First things first, this place is legit, no questions asked. Fairly small place and sometimes little waiting around lunch time. Good thing is that it closes around 3pm and opens at 5pm for dinner time - cool right? Especially for those who miss the typical lunch hours and is still roaming around after 2pm and is hungry! Kudos to the friendly staff, complimentary jasmine tea and soup of the day -Thumbs up! Secondly, everything we have tried so far has been truly lovely and not typically oily greasy chinese food so kudos again for being authentic. The first time we came here we shared shrimp basil and shredded pork with string beans and egg fried rice - delicious but we realised we didnt have the noodles which they are known for (such amateurs right?), back the 2nd time around we didnt make the same mistake again - we went for the NOODLES - we shared their handmade noodles with the spicy shrimp sauce - YUMMY goes beyond words. We also shared a vegetarian delight mix which had all the yummy veggies. Yes, only two dishes between two people. We were full but not overeaten and didnt feel heavy because the food wasnt oily or greasy. Another time we went we tried the spicy shrimp chow mein with house noodles, spicy fish in black bean sauce and their dumplings. TRY the dumplings please! Bathrooms are ok, dont expect nothing great there, enough space to get urself in and out in no time :P. Will be back again for more noodles and try other items on this wonderful menu. Tad expensive for chinese food but again the quality is really good so you get what you pay for. Chinatown in Oakland is far more authentic than Chinatown in SF, so proud to have this place so close to home :)

Not a fan, but it is a great deal - $13 for all you can eat? I think this is a temporary promotion? Not sure. Anyways, for $13 per person, you can order any dish from the menu, and as many times as you want. Just make sure that you dont over order and become wasteful. That said, I ordered a variety of dishes with my family and didnt really enjoy any of it. Most lacked flavor and the right execution, and when it did have flavor, it was salty. The only redeeming thing about this place is the hand-pulled noodle... but even that wasnt that impressive. It had a nice chewy consistency, but rather flavorless. My *favorite* dish was the Dan Dan Noodles thought I wish it was spicier and saucey. As mentioned, the noodles had a nice texture and this is why San Dong House receives 2 stars from me instead of 1. XLB - No soup and thick skin. How can they even call this a XLB? Skewers - All had the same flavor, and nothing really impressive. The shrimps were kinda mushy, so they werent fresh. But then again,, what do you expect for $13... Fried buns - Too dense, and no condensed milk? Boo. Tasteless. Dumplings - Another redeeming factor, as they were a little bit moist on the instead. But Ive had better. All the other dishes were not memorable and bad. I dont think I could come back... Though service was nice!

After some tutoring it was time to refuel my brain and I went to Oakland Chinatown to do just that! There were quite a few people there already, but we didnt wait long for a seat, about 10-15 minutes; not too shabby. My friend raved about the dumplings and noodles of Shandong. I was for dumplings on top of that ordered candied walnut shrimp (A.K.A. honey walnut shrimp) and a small bowl of rice. The dumplings (pork and vegetables) came out first and I noticed the bread of the dumpling was thicker than expected. As for the filling and the sauce which came with the dumpling was delicious. After eating a couple of dumplings I noticed the bread still had the fresh flour taste and then it became bland. =/ The candied walnut shrimp was somewhat drenched in the mayo which didnt look as appetizing, totally could have had the sauce on the side; medium size plate. =/ Total price for those two items and rice, $27. . . Hmm, it was alright in flavor and how much you get. The staff were a little unorganized and even though this experience didnt meet expectations I would still go back to try their noodles. Hopefully that can change my mind.^^

WOW, seriously, hands down the best Chinese restairant on this side of the bay, i say this side because i havnt eaten in nearly as many chinese places over in San Fran so i cannot lay claim the shan dong is better than anyones on the west side of the bay. But back to the food, if youre going in for a noodle dish make sure to pay that exta buck for their hand rolled noodles, they roll them right in front of you (there an area to the left right as you walk in where you see the workers working in the dough and then rolling the noodles. I have yet to saste anything as savory and delicious. The inconcsistances in the noodle (like no perfect rolls) make it even yummier, and you can definately taste from the it the fact that it was just freshly rolled then cooked for you. All the other dishes are amazing as well, especially their Fried Wontons as an Appetizer. Service and Decor are both fine, nothing over the top, nothing down right horrible to experience. Depending on whose at the register, you might get a Older man who is the nicer one whereas the Older lady is the one that snaps and such, so watch out for! (these are front desk people)

Ive been to a lot of Chinese restaurants in Oakland, and several very good ones in Chinatown and nearby. This place, though, is by far the best - the friendliest and fastest service, the best food (by far), the most interesting dishes ... its a little grimy, its a hole in the wall, but if you want a tremendous meal - if the quality of the food is at all important to you - this is where you should go. Pay the extra $1 for the hand-pulled noodles - they are fantastic - and the spicy sesame paste noodles are my favorite. The house dumplings are, as everyone says, terrific; whatever good seasonal greens are ready (the dry-fried green beans, or spinach, or pea shoots, or Chinese greens, or the asparagus when its in season) are all excellent; the soups are very, very good too. In fact, even something I *never* order - the egg foo yung (the house/mix version) is incredible, and its not usually a dish Id try, let along recommend, but its absolutely perfect here. Go with a few friends so you can try more things. You will not be disappointed. If youre visiting and only have time for one dinner in Chinatown, make this the place.

Disappointed. Im not sure why this place is so highly rated. Both Yelp and Google reviews are dead wrong. Too greasy, didnt taste good. I ordered stir fried vegetable, and that was okay. Shan don beef has too much flour coating and sauce and not enough beef. It tasted like stirred fried sauced dough, and my in-law couldnt even tell if its chicken or beef inside. The steamed dumpling was alright, but skin is too thick. Sweet and sour soup tasted... Not good. My wife said I make a better one from a packet you can buy at Asian supermarket. Seriously Im not even a tough customer, and I would rate Panda Express at a 3.5, because it tastes better than this place. Im not from around the area but was in Oakland for the day and went solely based on the review. What an utter disappointment. The restaurant workers look like nice folks, and I have nothing against them, but the food is just bad. Verdict "edible, but a notch below Panda.". Note that Im comparing this noodle and dumpling shop to something like Ding Tai Fong, which if anyone has been to would agree is wayyy better than Shan Dong.
