I am giving this restaurant a 1 star and only because I had to in order to write my review. My daughter went to this establishment on Mother’s Day approximately 1:00 pm. She advised me that on arrival, she asked for table for 3 and a high chair. She was told that there were no seats available, even though she can see many empty tables. When she responded regarding the empty tables, she was asked if she had a reservation. She advised that she had been there in the past and was never required to have a reservation and the reply was “there are no seats available.” A waitress came over and looked like she was ready to seat them upon which the host told the waitress “I already told her that there are no seats available.” At this time my daughter thanked her and left. I was very upset that this sort of behavior still occurs these days and needed to post this so that no one else will need to go thru this sort of embarrassment. Not sure if it was the baby or the fact that she was Latina. She ended up at Olive Garden where, she advised, the ambience was wonderful & they were able to eat and enjoy a Mother’s Day late lunch.

A couple friends and I found this place and we went in, thinking it would be a good place to share a pizza and leave relatively quickly. We went in and it took about 10 minutes for someone to get us water and take our order (the waitress didnt introduce herself, just said "What can I get you?"). We then proceeded to wait an additional 55 MINUTES to get ONE pizza. When we finally received our pizza, the waitress just plopped it down and rushed away without saying anything. It wasnt like the place was busy, only about half full with plenty of servers. The pizza was also burnt, so we waited almost an hour to receive burnt food. While we were there we also saw employees spraying and wiping the tables with Windex, not sanitizer (One of my friends there works in a Public Health department and said that what they were doing wasnt sanitary). So what I learned was: (1) Terrible service, (2) Mediocre food (would have been better if it wasnt burnt), and (3) Unsanitary. Awesome.

We stop by New Haven when driving through from northern New England to PA...and have been to all of the pie places: Modern, Pepe, Sally and Abate. To this pizza addicts taste, Modern is the besta pizza. But, after two visits in the last few years, we think Abates comes next on the pizza itself. High praise, indeed. And, no wait; no hassle, and good hours (when youre passing through, you want a place to be open and Modern opens late Sundays and is closed Mondays; Sallys opens at 5 every day it seems....and Pepes line isnt worth the effort...and, other than their clam pie, even no line isnt worth the effort, in my opinion. So....go to a Bates...confidently.

Absolute worst experience of my life.the service was horrible. The waitress/manager charged 3 different amounts on my debit card and later claimed that she voided them after I checked my bank account. She never informed me that she made these errors and was extremely rude when I confronted her. I asked to speak with the owner and was told that she was at their Branford location and was too busy to get on the phone with me. It was horrible experience that ended up with me calling the cops. Please do yourself a favor and stay as far away from this place as possible.

I walked into the take out area and observed the cook that preps the dough, eating and literally sucking his fingers. He then proceeded to handle his cellphone sending text messages. Unfortunately, I watched him go right back to preparing pizza. I was disgusted. I did report this to the manager Christine, who only pretended she was going to check on him. After she thought that I was gone, she came back out to the dining like nothing ever happened. Oh well. So sad. That's my last visit. I'd rather go where the cooks are visible and held accountable.

The biggest and tastiest large calzone you will ever see or have. A steal at 15 buck because it could feed 3 people. Unlike the other pizza joints Abates offers a full menus which I prefer because Im a soup man and the white bean escarole soup was fantastic and flavorful. If your looking for something a little different for the New Haven staples try this place out. Very yunmy and a kind and timely wait staff.

Food is GREAT!!! Service is HORRIBLE!!!!!!! They are very wishy washy as to where they deliver. I live ONE mile away from Abates. I used to dine in but the service was so horrible I decided to have it delivered. They claim to not deliver to where I live on some days. Then on others they have NO problem with delivering!!

Rude staff, food isnt that great. I will never give Abates my business again. Do yourself a favor. On the same street you can choose from two restaurants that are known all over the country. Go to Sallys or Pepes which are both on Wooster Street. Nothing anywhere compares to either of them.

Went there a couple of days ago. Had their fried seafood combo; very bland, breading was falling off the scallops. Ordered a Caesar salad, they gave me romaine lettuce with mayo and grated Parmesan cheese. Will never eat there again.

The best. Fresh mozz...and the next day the cheese is softer! I love Abate. Good sauce, perfect crust, and the sausage is fresh. I love this place and the people are always nice; they actually remember your name. I love it!.

Not crowded, crispy thin crust pizza is good. I like it. The other dishes are not bad either. Give it a try, it beats waiting an hour outside Pepes or Sallys, like a schmuck.

Service was okay (the waitress had to serve the whole restaurant at lunch time so it certainly wasnt her fault) and pizza was so-so. Ive had better from them in the past.

Best take out place. Try the Cheryls special, Pepperoni, fresh garlic and get it well done. And yes people, New Haven Apizza is charred. Fresh, fast hot and delicious!
