As a thru-hiker I had heard about the Doyle long before I arrived. I had heard good and bad but mostly that it was a staple and I should check it out. First off, this place is NOT hiker friendly; it is (at best) hiker tolerant. They dont really want you there and it is pretty clear. The rooms are fine and the building is super cool. The history of the building is over shadowed by the complete lack of care. The bathrooms are atrocious. But lets be real, its a cheap hangout for hikers, except dont plan on hanging out. I hear the food is good however they were so rude that I preferred not to give anymore of my money to them. Instead I went to the very hiker friendly The Pub a few doors down. I would recommend you pass this one by. Oh, I also got bit by a brown recluse there and am currently off the trail working off a fever and ugly wound. Yay! ( It is an old hotel and a spider bite could happen almost anywhere, so this information should be taken as such). I mentioned the bite to an employee and his response was "ya, that happens a lot around here." I feel you should at least care about customers or your business enough to lie about that one.

The Doyle Hotel was one of the coolest places Ive been to in a long time! Im a foodie thats for sure, but I was blown away by the friendliness and good tasting food here. We stopped in on a sunday afternoon (they opened a few minutes beforehand. We sat down in the dining area, which was pretty small: three tables, an 8 seat bar, jukebox and internet accessable computer. There also was a pool room and an upper floor with rooms for rent. The food took quite some time to come out of the kitchen, 45 minutes to an hour, which didnt really bother me, our party ordered a cup of chicken soup, cup of chili, southwest burger and a cheesesteak. Menu was about 4 - 5 pages long, and they had some daily food & drink specials. The Doyle is pretty famous for hosting Appalachian Trail hikers, theres a posterboard in the front enterance with people who have made the whole hike and sent letters, pictures and postcards back to the hotel. Accepts cash, visa, mastercard and has private parking out back.

This is one of my favorite places on earth, its weathered, run down even. The bar is the kind of local dive where everyone knows your name, theres a pool table, and very inexpensive rooms for the degenerate hikers and riff-raff that find themselves in need of one, half cheap hotel, half boarding house, but it used to be a famous grand hotel back when knights were bold etc. The thing that makes this place stand out are the proprietors Pat and Vicky, and the quirky people who inhabit the Doyle, the random travelers, the hikers passing "thru" on a once-in-a-lifetime epic journey, and the folks who return year after year from far and wide for nostalgic visits, or for a night off the trail. This is one of those magic places. Give Vicky a hug for me, and remeber to tell Pat how much you liked the tuna melt or whatever he made you, because you will.

Several hikers said, I had to check this place out. Sadly, it is not what I expected. Not really sure why so many people give this hotel such high rating. There must be some special glasses they put on to see it differently. The only people being truthful are the one that talk about how run down it is and how it really is not hiker friendly. The idea that AT hikers want it to be restored is great, it needs it. All my experiences prior to this have been wonderful blessings. Everyone couldnt be nicer and trail magic is great. The owners & this place were not. Right now I am in shock & glad I found another place to stay.

This is the most disgusting place Ive stayed at while hiking the Appalachian Trail and I have been sleeping in the woods for the past 4 months so thats saying something. The sheets were dirty (visible dirt piled on top of the sheets) when we arrived in the room, the bathrooms were disgusting, and it looked like nothing in the entire building had been swept or mopped in years. Dont stay here if you can help it! However, despite the horrid accommodations, the food was pretty good at the restaurant.

Some hikers hate it. Some hikers love it. It has good things about it, and of course, bad. Me? My review goes in the middle. I didnt love the bathroom that was in poor shape, or the dead bugs on the floor of my room because no one had sweeped in who knows how long, however, the building has some amazing character. The bar is awesome, and has really excellent food and drinks. The staff are fun to hang out with as well. Its an interesting place and an Appalachian Trail thru-hiker tradition.

I found my private room in the turn of the 20th century style hotel to be comfortable and quiet. The shower was hot with good water pressure. The location is town center with great breakfast across the street, pizza and subs nearby, and an ice cream shop that was killer. The Doyle Restaurant has a good menu. I had heard questionable comments about the Doyle. But I would say it remains relevant and iconic to the A.T. hiking experience and worth a stay on a through-hike.

The Doyle is an Appalachian Trail institution and a "must stop" destination while hiking the AT near Duncannon. Heres the deal; its a dive bar and its perfect! The food is fantastic, theres quality beers on tap and the owners are awesome. Visit the Doyle and youll feel at home and in the company of friends. Forget the noise about it being old or dirty; it has character. The "Hotel" is basically a Hiker Hostel. Take it as it is and enjoy the visit.

Its the doyal.. Appalachian Trail hiker hostel with a bar. * Old school historic building once owned by coors brewing company. Shared bathroom on each floor, no a/c, has pool table , good food, cheap beers, good hostility. The Establishment get the occasional traveler or passerby to step into the bar but this still is a Appalachian Trail hiker hostel ..

Very good place. We came back for second time just for the food. Absolutely good. And the price is right. Homemade soup, fresh food and good service. Theres billiard table in one room, hotel up stair, computer, jukebox, drinks, beer. The place is ancient is 100 years old and in downtown Duncannon. Definitely will come back again.

Eat here, dont sleep here. The Good: amazing burgers. Dont miss them. The Bad: the rooms. Dirty sheets, very dusty, smelled of cigarettes, and no AC. The showers were very hot but the bathrooms were disgusting. If youre a hiker and need a place to stay, its an option, but be prepared that it wont be pretty.

I LOVE THE DOYLE. Once I walked 1143 miles just to see Vickey and Kelly. :) Their food is excellent. Their portions are more generous. Most of all you will fall in love with the owners. They are the best of people! I would walk another 1000 miles just to hug Vickey.
