Another day, another new restaurant. This time it was a popular Malaysian place in San Jose, Layang Layang. It felt like I completely missed on the place since most of my colleagues seemed to have been there more than once. We had a big party and needed reservations to get us all accomodated on time. The place is unobtrusive on the outside and funky on the inside. Nothing fancy but just Malay stuff around the place to enhance the feel of eating Malay food. For those not familiar with Malaysian cuisine, it feels like the best mix of Indian and Thai flavors with a dash of Chinese to it. And it definitely tastes great. It is spicy, uses a lot of Indian flavors and fills up a hungry stomach very well. And yes, it is extremely greasy which adds to the allure of being a rare treat worth cherishing. I ordered the Roti Kanai appetizer which came in steaming hot. The roti is really the south Indian parotta sold in Indian stores in the frozen food section. The peanut sauce was well spiced and great to go with the roti. There were a bunch of vegetarian choices as an entree. The entree I had chosen was my typical Malay choice- pineapple friend rice without egg and mushroom. I didnt want to pick a specific spice level opting to go with the house chosen level. It turned out to be a wise choice. The dish was well balanced and arrived as anticipated on a pineapple shell. It tasted great with all the raisins, pineapple pieces and cashews tossed in. I loved every morsel of it. Dessert appeared tempting but I was full and chose to leave it for another day and another review. This trip also reminded me that I need to make one to Banana Leaf, the most popular Malaysian place in town. I have almost forgotten their flavors. One thing not forgotten about Banana Leaf- the wait!

Didnt live up to expectation. This place is always busy during dinner and you probably have to wait for 30 min before you can sit down. Ive tried a noodle soup and the pineapple fried rice so far, both were just average. The pineapple fried rice had almost no taste. The portion is very small considered the price. I did takeout on the second time and the waitresses apparently got lost when the room is filled with people. As soon as I came in I told one of the waitresses I have a to-go ready sitting on the side. She checked if I was the right person and I confirmed. And then she just went away as if I hadnt talked to her at all (WTF!???). I ended up waiting for another 5 minutes for the other waitress to free up..

The Roti Canai is excellent. The Hokkien Mee is very good (often hard to go wrong). And the Sarang Seafood (and Sarang Kung Pao Chicken) is very good. The beef rendang although very tasty, the choice of meat is not the best cut. Ive had it twice (giving it a second chance, because I thought maybe I just had bad luck the first time), and its the same. Sauce for the beef rendang very good... choice of meat, very poor. But overall, the food is very good. Roti Telur is very very tasty too. Kari Chicken was ok. Malaysian Fish Ball is good (unless youre texture sensitive... it is kind of gummy)

This is a great place for malaysian food with reasonable prices. My favorite dishes to order are the Roti Canai, Kang Kung (with belechan or garlic), Ying Yong Noodle (sub the sauce with the egg chow fun sauce), Sizzling Princess Tofu, and Sarang Seafood or Veggie. For dessert, I always order the peanut pancake with ice cream which has a roti-like texture. Skip the pandan chicken, layang layang combo, mee goreng, and pad thai. They always seem to be out of okra here (even when it is in season). Not sure why it is still on the menu if its never in stock!

Arrived at 11:30am for an office team lunch. The poor kitchen was understaffed so food took longer to come out than expected. Dishes were shared, so I was able to try a lot of different food. Most of it very flavorful, with plenty of protein throughout. The waiter seemed a bit overwhelmed by our party of 10, w/ lunch rush crowd and 1 chef. (understandably) Empty dishes seemed to crowd the table, and the waiter had to leave to check multiple times whether a certain dish was available. Would return for the food. Service was sub-par on the day I went.

Been coming for close to a decade. Love the down home feel of this joint. It never claimed to be a palace. Take my friends and out of town guests here. Whilst many love the roti which is very good, I come here specifically for a few of my favorites: Egg Chow Fun, Rojak , and hubbys favorite Char Kway Teow. Also love their selection of Vegetarian meals. Its gotten to the point waitress roll out the orders we favor. Very personal touch indeed. The weekend kuih unfortunately has not been inspiring. Perhaps they need a new vendor?

Bottom line: Bland. Would not have guessed it from the menu, but my "Kari Lamb, Lamb in Layang-Layang curry sauce with freshly selected vegetables." was nothing special. Over-cooked vegetables, flavorless meet with a few chunks of fat. It was supposed to be a spicy dish, but there was no spice to be found (they forgot to ask my how spicy I wanted it and I forgot to tell them, so I guess they make it mild?). Costs: Lamb dish: $12, steamed rice $1.25, beer $4.50, total without tip for one person $19.25.

Excellent food and decent prices for the quality. However, the service could stand to be more friendly. I visited twice, once for dinner (5 friends) and once for lunch (with 1 friend) and both times the service seemed reluctant at best, not very warm and welcoming. Recommended: the roti canal (order some more for home) and the lamb dishes. I tasted a few other dishes and they were excellent: full of subtle flavors and aromas. If the service had been a tad more friendly (smiles, please) it would be 5 stars.

Came here on a recommendation from my friend. Really good! Although some of the food might have been altered to fit certain local tastes (such as the Kang Kong being not spicy enough), the food was still good! Had the cereal prawns, hainanese chicken, kang kong, spicy sotong (squid) and fried clay pot toufu. Also, you can ask for either coconut rice or hainanese rice (rice cooked with oil and Pandan) instead of normal white rice. I recommend this place for people who want to have their Asian food fix! (:

Went in for our anniversary. Made a reservation for wife and I. They called two days out to confirm. They surprised us with the chefs table. Was completely blown away by this gesture and so appreciative. We live around the corner in the west loop and know how hard it is to get a table but we will gladly go back. Everything we had was superlative. Menu changes with seasonal fare to fit what is fresh so expect changes often and for them to probably be amazing always. First class place.

Ordered a take-out using Yelp. Surprisingly really delicious! The staff was very friendly so I didnt mind waiting for extra 5 minutes for my food to be done. The restaurant itself was packed so the kitchen was probably busy (always a good sign when a restaurants business is good). The only thing I would note is that, I ordered a soup thats medium spicy and it turned out to be really REALLY spicy. I will definitely come back again.
