The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. I went during off hours, between lunch and dinner, so was seated right away. To start, the chips and salsa are not complimentary, and would have been disappointing even if they were. The salsa was chunky and while bits of onion and cilantro were visible, the only flavor I got was of the tomato. They do have a homemade hot sauce in bottles if you ask for it. It added a bit of spice to the salsa, but it still was not great. The shredded beef chimichanga was cheesy, but not very flavorful. The black beans were extremely bland. The rice had green peas instead of the typical kernels of corn. The ground beef soft tacos were served on double mini tortillas and overstuffed, so you could easily separate them and get two tacos out of each. These too lacked any significant flavor. Even the 7Up and orange soda tried seemed to be lacking the normal amount of syrup. The tres leches cake had a very coarse texture, almost like cornbread. The cake was the real reason for the trip, because someone recommended it as the best in Hartford. So, 4 stars for service and 2 stars for food. Maybe this was an atypical experience, but sadly nothing tried warrants a return visit for me.

If you want authentic Mexican food, Ive yet to find a better place locally than Iguanas Ranas. The food is prepared in a traditional style, the tortillas are fresh, and the drinks are excellent. Add that to the fact that youd be hard-pressed to find more reasonable prices, and you have an excellent night out. Oh, and the staff is very friendly and accomodating. Two recommendations--Chile Verde Burrito and the taco platter (The Al Pastor is something Ive never tasted outside of Mexico and the Southwestern US. Rare for New England, for certain.) Ive included pictures of both.

This is one of those hole in the wall storefront ethnic restaurants that serves much better food than the bigger places and at a much lower price. There are only a few tables, and its not fancy, but the food is fantastic. If you live nearby, it is also a great option for take-out, and then you dont have to worry about getting a table. Ive heard a number of people say they eat there at least once a week, so it has a loyal clientele, and deserves it.

Only been once, took about 10 mins to get an employee even though the place was literally empty. Then for the pricing I expected much more from the food. I had some fish tacos that left me disappointed, the rice and beans were bland, and the only redeeming part of my meal was the chips and salsa and who knows if they even made the chips or if they just bought those prepackaged. I doubt Ill ever be back.

Comida casera authentic Mexican food prepared and served by the Martinez family and their staff! Authentic Mexican food doesnt get any better than what is served here. A full bar provides both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages including refrescos and sodas from Mexico. Many fine beers, tequilas and wines and licores and liquors served from the full bar. Fine food and beverages at reasonable prices.

If you like spending $3 for your chips , cool and another $3 for your refill and dont forget the $3 for the salsa. And when they say they dont have fajitas but they can accommodate, their idea of accommodation is chopped pepper steak with mostly peppers and onions. And it barely has the flavor of the peppers. So very bland, and all for a low price of $13 but dont expect much meat.

The place isnt much to look at, but the food was INCREDIBLE! I had an amazing burrito with shrimp and tilapia in a lime tequila sauce. It was so large that I couldnt pick it up, but it was delicious! Service was very friendly, too. Nothing fancy; you order at the counter and pick a seat. Your food is brought to you, but you clean up after yourself. Loved it!

This place is awesome- I eat here at least once a week. The family that owes it is kind and very nice to us every time we come in. And dont get me started on the food!! I have not found ANY Mexican food since moving to Connecticut that I like as well. Blows overpriced La Boca and under-flavored Puerto Vallarta out of the water!! Middletowns best!

I have never been to a Mexican Restaurant that charges for chips and salsa. I can order a house margarita and a order of chips and salsa at LaBoca for $7.00 dollars. They charged me $11.00 at Iguana Ranas... the food is good, and the service is adequate, but the charge for chips and salsa just threw me... !((

One of the worst meals Ive ever had, Mexican or anywhere. This is not Mexican food. The guacamole is from some plastic container and the salsa was from a can. Zero flavor. Fish tacos were balls of deep fried dough with a bit of unidentified fish in between. Just awful.

I got the burrito for lunch. I had high expectations, but it really fell flat on the flavor profile. Perhaps I missed the full experience by not having it in the restaurant. I am willing to give it another chance, because it definitely has promise.

Iguanas Ranas is delicious AUTHENTIC Mexican food. They have Mexican sodas and desserts. The atmosphere is nothing fancy, but it doesnt matter the food is incredible. If youve ever been to Mexico, or if you want to go, you MUST to come here!

Never crowded which is surprising given the fact that this is some of the best Mexican food in the state! Ask if they have the cocadas cookies for desert. Theyre not on the menu but theyre handmade by the matriarch of the family.

All the food was just average. The salsa was too spicy and I dont think they should charge for salsa and chips either. Some of the guacamole still had bits of avocado skin in it but the waiter brought us another dish.

The atmosphere is kind of like a cafeteria, but that is part of the charm. The food is absolutely amazing, though pricey. But you can get a burrito that is so big, it could easily feed 2 or even 3!

Ive only had their tacos, but they are the best tacos Ive ever had. I love Mexican food and this is my all time favorite place! Also, the aquas frescas are the best accompaniment to their food!

I want to like it because the at the first location food seemed so awesome. I gave one more chance and its still meh at best. The meat is over cooked and yes they charge for chips and salsa.

Guacamole and salsa tasted like it came out of a container. Everything was bland. No hot sauce or salt & pepper in sight. Mixed drinks where terrible. Sad. Except my Bfs mojito.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant Ive found. The food is fantastic, especially the burritos (which are big enough to save some for lunch the next day). Pricing is very reasonable.
