My favorite burger place in San Mateo. You can build your burger from the ground up - choose your meat (or veggie patty), long list of toppings, and the type of bun. The cooks here know how to grill "rare" and boil eggs to perfection - completely yellow yolk, no green edging. We love their golden-colored shoe string French fries (order no salt, which will get you just a tad of salt). This place can get crowded during the weekends, but the wait is worth it! Service is quick. Food comes out hot. There is a full service bar if you need a libation with your burger. Prices are reasonable for the quality you get. Returned again yesterday 5/16/17: I can now add this The Counter is super kid-friendly. Brought 13 months old twins. Wait staff were super friendly and helpful, explained how the "customization" works to my friend. Able to accommodate by tandem stroller with no issues and was able to use their high chairs. Our waitress brought us water in sippy cups and paper plates for my kiddos as part of the service. Came back a few times to check in on us. Tried a new custom combo. Love the Brioche bun, feta cheese, black bean salsa and roasted grape tomatoes on my grilled-to-order rare 1/3 lb burger.

I have eaten at The Counter in Mountain View a few times and have always had a fabulous experience. Thus I was very very disappointed with my dinner at the San Mateo location. First, I have the say the food was still delicious. The parmesan fries are my favorite! However the service was horrendous. The waiter took our drink orders and disappeared. The manager took our food order, the bar staff gave us our drinks and the kitchen staff served our food. Everything was very slow, I would assume because our server could not be found. When our server would reappear, he never bothered checking in with us and was difficult, if not impossible, to flag down. Lastly, I orders a custom milkahake and was shocked for it to arrive in a small tumbler. I have made the same order in Mountain View and gotten a full sized glass with the shake stir cup. Why is this not consistent between restaurants? The price is the same! Needless to say I will not be going back.

Went to celebrate my daughters kinder graduation. Only to take a bite of my daughters sandwich At the end and discover what I had her eat. Simple grill cheese - bread and cheese. With stale, nasty and disgusting butter. At which point Im not sure what would of made the situation better. Because my baby ate something that should of brought joy and satisfaction not what she experienced. Wonder how this oil is used in other dishes that have more richer flavors so the old stale butter taste is not as noticed?!? Not something expected at such restaurant. The service was lacking. Wrong/incomplete order, over the time we were eating a beer couldnt be delivered. (It was not full house in the restaurant either). To put it simply, counter you have stepped Your Game way down! Disappointed for selecting as a place to celebrate a very special event.

Actually decent place to have drinks from their full bar. A chain restaurant that appeals to everybody and everyone. A basket of shoestring fries is a much better deal than a side of fries. Condiment dip-it French style with mustard instead of ketchup. Ask, "Pardon me, would you have Grey Poupon?" And they will reply with, "But, of course!" This particular location has an upper loft that keeps the wait staff in shape as they jaunt up and down the stairs several times. No problem splitting ice cream floats to share or glamorize them for adults by adding alcohol. Best deal is free toppings list which feels unlimited when building burgers like Dagwood Bumstead. Cheese sandwich and BLT sandwich served at a different The Counter locations were disappointing and can be cooked smarter by a fifth grader at home.

I came here with two other adults and a baby for lunch during the week. First off, they have high chairs, and lots of food that babies enjoy, like hamburgers and sweet potato fries. The service was good, and we were able to get in and out before the little one got frustrated with being stuck in a chair. The food was great, as usual. The burgers there are excellent. The sweet sriracha sauce is quite good too. If you havent been to the Counter before, how it works is they give you a sheet of paper with all of the different options for your burger. You check off all the toppings things that youd like on your burger, including what kind of bun youd like (if at all).

I love The Counter and this was the first time I came to this location. Unfortunately I was bitterly disappointed. My roommate and I got our milkshakes a couple minutes before our burgers. And when I got my burger, it was missing guacamole and I didnt have my fries. It took quite some time to flag down the waitress and I ended up having to flag down someone else. To add to it, our burgers were luke warm and medium, when we had ordered them medium-rare. I love The Counter but I wont be returning here or recommending this location.

This place used to be better. They have changed their menu a bunch of times from when they started. The burgers are reliably inconsistent. You would think that since burgers are their mainstay, they would have nailed making them. They havent unfortunately. Burgers consistently come out over or undercooked based on what Ive ordered. That said, the skinny fries are delicious. Nice abs salty which is how I like them. If they could only cook their burgers to the requested temp....

Have been twice, once alone and once with my kids. I like the customizability of the menu. Select bread style, meat, size of patty, toppings, etc. The burgers and fries are fine. The shakes are watery and disappointing even though they are also customizable with flavourings and add-ins. I found the price excessive for what you are getting.

Saturday afternoon at noon, took 15 minutes to get seated despite many open tables. Another 45 minutes for our 3 burgers to arrive after ordering. And confusing burger names. Korean BBQ burger for $9.95 became a Korean BBQ Steak burger for $15.95. Didnt realize the difference until the bill arrived.

Fries are all good. Build your own burger with good ingredients. Great atmosphere for families, and the service is top notch. Very efficient, and when mistakes are made they quickly make things OK and check back to make sure youre happy. A well-run restaurant. Their lamb burgers are very good.

Great place for a burger. Custom make you own creation! But it might take a few goes to get it right, I learnt the blue cheese was overwhelming! But choose from the menu too. I love the fitout, kind of like a 60s diner but modern at the same time. Nice staff, try it if you havent yet.

Was not impressed with the service or burger. I know you make your own but the burger to me was just poor in flavor. Its always crowded inside and almost every time Ive gone its been freezing inside, and they cant shut it off because it gets to hot and uncomfortable upstairs

Spendy spendy. But where else are you going to get a 1/2 lb. ground bison patty on a bed of lettuce with pickle relish and feta? Seriously, the burgers are good! And you can get everything tricked out just how you like it. The sweet potato fries are good too, and the shakes.
