We have a mixed review, which probably has more to do with which cooks are on duty the day we order take-out. When theyre good, theyre very, very good, and when theyre bad, theyre horrid, like the little girl with the little curl in the middle of her forehead. On some occasions, the food is well-prepared, tasty, and fresh; on other occasions, weve gotten a meal so poorly made that were it not for the occasions weve been pleased, wed never go back. We often order their Wor Shu Opp, listed on their menu as "Crispy Duck Boneless." There are times this is a luscious, juicy, boneless duck, sliced and served over a vegetable mix cooked in a brown sauce. When we ordered it on Sunday night, we got an overfried, almost burnt, piece of breaded duck, horribly greasy and disgusting, chopped into big pieces and dumped on a few wilted lettuce leaves. One would never guess it was from the same restaurant! The same variability applies to most of their dishes: on a good night, with the right chef on duty, theyre a a delicious, economical take-out restaurant, convenient to a residential neighborhood and open till 10:30 at night. With the wrong chef on duty, its a waste of good money. We have not yet learned to recognize the time or dates of "good staff" versus "bad staff" or to recognize them on sight, and since we generally call in an order and pick it up, we have no way to comment on delivery services. However, like most small restaurants of its kind, it appears to be run and staffed mostly by diligent, hard-working, family members, and if you hit them at a time when one of their GOOD chefs is on duty, youll get a very good Chinese-food meal there. One other thing we should add is that once, on a "bad" night, they billed us, but failed to include, one of the dishes we ordered; however, when we reported this to them the following day, they apologized and corrected the problem immediately and courteously--and so, I believe that if, on a "bad night" I had taken the trouble to bring back the poorly-prepared dishes, it is quite possible that theyd have made some adjustment. Its difficult, though, to return to a restaurant and have to tell them that a meal is not up to their usual standards; if *I* were a restaurant-owner, Id want to hear about such a problem, but not all owners appreciate it.

I had to walk out after seeing a whole host of health violations taking place in front of me. The cook was outside at the back door which can be seen clearly from the front counter. The back door was wide open without a screen, letting flies and other bugs to walk right in. While standing there smoking a cigarette, he decided he would start blowing snot out of his nose on to the ground. Not satisfied that he had expelled it all he started to dig for more! Even though that was disgusting enough, he walked back in wiped his hand on his smock and started to cook. He walked right past the sink and never bothered to wash his hands. They really couldnt understand why I canceled my order.

My experience with the Shrimp Egg Foo Yong was the worse that I have ever had. I had a taste for this dish and I wanted to give this restaurant a chance it was my first time ordering from China Garden and it is my last. However, the portion was a great but the quality and taste of the Shrimp Egg Foo Yong was not palatable. There was too much oil and the egg, was somewhat smooshy and fluffy with little to no scallions , shrimp or onions. Again, I will not order from there in the near or far future.

After having eaten regularly at San Francisco chinese restaurants like Chef Jias and House of Nanking, most east coast establishments dont compare. This one doesnt either; however, for cheap, greasy east coast chinese food--its pretty good. Honestly, its WAY better than the chinese restaurant on Whitney (by subway in Hamden,) which is absolutely wretched... Barely eatable.

We recently had a take out order including scallops with garlic sauce. 6 scallops in a container with a ton of bamboo shoots for $13.00 Not to mention the dried out white rice which required a ton of butter during reheating. This is a big disappointment from the old days of Home Village.

Ordered boneless spare ribs and the pieces were all fatty. We threw out half the container. The steamed dumplings had barely anything in them - mostly dough. Everything else we ordered was average at best. Will not be returning.

Standard Chinese food take out. Limited seating inside. Wait times vary, but they are generally fast. General Tsos combo and steamed dumplings (you get 8) cost roughly $13.

Horrible experience. Waited over one hr to get served. Waitress ignored us several times when we asked for water and sugar. Will not be coming back to this place. Avoid!
