As Portland locals, we love Miyake. However, we were severely disappointed by our experience this evening in the new location. We were not impressed with the updated venue. Though tiny, we loved the intimate and cozy feel of the former spot. Walking into the new location it felt cold, generic and had a flavor like we were eating in a hotel lounge. We were also very disappointed that BYOB has been eliminated. While the old location used to have a number of specials that never failed to disappoint, there was not a single special running this evening. We were pleased to see the menu had remained mostly the same, but we found our favorite first courses to be overcooked (pork belly and duck breast) and our mains were okay (spicy scallop and super toro). The food quality seemed so different from our past experiences. The service was mediocre; we found the server to be less than friendly and she didnt ask us how any of our food was. My husband and I were so disappointed and would be hard pressed to return again in the near future.

This was one of the better meals Ive had in a long time of eating out. I did the omakase with the sake pairing and was blown away by the quality of the food and creativity of the dishes. The tasting menu ran from a hot sea urchin dish to a beautiful array of sashimi to an almost custard consistency soup. A highlight was the roasted oyster in some type of savory miso broth. It was expensive, but a wise man knows the difference between cost and value. Miyake provides value. Our server was full of information about each dish, though some of the explanations were a little long winded when combined with info about my sake. The interior doesnt quite match the quality and creativity of the food, feeling a little like a stripmall interior with the bright lights and slightly aged, pop electronica. If you have the cash or want to celebrate a special occasion, then eat here and enjoy their high calibre sushi and Japanese dishes made with true craftsmanship.

This is a review based on 2x of the Chefs Tasting Menu ($75/e) First off, this isnt the kind of place you go to get a "sushi boat" or the like. Its pretty fancy Japanese -- but one of those times its worth it. Ive been eating sushi in Korean (yes many of the sushi places are actually Korean owned) since I was a kid, and consider myself pretty discerning about taste and price. Furthermore, Ive never been the biggest fan of warm Japanese food in America -- as its usually run-of-the-mill teriyaki/etc. This place changed my perspective. I loved the seafood-focused Chefs tasting menu (even though many of the dishes were cooked). I would say nearly all of the dishes were very successful. In my opinion, there are (2) things you should be ready to do if you want to get the most out of Miyake: 1) Prepare to pay (though not the most expensive place out there). 2) Prepare to have an open mind and try new things.

Since opening his first restaurant in 2007, Masa Miyake (also of Pai Men Miyake and Miyake Diner, an izakaya which is slated to open early this fall) has garnered a devoted fan base of locals and epicureans afar for its meticulous preparation of pristine sushi and other Japanese delicacies, of which many ingredients are sourced directly from Miyake Farm. As you can imagine, the toughest decision is to figure out what to eat. And while we take no issue with paying for quality, its a rare (and welcome, always) treat to be offered exceptional food at an equally exceptional price. This summer, Miyake launched an $18 bento lunch box with 6 ever-changing items including sashimi, maki, green salad, grilled fish, a rice bowl with grilled meat and pickles. And a bowl of miso soup to shift your appetite into high gear. Just be sure to request a seat at the sushi bar.

My fiance and I had dinner at Miyake this past Saturday for our early Valentines Day dinner. What a very special evening! The wait staff and sushi chefs were all above and beyond friendly and helpful. We sat at the sushi bar, which allowed us to watch the chefs at work and the pleasure of chatting with (and admiring the technique of!) the owner. ...and the food, ah the food, was an adventure in tastes and textures. We shared the $75 course and splurged on a toro roll at the end. Each dish was delicious and unique in presentation and flavor from the glass eel to the sea urchin to the needle fish to the salmon sashimi. I highly recommend this restaurant! (Side note: It is not inexpensive to dine there, but the quality of the food is well worth the price.)

Wonderful experience! I called to ask about reservations and they do take reservations. I also told the girl that my husband and I had about an hour before catching our cruise. She was very helpful when we got to the restaurant, pointing out the things that would most likely take too long to cook. That was very nice. The food: AWESOME. Im from VT so I dont get a lot of really fresh seafood or sushi and it was was delicious! The location is great, only a block from the waterfront which made walking to our cruise super easy. All in all, I love this place and will go back if I am ever in Portland again!

The BEST food I have ever put in my mouth. Period. I lived in Japan for two years. Cant remember anything this exquisite. Had a nice waiter, cute redhead, very helpful. Food did take a while, that is only because it was art in the making. Pricey tab but if you want the best, you best be ready to pay for it. 125 reviews.. almost 5 star.. buffet hounds and vegetarians are the only people bringing the average down. Pay them no mind. Infact, I added two more stars to make up for the others with poor taste. 7 star.

I was very excited to try Miyake, as I heard good things. I was disappointed. The wait staff was unfriendly and told us we had to order appetizers and the entrees at the same time. The service was extremely slow. We ordered a lot of food, but at the end we were still hungry and had a very expensive tab - there are much better sushi places in Portland. I will go to Fuji or Yosaku from now own - do not waste your time with Miyake!

My girlfriend and I went here for dinner on a recommendation and ordered the Chefs tasting menu. It was super fresh, the atmosphere was romantic and it made for the perfect first evening out in Portland. My girlfriend lived in Japan for half her life and usually avoids "americanized" Japanese restaurants but she was blown away by Miyake. We liked it so much we sought out his Pai Men restaurant for lunch the next day.

Oh, my gosh!!! The sushi rice and the fish are all so delicious. Their bento box special is awesome. The server actually wrote down what was in the bento box because she didnt know ASL and couldnt sign to me. Excellent service with great smile. Thanks. Im definitely coming back when Im in the neighborhood. Or better yet, open a location in DC! Near Gallaudet University. :-)

This is a small sushi restaurant run by Miyake-san from Japan. The quality of sushi is amazingly high by any standards. Even in Japan, it is hard to find this level of sushi restaurant. The price is very reasonable despite the quality of what he serves. The ambiance is casual and pleasant with a helpful and knowledgeable waiter.
