This unassuming sandwich shop ranks amongst the worlds top great eateries. From the plastic coated tablecloths, to the plastic grapevine, there is something for everybody at the Italian Deli. It serves as a popular hang-out for the local high school kids, a reliable eatery for nearby office workers, and a meeting point for the real old timers (the Los Altoans who remember when there were orchards in Los Altos, and anybody who drove a Mercedes was a show-off). Its most famous sandwich, known as "The Godfather" was the brainchild of Nick Testa (now retired), and was a shrewd means of ensuring that otherwise slow selling deli-meat like Prosciutto and Mortadella would be consumed, thus ensuring a good stock rotation which ensured freshness (back when most Americans were used to eating Kraft "american processed cheese food" and mustard on Wonderbread, and nobody had even heard of Cappuccino ).

This place has been an institution of Los Altos for decades. They still make great sandwiches with great bread, but portion sizes have gotten smaller and prices have gone up. Operating a deli like this in downtown Los Altos has probably become much more expensive over the years so its certainly understandable. I still recommend coming here though. They have some great sandwiches like the Godfather and Ironman. Try their Dutch crunch bread.

This place used to have the best sandwiches in Los Altos. Sadly, it has been going downhill in the last year. The sandwiches are now mediocre and the quality is not that great anymore. It certainly cant be called an Italian Deli without any actual imported Italian meats, cheeses, and other deli products. Walk down to AG Ferrari if you want a better sandwich.

Read the good reviews and decided to give this a try. Ordered the the meatball sandwich on Dutch crunch roll. Unfortunately, they microwaved the sandwich, I guess to heat up the meatballs. Well, the Dutch crunch was not crunchy anymore, instead was soft and chewy, totally destroyed the texture and flavors. Very disappointed!

Ordered the chicken salad sandwich, the giant pickle, and the macaroni salad. I thought all were delicious. I got the toasted bread with the crunch top. I ordered delivery so I further toasted it in the over (400 degrees for 10 more minutes) and it was delicious! I like the extra crunch.

Love this deli! My favorite on the Peninsula. I grew up in NJ and delis are a way of life. This is the only one Ive been to that makes a sandwich thats even close. The Iron Man on a soft/sweet roll is the best (get extra dressing too)... but all of them are great.

The sandwiches are Ok but they have no flavor the only good thing here is on Wednesday there chicken sandwich special. I do not recommend their salad I tried the potatoe salad and it had no flavor at all.

RUDE... Called to ask for the owner, and the lady said "Are you going to order something or not" I then repeated that I wanted to speak with the owner/manager and she hung up the phone.

Great lunch spot for hearty sandwiches- meat lovers will love their Godfather and the Avocado Delight will please vegetarians. Limited seating outside great for sunny days.

Sandwiches were made to order super fast. There was not too much seating but enough for the amount of people eating on-site. Good meatball sub!

Used to be the best place for a sandwich in Los Altos, get the godfather or the Ironman, those are your best bet for a good lunch.

Just dont touch your sack before the cashier has secured your sandwich, he can be quite testy. Cash only, no credit cards.
