My kids and I go here WHENEVER were in town. The small joint has a nice nostalgic feel reminiscent of " The Happy Days." Who can forget about the Fonz? Chaps, decked out with1940/50s era soda shop stools and booth seating adorned with a retro metal base and coat racks on the end, its a place where you just feel at home. Its not pretentious, there are no gimmicks, what you see is what you get; and thats damn good old fashioned ice cream! Their banana ice cream is made with real bananas, none of that fake extract jazz ( and theyre not afraid to admit it!). Their hand-dipped cherry vanilla scoop is true to the old fashion scene; just big chunks of cherry in a vanilla cream base ( not tainted with any sort of coloring!) its what dreams are made of; well, mine at least. And their cookies and cream is ALWAYS a classic. They mix it just the right way so there are still good sized bits of Oreos in the mix. If you have little ones, bring wipes. Things WILL get messy.

The building is on its last leg but somehow manages to still be charming- the lady serving Ice cream has a WHOLE lot to do with that. Theres old school ice cream parlor seating and a counter with limited space. Some nostalgic posters and things hanging from various locations. Didnt see a bathroom but we were only in there for a few mins. The ice cream is DELICIOUS. And the donuts... OMG... I inhaled it like a new shop vac- it was so buttery soft. Perfect sweetness, ice cream and the donut. The outdoor seating is cool, especially with the street performers singing and playing. A very cool stop for anyone travelling through or a low-key family outing. Ive starred it on my Google maps cause I plan on coming back. No pics of the ice cream because it disappeared before I could even get my camera out

This tiny ice cream shop, reminiscent of a 50s diner (complete with boat-loads of vintage Coca-Cola paraphernalia), is a local favorite. The staff is friendly and they actually make all of their ice cream on the premises, boasting an impressive selection of flavors, including: Oreo, cheesecake, birthday cake and pistachio in homemade waffle cones. In addition to coffee and sweets (and homemade donuts), they also offer diner classics from the grill to patrons who seat themselves in the handful of booths. Grab a scoop to go and enjoy it as you promenade under the stars along Charlottesvilles Historic Downtown Mall - one of the longest pedestrian malls in the country.

We love uncle Tony. I my self have been going to chaps ice cream for over 10+ years I love the family atmosphere. They always have good music cant go wrong with the oldies. I know every flavor by heart and they always have what I want so the little kid comes out. Homemade waffle cones homemade donuts homemade cookies great food options an amazing ice cream this is the type of store you cant go wrong and not to mention they have a great barista right out front. I will be coming back for many years to come

We enjoyed a delicious breakfast at Chaps! Omelette, eggs over easy, delicious home fries with onions and mushrooms, lots of coffee and wonderful service. Kim was our server and she was a hoot. Lots of banter back and forth and a really delightful lady. Sorry we didnt get back there on Sunday. We will be back to Chaps the next time we visit Charlottesville. What a beautiful place!

Tony probably does not know this, but I once wrote a letter to C-ville touting his burgers over those that have been traditionally rated Charlottesvilles Best". That has been an urban myth, Those burgers were/are miserable misshapen scraps in comparison Only a slight exaggeration. Of course,this was declared in one of my arrogant outbursts.

Chaps is an awesome place to go and eat. And to visit cause you are at home here. Sit and talk with Tony the owner and staff. Who are all great. My favorites are Tony and Brenda aka Granny. I had been down had a bad day go here it will change. Love the food treat you like family. Just need to keep grill open longer.

We liked the black bean burgers, and the ice cream is pretty darned good. My only disappointment was they wont start making the rum raisin ice cream until next week. The owner gave me a taste of the marinating raisins, and I believe it may be worth driving to Charlottesville just for that flavor.

We were very happy with our lunches. The prices seemed reasonable and the atmosphere is little diner or lunch counter. Our BLT and ham & cheese sandwiches were simple and delicious. It was just what we wanted. Service was excellent.

Chaps ice cream is terrific. So many flavors. My favorite is the "4 Cs". Milkshakes are great too. They make their own waffle cones. Ive never eaten REAL food here, looks good though.

The ice cream is nothing special. The place is worn out and dirty and the owner is less than friendly - ie arrogant. Not sure why the health department has not shut the place down.
