Once upon a time there was a ice cream shop called Swensens. Swensens had the best flavor of chocolate ice cream you could ever want. After all of the Swensens in Southern California had closed, (there is still the original in San Fran) a decade ago, my family has been looking for something close. We had 2 people tell us that Hans has Sticky Chewy Chocolate ice cream exactly like Swensens did. We called to confirm and the girl that answered said "we call it Chewy Chocolate, but its the exact same thing" imagine our heartbreak and disappointment when we get there, order what we thought was going to be exactly what weve been looking for and realize it isnt even close. The flavor was a mild chocolate and the texture was icy, like it had sized up in the churner. I cant speak to the other flavors of ice cream, because thats the only flavor we tried. We also had sandwiches for lunch and they were most definitely not something to write home about, and Im pretty sure the sides; potato salad/macaroni salad/coleslaw were pre made from Costco or the like.

Food - I think the only thing lacking from Hans is their food. Of course people dont come here for anything other than ice cream but its there. The food here is on the same caliber as what a mom would make in the 50s. Deli sandwiches, hot dogs, and things out of a can. Skip the food and go to the other local restaurants. Ice Cream - I remember coming here a lot in my younger age. And Ive seen a slew of flavors come and go. Their current bread and butter... cookie butter ice cream. That is where your money should go if you want a scoop of something. All other flavors are well put together and taste great exactly how they should. Other offerings are sundaes, premade drum sticks, frozen bananas... I wonder if theyll bring back black licorice ice cream. Service - Service with a smile... always. Feels like a soda fountain shop from the 50s. People here are nice and definitely make you feel like a local. Price - Reasonable. Not as cheap as a scoop from thrifties or baskin robbins... but trust me. Leagues better. $

We shared a single scoop of the chocolate marble. The single scoop was more of a cup full. The girl behind the counter hooked it up as she was trying to scoop the last of everything in the tub. She gave us so much that other customers were questioning our single scoop order; it was kinda funny. The chocolate marble was okay. The ice cream was so creamy and buttery in taste that it was a tad much for me. There also werent any chocolate. We almost wanted to bring it back but didnt since they were nice enough to hook it up. Im in no hurry to be back.

Easily one of my favorite spots for ice cream in the city. Theres always a line going around the block, but trust me, its worth the 10-20 minute wait. If youre going for the first time, you must try the salted caramel. Its incredible. I also love the brownie a la mode they have, although thats best shared between two people unless youre very hungry. Also make sure to ask them what the special flavors for the day are - theyre usually pretty interesting too!

Although staff seems a little overwhelmed even at 8pm at night since the line was out the door, the ice cream is divine. Perfect cream to flavor ratio. Not overly sweet or icy just bursting with flavor and creamy consistency. We ordered a double hot fudge brownie sundae, caramel pecan fudge sundae and a waffle cone with a double scoop of Boudreaux Cherry and Peanut butter chocolate. All orders were beyond expectations.

Hidden upstairs next to the restroom resides Hans Ice cream! Nothing like good ol ice cream to sober you up from a whole day of beer! There very good about letting you try as much favors as you would like without the awkward stare, i mean i personally think its necessary to figure out a favor with no pressure - it is $5.50 for a cone! With 2 scoops its decent price..better than the overly hyped Popbar next door!

Small, friendly ice cream parlor with a limited but great lunch menu. Their split pea soup is really good. But its the ice cream, my friends, its the ice cream. Homemade and delicious. Numerous interesting flavors, but you have to try their Chocolate Orange Chip. If you remember and loved Swensons "Swiss Orange Chip," you will love Hans Chocolate Orange Chip. Enjoy, but please leave some for me.

Great made in the store old-fashioned icecream with all the fixings. Special hard to find flavors with real ingredients, no fake flavors. Try the German Chocolate, Butter Brickle, Lemon, or if you really want to try a different flavor, the Licorice. Service is great, and the guy that makes the icecream now is really making some good changes in the store. Nice job Franz.

I have not actually tasted their food, but i saw something that made me never want to try it: I was sitting in the in front of the window where they actually make the ice cream, and I saw someone pick their nose while making the ice cream. It was disgusting. I dont know if it was just that one person and only one time, but if he did it once, he probably did it other times.

Love the sandwiches and ice cream (home made!) here. Service is incredibly friendly. Great place near south coast plaza, definitely worth a stop if youre hungry or if you just need some ice cream! Personally I love their BLT sandwich on sour dough and vanilla ice cream.

They have the best ice cream! My favorite is the blackberry, but all the flavors are amazing (cookie butter, dark chocolate orange, butterbeer...). Cute shop. My sister had their split pea soup as well during our last visit, which she quite enjoyed as well.

Delicious ice cream! Their portions are absolutely huge. Theres also rotating flavors to keep it interesting. Cookie butter and peanut butter chocolate was good. They allow you to split a scoop into 2 flavors so you dont need to buy two scoops.

Delicious ice cream! I had a scoop of frozen hot chocolate which was amazing and a scoop of coffee oreo, which was delicious as well. The shop is not very big and can get crowded, but the ice cream is so good.
