I took a date to Ella for her birthday. Im new to Sacramento and I had no idea where to go, so I used Google to find something more upscale/trendy/cool. I was excited to try this place when I saw the photos and read the menu. Aesthetically, the place is very nice. The food was alright, Ive had much better (Ill admit Im a bit of a food snob). We sat down and everything seemed okay at first. But then I noticed that the waiter was spending all of his time at other tables and blowing us off. He literally didnt come to our table after he took our food order. I had to flag down other waiters to get a drink, and then they proceeded to card me again when I asked for another drink! Not the brightest bunch apparently. I never, ever complain at eating establishments - I know its a rough job. But when Im taking a date out for her birthday, the night needs to be special. I told the hostess how I felt about the service, she got the manager, and I relayed my feelings to him. He did the best he could, he asked if I would like a free round of drinks or a free dessert, to which I said no, I wanted to leave (by the way, he should never have asked me if I wanted free drinks or dessert - he should have just taken care of that on my bill, but I digress...). And to top it all off, the waiter came back to apologize and he straight up lied to my face! He said that he was sorry and that it was a hectic night! Obviously it wasnt too hectic for him to attend to his other tables (I mean, their tables were right next to ours - did he think I couldnt see?). It really sucks for him because I never tip less than 20%, usually 25% if Im happy - I ended up still tipping 15% because I felt so bad about complaining. You pay high prices for food not because the food is that much better than lower priced places, you pay for the service. I was completely disappointed, so much so that I decided to write my first ever review. I will never go back.

I went to Ellas about a week ago to celebrate my girlfriends birthday. Before even going there I called in advance to make a reservation, and the hostess set the whole mood for everything. Jessica was amazing on the phone and incredibly polite and made me feel like a special customer. When we got there we were seated instantly and brought cocktails. The food came out in a timely manner (faster than expected) and everything was cooked to perfection. Our waiter, Ryan, was attentive without being overbearing and we never had empty glasses of anything. I ordered the breakshire pork chop and my girlfriend ordered the Thai spiced lobster, both dishes were absolutely divine. What really sets Ella apart from other restaurants is the wait staff and management. During our meal Ryan asked if we were celebrating anything and when I told him it was her birthday he wished her a happy birthday. However, when it came time to pay our bill, Ryan informed me that our first course (baked ricotta, highly recommend) was on the house as a simple gesture to wish her a happy birthday. We never asked for it or even hinted at it and still they made us feel like the most important customers there. Will definitely be visiting again in the future. For an excellent experience, dinner for two including cocktails was under $200, well worth that price tag. If you want to impress a girlfriend or boss, have a special dinner or just feel like going somewhere incredibly pleasant, Ella is a no brainer. Thank you to all the staff there!

Honestly do not see the rave about this place! I was so excited to come here for my birthday and for my boyfriends birthday two weeks ago. From word of mouth I heard this place was great. How I heard about Ellas was through their Instagram account and their so called Farm to Fork ethic. Ok, they had an elegant menu with fine dining yet I was not impressed. We ordered the bone marrow for an apprizer which was as greasy as expected but it seemed to be a little too greasy. Our main courses were duck, and the quail with egg. Did not order a dessert just wine to compliment the duck. Overall I would say 2.5 stars for the food but 1 star for the so called farm to fork produce and unfriendly service. I spent over $100 of hard earned money for about four things yet the service was in-personable and unfriendly. As a customer I felt like I had to engage with the service to get some life out of the poor server but I got no response in return. Unfortunately, we will not be returning nor recommending this restaurant. Au Revoir Ellas, as a suggestion, maybe focus on being honest with your customers about your food and get some friendly servers. By the way, we ended up checking out Dawsons steak house down the street at Hyatt after our experience at Ellas. Spent $100 on a AMAZING dinner 5 stars! We got more food worth our money! We got the steak, scallops and out of this world duck fat fries, two glasses of wine and a dessert! Check out Dawsons if you want to spend your money on good food.

Ella has quickly gained a reputation as one of Sacramentos premier dining spots, and rightly so as the food is exquisite (despite an inexplicable overreliance on members of the allium family). The service does the food justice as well, featuring an attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable waitstaff. What a shame, then, that Ella should boast such a shoddily-organized wine list. Seeing Ella included in the utterly worthless Sacramento Magazines list of the areas best wine bars prompted me to set the record straight for anyone who might happen to come across this review. Ellas wine list is a veritable Lake Erie- extensive, but without any notable depth. The few pleasant surprises were marked up to such a degree (some over 300%) as to make one hesitant about ordering them. Even more troubling, the selection of library wines is boring and obvious, aiming for name-recognition over excellence. While this may sell bottles to oblivious big-spenders unseasoned in the world of fine wines, the experienced oenophile is hereby cautioned to show up at Ella with a bottle from his own collection.

This place was PHENOMENAL! My husband and I went there with another couple for our wedding celebration (it was our wedding gift from our dear friends and they choose this amazing restaurant for us). We made reservations and were seated a few minutes early. We had the short rib, the pork chop, the salmon and the ice cream sundae and mud pie desserts. Plus we had some amazing delicious drinks! They have a great cocktail menu with some cool concoctions! My short rib with potatoes was amazing. My husband had the pork chop and it was MASSIVE! And so juicy! It was several inches thick and tasted like heaven. Our friends had the salmon which was super tasty and our other friend had the short rib like me. The dessert was an ice cream sundae that was coffee ice cream with LEMON SCENTED MARSHMALLOWS and salted popcorn. HEAVEN!!! We also had the mud pie which was equally delicious. On top of the great food and drinks, the service was ON POINT. We had the best time here and it was our first time. We will most certainly be back for a date night soon!
