I spent some time with people from China who were only familiar with LA settings but not SD ambiance. As a SD local, I had the opportunity to show the out-of-towners a little bit of SDs foodie scene. On a Saturday night around 6:30pm, most of the outside tables were taken up because of the romantic fire lighting offered tableside. My party and I ate inside which wasnt as pleasing to the eye but it was fair in terms of seating arrangements. I think this establishment deserves 3.5 stars for both food and service. For service and friendliness-4 stars. Polite hostess. Polite waiter. The waiter was very helpful in going into detail about ingredients in each dish and recommended his favorites. He ran through the items really fast though and if I wasnt a foodie expert and Food Network fan, I would have been completely lost in his rambling (like my friend who sat beside me and tried to make sense of the waiters suggestions). The food choices we made were for the 4-course tasting for 85/person. It included a starter, another starter (2nd course), the main course, and dessert. Because it was a 4-course tasting, I did expect that portions to be smaller but I was really surprised by how little food we were served for the main course. Disappointed in their generosity but overall the Tuna Sashimi, white poached prawns, lamb rack, and pumpkin creme brulee were all delicious in their own way. Everything was made with great care and flavors melded well together. I also tried the oysters but they were not in season because the oysters were really small. In addition, the bleu cheese crusted filet mignon was kind of dry for being medium rare. Other desserts such as the chocolate budino (pudding) and the tableside vanilla ice cream made with liquid nitrogen were both really yummy. For dates or celebrations, this is a great place to go! However, theres not much that I would come back for because although the food was yummy, it was not mindblowing in the sense that I would need to come back to try other things.

I cant discuss the food, but I can discuss the service. I made an 8:00 PM reservation on a Thursday night. I had my choice of times, but made it later to be safe. We were walking the beach and there was no sunset to be seen this night, so we wandered up to the restaurant just before 7:30. Not quite half of the outdoor tables were being used, and I am being generous. There were 2 tables inside. The place was *empty*, just as it was when we strolled by a couple nights earlier and actually thought it was closed. I went to the hostess stand, introduced myself, said we were a bit early but ready. The girl announced without thought or hesitation that we "can sit at the bar and have drinks, as you cant be seated until closer to 8". I looked around, looked at her, looked back at the empty restaurant, looked for hidden cameras to make sure I wasnt being punkd, then asked her very genuinely if she was being serious? She said nothing for 15 seconds. Then she said to wait, shed see what she could do. I opened OpenTable again and changed my ressie to 7:30 just to prove the point. My wife said a few choice words and I agreed, and we just walked out after waiting about 3 min. As we were about 30 feet away, she came back and called for me but I just kept moving. I wouldnt have spent a nickel at that point. I grew up in the restaurant business. On a dead night, when someone who took the time to make a reservation shows up early, you THANK THEM for being there, then rush them to a table. You dont get snooty and big time them, then pretend to do them a favor. We fell in love with Coronado and want to return. We stayed at the Marriott resort and were considering other places. That treatment assured us that it wont be at the Del though. Easily the snobbiest thing ever done to me. If you dont agree, trust me when I tell you that you simply had to be there.

My sister and I had reservations for late seating on New Years Eve. The offering was a 5 course dinner with a champagne toast and music for $185 each. Wine and gratuity were extra. We were promptly seated at the designated time. The main waitress took our wine and entree order, asking if we had any food allergies, and delivered the final check. Staff were rushing every which way delivering the courses, clearing tables, etc. I mean rushing (sweating). My second course was delivered before we were even done with the first course. Being a foodie, I had expected the waitress to come over and describe the course. This was especially important because we had to send back the raw fish appetizer as neither of us eat raw fish. No where in the name of the course could I have figured out that the fish was going to be raw. Fortunately, they were able to replace it with an arugula salad, hardly an alternative for the substitution. All of the other courses were fine. When it came to dessert, it was a "shared" dessert, which was not as advertised. Five course dinner, unless specified, doesnt include a "shared" dessert. Final bill $250 each! VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Dined there 11/15/2016. Not what we wanted. We were expecting sophisticated and artistically prepared dishes. The first impression was great: the servant (Mark) was definitely a professional. His descriptions made me salivate. We ordered the tasting menu. Oysters came first, very large, with a heavy metallic taste, no interesting idea, just oysters. Foie gras was sitting on an oil-soaked biscuit, nothing particular in that combination. Catch of the day, was a chunk of some Mexican fish, bulky with a fishy smell, properly garnished. The duck was just a duck. Everything in this place seemed prepared by someone who is following a cooking textbook to the letter. The original materials were of fine quality. Unfortunately, all dishes were lacking originality. No need to go there and pay their check unless you just wanted to fill your stomach with reasonable feeding components and do not care how much it costs. The chef does not match the servant. By the way, I submitted this review to Open Table and they never posted it.

I have lived in San Diego for two years and for some reason never made it to the Hotel Del Coronado. It is a very historical hotel/restaurant situated on the southwest portion of Coronado Island and the view is just amazing. The restaurant is situated right off the beach as one would expect and it is quite relaxing to have a meal and drinks while the sun is setting. My girlfriend and I visited during the Oktoberfest celebration and despite not having any authentic style music playing the waiters and waitresses were wearing lederhosen. The brats and fried potatoes were very tasty and I could tell some of the other food offered was being enjoyed by others nearby. The hotel itself is very cool looking to complete the atmospheric excellence of this location. I was overall pleased with the service and food we received and there are not many places in SoCal that have better views. Highly recommended.
