La Châtaigne opened last week to my delight. I have been getting pastries and bread from Michael Faircloth for years. They have been operating at Orinda and Martinez farmers markets and today they opened their first store front. Today is a soft open but they will be expanding their offerings as time goes on. My favorites are the chocolate croissants and olive bread in the shape of a pretzel known as a fougasse. I also really enjoy their prosciutto and cheese croissants. They also have cinnamon buns and much more. Their bread is amazing. My favorite is their large country loaf. You can toast it at home and the loaf will last all week on your counter. I really recommend trying this French pastry shop. You will not be disappointed.

The Faircloths also run the La Noisette booth at the Orinda and Martinez farmers markets. Everything Michael bakes is good, Ive tried the croissants, the cannelé, the Kouign-Amann (which is the best Ive had in the whole SF Bay Area so far), the fougasse, kamut with fruit, danishes (the one he makes with alhambra valley pears is the best), and the chocolate hazelnut cookies (ask why you should eat these upside down), and the pain de campagne. Really its one of the highlights of my week to treat myself at this bakery, and they are great people to talk with. I hope they prosper in Lafayette.

A bakery with soul. Quality is never stated in the goods made fresh daily - it is just there. There is southern French and norther Italian ancestry in the family that owns La Chataigne (translation: chestnut) and it definitely shows. They are open early with pastries and the breads are out of the oven - available around 10 AM. Their croissants are made with French butter and you can definitely the difference. They are as good as you would find in Paris!

Beautiful family running this bakery with buttery and heavenly pastries! The croissants have a hint of sweetness at the end and the almond chocolate version is to die for! A must try!
