Late one Friday night we were redirected us to Khyber Pass. Our original intention was to head down to Fremont to an Afghani restaurant known for good food and terrible service. But Khyber Pass was such a breath of fresh air, and beat the rest of the well known Afghani restaurants hands down in every category. Service - Gotta start here because the service was so good we were almost laughing. We had been used to other Afghani restaurants waitresses avoiding eye contact and forcing you to have to run them down just to get your order taken. Tonight at Khyber Pass we had three different people ask if our order was taken (just to be sure), bread brought promptly, and water glasses constantly refilled. Our waitress Katrina (blond hair) after hearing it was out first time at KB gave us numerous thoughtful suggestions. When we mentioned how much we enjoyed her suggested appetizer of Mantu (Afghan styled dumplings, stuffed with ground beef, onions and spices, topped with yoghurt sauce and split peas) and that we were going to save some for our son, she ran back to the kitchen and brought us another order in a take-out box.... for free! Seriously?! Later after the restaurant closed at 9:30 numerous latecomers headed out obviously disappointed. We saw the manager run back out to the parking lot and invite them all in to eat. We stayed chatting with the owner Sultana and the wait staff until 11:00. Quite the family feeling which was a nice change of pace. Food - Excellent in every way. I ordered the" Beef Tikka Kabob" with tri -tip that was well marinated and perfectly charred. Many kebobs can be dry and tough but these were moist and tender with a flavorful seasoning. My wife ordered the "Quabili Pallow" with a lightly seasoned lamb just falling off the shank, and the blend of raisin and carrots adding just the right amount of sweetness to the browned basmati rice. Ambiance - Clean and nicely decorated with a raised group seating area in the back. KB is in an old strip mall, but parking is plentiful and the seating comfortable. Owner - Sultana and her husband and family (niece is the bubbly waitress with the big smile) keep this restaurant feeling family owned without being too cliquish. When Sultana heard that it was our first time, she pulled up a chair and said we had to try a dessert she just made called "Firni" (Afghan pudding with milk, rosewater, cardamom, slices of almonds, and pistachios). Note that this is AFTER we already paid our bill! She meven suggested some nice hot teas to go with the "Firni" and gestured over to Katrina to bring some our way. Though we were full the home made dessert and tea was a great way to finish off the meal. Dont expect to get free stuff like we did, but expect to be treated like royalty. Khyber Pass will now be one of our East bay go-to restaurants, and justly deserves all the Yelp 5-star ratings.

I have never had afghani food, but after coming here, I have been looking up afghani places closer to me like a fiend. This is for the NON-meat dishes. I am a serious carnivore, but I decided to go family style and not do meat. I am not sure if Ill ever do the meat side of the menu again! We had the pumpkin borani (light, and very fresh tasting), the bolani (came with spicy yogurt that you smear all over - it is fantastic), and the spiced cauliflower (basically, sauteed cauliflower that was pretty spicy but also felt like a "light" dish). You can vary the spiciness of the yogurt and we went for hot... I was glad we did. I have always been the "Mcdonalds" lover that hates veggies, but Im very glad I tried the vegetarian dishes. I am particularly surprised about how over-the-moon I was with the cauliflower dish; it tasted healthy but spicy. I had initially thought the yelp score was a bit inflated and that the restaurant would be closer to a "3.5 to 4-star" restaurant in SF but it really deserves its rave reviews.

Awesome food ! The decor and the ambience though is a fair bit dated. Theres nothing wrong with the authentic Middle eastern look they are going for, but most of the drapes seem like they havent been washed in ages and the insides feel a bit "stuffy" and over decorated - especially when the decorations are all collecting dust. Cant beat the food or the warmth of the host though.

Hey Guy
I loved this restaurant!!! The authentic Afghan food was delicious, just like I had when I was in Afghanistan! Better even. You will not be disappointed! Friendly wait staff, gorgeous decor, cozy atmosphere, fantastic food... I could go on. For an extra special experience, call ahead and reserve the special room with the low dining table.

Good tasty food.. though I have tried more flavorful and succulent Afghani pilaf.. was a tad dry this one.. the chapli kebab was OK too.. everything seemed a bit dry and not fresh.. The place is kinda obscure and hidden away. Could definitely do with a fresh up on the inside.. I liked the traditional sitting arrangement..

My husband and I came in from out of state for a wedding. We had a party of 18 and they were able to accommodate us all! One of the owners pick a huge selection of food for us to share. The food was outstanding and the service was amazing! Id highly recommend this family owned spot! Family friendly as well!

This is one of my favorite restaurants. This is one of the few places that can make a gloomy day better. I really LOVE their pumpkin dish. My husband swears their chicken kabobs cannot be touched. In general, everything is perfectly seasoned and cooked. The staff is attentive and kind. Definitely a must go!

I frequent here for lunch and they give good portions for the price in the area! Im a fan of the Quaballi Pallow, Szebze Challow, and Bulani. For dessert the Firni is good. They do have a $20 minimum for credit cards, but that isnt a hard number to spend when eating for 2.

I have been here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner, both times the food was sensational and the service was impeccable! Cant wait to go back again. If you are into trying new things, be sure to get the Borani Kadoo... it will blow your mind!

If you are in Dublin, you must visit this restaurant. Best food and great service. There are very few Afghan restaurants that serve good and authentic Afghan dishes. Thank you Khyber Pass for making my sisters birthday a special one. Much love,

I cant complement their interior decor enough! It felt like we were transported to Afghanistan. They used their small space very creatively. The decor is quite unique and added to our dining experience. The fish curry and Doogh tasted spot on!
