I am a coffee lover, we have a grinder, a Pavoni, and a number of other ways we brew coffee at home, so I can appreciate a cafe that takes pride in their beans, brewing methodology and offering their clients options. But today I found that the manager of this cafe to be ignorant when it comes to giving the customer what they want, especially when its a simple request. I drove from Millbrae to attend a biz tech conference and of all the cafes in Mountain View, I chose Red Rock. I decided to get the "pour over" style (the clover method) and asked if I could get steamed milk poured into it. They replied no. I asked if I could get a cup of steamed milk on the side and I would pay for it. They said no. I looked at the cashier, and the guy who would be brewing my coffee, I said all I want is a cup of coffee, and a cup of steamed milk please, and how I drink my coffee is really my business. Well, then, they called in the manager. A young guy who already appeared as resistant to me. I asked him why they couldnt accomodate my simple request. He couldnt even answer me, really. It was Twilight Zone today, people that cant manage a simple request like please just brew my coffee and give me a side of steamed milk. the most resistant staff I had ever met, and the manager, he was immature and inept to manage it, and even offer me options. His option was to ask me to leave. His ego was bruised, and he was more concerned about himself, then running a business, and earning revenue for this cafe. This cafe cant afford to get cocky, $3.00-$7.00, plus $15.00 for coffee beans is what the owner lost today. In this economy, with so much competition especially in Mountain View, they cant afford to LOSE, and all I wanted was Black Brewed Coffee of the Las Palomas and a side of steamed milk. Im the customer, and how I want to drink my coffee is my business, who are they to tell me HOW I should drink a cup of coffee? Im so turned off, Im happy to leverage my social media skills and tell the world on all local listings, Yelp, Twitter, Foursquare, Facebook Pages, and my Facebook Profile how poorly I was treated and not to come to this place. The owners of this establishment should train their staff to please the customer (if its reasonable) and ordering a side cup of steamed milk IS reasonable. The manager said I caused a scene. I did not cause a scene, I asked questions so I can "understand their logic" behind their "nos" over giving me a side cup of steamed milk. The manager asking me to leave was LOW brow, and he shouldnt be running a business if he cant win a customer over. He is a dweeb.

I am not picky about most things but I am about Coffee. The coffee here sucks. At least in the evening time (when I came) there was only the Decaf and the Medium roast (which sucked). Maybe in the daytime they have other coffees. Weak and tastes awful. I guess if you drown it in cream and sugar it doesnt matter but if you drink it black as I do then taste is everything. The girl at the counter tells me it is "Flavorful" coffee, it is not. It tastes bad. Why not have Dark French Roast or at least some dark roast coffee instead of this poor excuse for coffee. And $2 for a small cup....seriously ?? And for those reviewers who think this place has "Good" coffee, again if youre talking about the coffee they serve in the evening (Medium roast) then sorry to say it but you dont know what good coffee is.....and honestly most people dont know what good coffee is anyway. I came from the culture that invented Coffee and this is NOT good coffee. It is colored hot water for $2.

I always get the cappuccino or the espresso macchiato, no Starbucks- or Philz-style abominations, and its always good. In this case traditional = consistently delicious. So tired of yelping whiners: my tea was not good, my Frappuccino Caramel Flan Mocha was meh. You need a Starbucks, pronto! I tried several of their coffees and they have phenomenal beans. Thats all that matters. And its coffee, not tea! I know the label below their name says "Coffee & Tea" but its an unwritten law here: theres no business that makes them both superior at the same time. If you want above average tea, its gonna say "Tea Rooms" or "Tea" first. Sheesh! Yes, the space inside has a weird flow and I always feel a bit awkward not knowing where to stand waiting for my drink so I dont become an obstacle for others trying to pass. But Ill take 1000+ moments of awkwardness before I set foot in a Starbucks or Philz.

I write this review as someone that has seen Mountain View from its humble beginnings, before LinkedIn and even before Google. Red rock represents both the Mountain View that I grew up in and the city that it has become - it supports both community and the entrepreneurial spirit that is the heart of the Silicon Valley. What to Get Here: A Job New Ideas Cappuccino (2.90) Latte (3.50) Red Rock has seating both upstairs and downstairs. The space upstairs creates a haven for those who treat cafes as their home offices. Interestingly enough, because of the ample amount of tables, power outlets, and fast internet, it has become the ad hoc conference room for many startups and a place to conduct interviews. Being in this space is as inspiring as it is productive (and serves good cappuccinos and lattes to boot!).

Im rating this solely from a non-coffee drinkers perspective. So if youre trying to find out how the coffee is here, ignore the 4-star rating and read a different review. This place is an awesome place to read, study, meeting up with some friends. There are 3 parking lots within 1 block of this place so getting here is easy. They have an entire upstairs sitting area with plenty of tables. Plenty of outlets here as well but its always wise to bring a power strip with you in case (no thats not a weird thing to do & yes more people should do this). The atmosphere is just relaxing and is where memories will be created. Music is generally indie and have live performances on Saturdays. Red Rock is definitely one of a kind :)

Im torn between a 2 star and a 4 star. This Downtown Mountain View coffee shop is a nice little shop on the corner. When entering, I noticed the work benches which convert to game tables in the evening since there are board games next to the table. However, the espresso alone is over $3. The pourovers are $5. However, they were short staffed and couldnt help me with a pourover. So, I ordered the espresso and an almond croissant. They asked if I wanted seltzer water with the espresso to which I accepted. They ended up giving me just a plain croissant and no seltzer water with the espresso. Cons: Overpriced, understaffed, lack of attention to details Pros: Decent tasting coffee, work benches, nice location

When I work from home, I love coming here for my morning coffee and pastries. Ive never met a pastry here that I didnt like. They have single serve drip coffees and a separate line for it, too. I think theyre the only place in the area that does latte art. They have open mic nights which, of course, are hit and miss. But, come here during the week and the place is full of lap-tops (free WiFi!) and tech workers. A note on their chai lattes, theyre homemade and tasty, if you like the spicier side of chai. If youre used to the fake and sweet stuff, you wont find it here. Go to Peets or Starbucks, which are, after all the same company.
