Pair quality beer with good food and warm, fun, and funky atmosphere and you have the good time that is to be had at Discretion Brewing. A recent pair of tasting flights (6 3oz pours per flight) took me through all 11 beers on tap. All were very true to their styles and not a single one disappointed. The British mild ale had way more body and caramel/nut flavor than any 4.0% beer has a right to and Id put their session IPA up there with Firestone Walkers Easy Jack. Given that it was pretty toasty last time I was there, the Shimmer pilsner was a joy to quaff. However, the Gloriouski amber ale i got a pint of still paired better with the Chicken and Waffles their excellent kitchen provided. I will definitely be back again soon and if you are a fan of good craft beer and tasty food, you should get yourself here too.

The beer is decent if not slightly below average, the food is good albeit in small portions. But this place clearly prefers Doms and Hipsters to any local flavor. Not my local brewery. Lady at the register cut us off after two beers and said we had enough..... uh... what? Super snotty and refused to tell me why, because we were not inebriated in any way. At one point the manager came up to us as we requested to be informed why we were being cut off and I was told "This isnt a bar" in a very judgmental way. So when I read the comment below that this "isnt a construction workers type of place" I know exactly what that reviewer meant. They definitely prefer workboots that arent used for work and skinny jeans along with lumber jack beards worn by people who have never swung an ax. In one word: FAKE.

Discretion Brewery is the best in town. I’m a former SC resident turned NYC resident but I chose to have my wedding in Capitola as it is awesome. We wanted to keep everything in SC as much as possible, including beer. We tried SO many beers and decided to use Discretion. We ordered a couple, Good Faith strong ale & Foggy Forest IPA and we were so happy with our choice. The food there is so good too. It’s simply a nice atmosphere. The people working there are super nice and unpretentious. There are other breweries in the area who think too highly of themselves and it was refreshing to work with down to earth people. We liked them so much that we gave them our coveted donut leftovers from Dunlaps when we returned the pony kegs.

What a great place awesome delicious food beer and atmosphere . Had the beet salad, super tasty and stylishly plated. Uncle Daves Rye IPA very good as well. Id give it a 4.9 overall but what brought it down a notch was unlike most restaurants of this caliber where you order your food and drink enjoy it and the atmosphere and then get the bill pay it and tip for good service. Here at Discretion as soon as you order you either immediatley have to provide your credit card to run a tab and or pay up front. The staff suggested that they have had problems in the past with payment ? But what restaurant hasnt ? I dunno it put me off a bit. Just a little bit though as all else was excellent.

I wanted to love it, my foodie brother-in-law is in love with this place, but not so much for me. Grits and Greens - sloppy gloppy, puree-style something-or-other, with over-cooked greens to boot (and I love grits - and greens!). Caesar Salad - which should be pretty easy to get right - was giant pieces of limpy Romaine, swimming in liquidy dressing - although the croutons were definitely yummy and homemade. Its also nice they do the tasting thing for the beer, where you are given a list of current offerings and can select which 6 you want to try. A friendly touch is the blankets in case you get chilly. Dogs on the patio? Awesome!

This local brewery produces great beer and even better food. Good breweries are plentiful in Santa Cruz, but great food is hard to find. This out of the way brewery-barn hidden behind a furniture store on 41st Avenue is an oasis. The tiny kitchen run by Santos Majano produces the best Cesar salad I have found outside of San Francisco. The beer friendly fare is organic, locally sourced and inspiring. The atmosphere is warm and comfortable. This brewery might just be the best restaurant in Santa Cruz.

Come for the beer, stay for the food. Discretion has a small selection of home brewed beers on tap that change regularly. The atmosphere is open and casual. Most breweries have food out of necessity - but at Discretion, the kitchen is a separate entity serving a variety of fresh, house-made meals, snacks, and desserts. The menu changes regularly as well. Highly recommend!

The beer here is great and tasty. The food is pretty fancy and expensive. My only complaint is they left the shells on the shrimp in a taco. Great taste but the texture was gross.

I will always come back for the Uncle Daves RyePA. So good. They allow dogs in their outdoor seating area. Here and beer 30 are my two favorite beer spots in Santa Cruz.

The food was a nice surprise and the beer was about average to above average. For the beer geeks out there, just down the road is Sante Adairius Rustic Ales (SARA).

Definitely try the "11th "Conversation." Would be a 5 star if they had some normal food. Giving a flight of 6 for $9 is awesome.

Cool selection of beers, strong barrel age ale is great, no stouts or porters. They do have very great tasting food though.
