Bland cake, accusations, nothing offered to correct situation but an offer to refer to ANOTHER bakery who has american buttercream frosting (an assumption that that was what I wanted "gritty super sweet frosting make with vegetable shorting"). The frosting had no flavor. It was not sweet, not did it have FLAVOR. It did not even taste like butter. The most similar flavor was like other reviews I read.... Crisco or Vegetable shorting. Please see my original email (I previously sent a message on the website but received no response). I posted the response I received. From there my sister had interactions with this bakery. No solutions were offered. I asked them to contact my sister (I did provide her number in the original email). I was hoping they would offer a pie or cookies in an effort to correct the situation and keep customers. Apparently $60 on a cake disliked by four people and "you got what you paid for attitude" is good enough for them! : My email: Dated June 9 2016: I am disappointed I received no response to my prior message (submitted) on the website about the horrible salted caramel cake that was purchased on June 8th, 2016 by my sister, Bobbi XXXXXX, for my birthday. As I said previously, the thick swiss buttercream frosting was bland. It had no taste. The only taste it was similar to was vegetable shortening. The cake and small amount of caramel inside did not make up for that horrible frosting on the outside. And, at this point there has been no attempt to right the situation. 3 other people had this cake with me and enjoyed by none. I feel horrible my sister paid for such an expensive cake and it be so bad. I sincerely hope you reach out to my sister to correct the situation. -Jessica ------------------------------------- The response I received: (accusations, suggesting I wanted super sweet frosting, and she did not contact my sister who paid $60 for a cake no one liked) Hello, This is the first email I have received regarding this matter, the cake was actually frosted and made the way we have always made them. This cake in particular was actually baked and frosted by our bakery manager herself. After we frosted cake there are usually scraps left over from trimming the cake, we were eating those scraps all afternoon and they were fine. The only time that the frosting would be tasteless and have a greasy taste and feel, is if the cake was eaten cold. We informed the person that picked up the cake that it must be eaten at room temperature. This is very important its a very strict rule that we have in the bakery, we tell everybody who picks up anything from us but it must be eaten at room temperature. If the frosting is cold it will be tasteless and it will taste like pure butter and it will feel greasy. We do not use any shortening in our frosting. Swiss meringue buttercream is not super sweet but we make it the same and it is the same buttercream we have used for eight years, this buttercream is enjoyed by almost everyone who comes into our bakery. We do not have any other complaints about the frosting being tasteless or greasy. Most people just expect that supersweet gritty frosting which is made with shortening. Our shop manager actually added more caramel to the center of the cake, she made sure that there was enough. It is impossible for us however to stop the caramel from being absorbed into the cake. It sounds like the problem is a matter of personal preference, and not due to the cake or frosting itself. We have people who come in and order just cups of the frosting and eat it with a spoon. Im sorry we could not win you over with our awesome frosting and cake. We understand that its not for everyone, there are other bakeries that do you make the super sweet American buttercream with shortening and powdered sugar. That may be something that you prefer and we would be happy to refer you to bakeries that use that type of frosting. As far as your order I can assure you that you received exactly what you ordered. Thank you so much! Diana

Mermaids bakery made the most beautiful and delicious wedding cakes for me last year. As I got ready to order a small version of our cake, I realized why have I not shared this info. We ordered several cakes for our large wedding. The wedding cake was a three tier, smooth white with personalized details of a back heel and iron man; simple and elegant. It was their delicious Churro flavor, yes Churro!! I still have guests ask me where that cake came from and how they can get more churro cake. In order to save some money (who doesnt need that when planning a wedding) Diana recommended a sheet cakes for serving. One was a moist white cake, filled with fresh raspberries, and a light white frosting and the other strawberry lemonade; several guests sampled multiple flavors! But the hit of the night (that guests were photographing) was the cookies and cream Chipotle Burrito grooms cake and Zombie hand reaching out. My husbands two obsessions! Ive done my fair share of cake eating across Colorado and Mermaids is truly the best. They took time to discuss cake ideas, provide feedback when requested, accommodate questions from multiple people and delivered both visually and tummy pleasing cakes!

i would love to give this bakery a better rating as the first time i went in years ago it was marvelous, they had options in both small and large sizes, cupcakes, cakes, and cookies, and pretty good hours for a sweets shop but the last few months something has clearly changed. I have left work early three times to get there before it closes and the display cases are always EMPTY, and i mean *empty* people, not even crumbs. I came in *before* work once to see if maybe it was me, but no, the display cases were empty - EMPTY - at 9am as well (They open at 7). I sent my roommate who absolutely loves the joint to try during the day thinking I must just have bad luck. Guess what? Empty cases. There was someone sweeping and two people baking that i could see on each visit as well but nothing to show for it. Maybe they have switched to a production bakery only but then they should lock their front door so foolish customers like me wont come in and expect to be able to buy something at a store that claims to have products. Gonna try one more time but I am not hopeful.

I had Mermaids bake an anniversary cake for my husband and I. I originally wanted to order over the phone, but the person on the other end was rather inept, and I told her that maybe it would just be better if I brought a picture in. That weekend, I did. Another person took my order, which was very detailed, included the decorations I wanted, etc. etc. The day before, I got a call from them, about an hour before they closed, saying they didnt have my order. I called them back, and within 5 minutes, they "found" it. I got another call minutes later from the woman who was going to bake my cake, asking about some things that apparently werent discussed in my order. Got my cake. It was beautifully decorated! It was also the wrong flavor and had the wrong icing. The cake did not taste...great. I mean, really, the cake FLAVOR? Icing I can totally ignore, but flavor? Isnt that the first thing you do?
