrible service in any restaurant until I made the mistake of visiting Pastis. This was absolutely the worst service that Ive ever experienced. If you are looking for a nice restaurant in Roswell, Pastis isnt it - avoid this place like the plague. If you are looking for a shining example of poor customer service, want to be ignored and dont mind snacking on stale French bread, then give Pastis a try.

After my friend and I were seated I noticed a strange smell, and right next to the table in the window was a dirty, foul smelling bar rag. I was hoping that they did not use that to wipe my table! I ordered an "in house made" crab cake on croissants with feta cheese and chipotle sauce with pasta salad on the side $12.95. The crab cake was about 4" X 3" cut into 2 pieces. There was some lettuce and half a slice of tomato on the plate. The feta was either very old, or it was bleu or gorgonzola. Chipotle sauce was good. Pasta salad was lukewarm and tasteless. Iced tea was watered down and not served with lemon. I was excited about going to this place, but will not be back. I needed a big mint after this meal!

Visited Pastis on a Tuesday evening using a Travelzoo deal. Located in a nice area in Roswell. The decor and mood was very relaxing. Everything about the experience was better than expected. Our server was absolutely fantastic. We were seated in an open air room in the front of the restaurant. The only negatives were that it got a little chilly and the cigarette smoke from people including one of the employees standing outside was offensive. They should not seat non-smokers in this area. Without the Travelzoo voucher it would have been quite expensive. Since it is located an hour away it is doubtful I will return without another Groupon or Travelzoo deal.
