Since moving to PDX proper, Ive missed having a quaint coffee shop to relax in. In steps the Bipartisan Cafe. On the corner of 79th and Stark is where the cafe lays. Its a quirky street with shops of all sorts, bars, and even a movie theater that shows old and current films. This area of town in general is a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon/evening. Sooo...lets be honest, most places these days have making a latte down to a science. So it boils down to a few small personal preferences when looking for coffee. Atmosphere, customer service, and selection of flavors. Those three things make up the base of my personal criteria for a good coffee shop. The Bipartisan Cafe has more character than an ensemble cast on NBC. Antique political busts and posters line the walls. The floor is hard wood and worn. It has the feel of history but in a modern/ironic fashion. Parking is a bit challenging on the weekends. But most of the time you can find a spot around on one of the near by blocks, and its free street parking. No meter maids crouching in the shadows, waiting for your meter to expire. As you walk in youre greeted by a competent and polite barista. The menus is off to the left of the cashier. When paying they except the following. Payment Methods: Visa, MasterCard debit/credit. BPC uses Stumptown coffee. A local company with multiple locations throughout Portland Oregon. There is nothing like supporting a local small business that is also supporting a local business. Youre getting quality here folks, keep your money in the community as much as possible. Seating is not an issue. They have over 12 tables inside. A Coffee Bar with 3 more seats and outdoor seating for those warm summer/spring days. The outdoor seating is covered by an awning if you feel the need to have a sit-down on a rainy day. There are multiple couches laying to the right as you walk in, with a few end tables and enough power outlets for you multi-taskers. Bring a book, bring your laptop, forget about the rest of the world and get comfy. If youre like me and love your interwebs and never leave the house without some internet device, youre in luck. They have wifi and it is free with the purchase of a baked good and or coffee. The food selection is a bit above average for a cafe of its size. Sandwiches, bagels, soups, eggs and the best damn pie ever. Not only do they have pie, but they have vegan pie available too. So if you have been looking for a place to grab a good vegan baked good, why not try this place? I wouldnt do you wrong. Another wonderful thing about this shop is how they ask you if youll be having your drink to go or not. If not, they serve it in a giant cup & saucer. If its to go, then they give you a paper cup. Helping save a tree here and there, they do their part. Good on them. In retrospect, you can get a cup of coffee anywhere. But if you want an experience....and pie....come here.

Im am extremely disappointed in the the male owner of this shop. To start off im a Montavilla resident living two blocks away with a small business that is also in Montavilla a few blocks away. Today on Dec 06.2014 around 12:00pm i was asked to leave because i was open carrying my personal defense side arm (hand gun). I have been going to Bipartisan for over two years now and im a daily regular for my morning coffee before i open my shop. And i have carried my side arm every one of those days. This shop has many posters stating ones "Rights" on their walls and the shops decor supports ones Rights. Yet i was denied my "Right to bear arms" legally. I have my correct permits and licences to do so and should not be denied the my Rights. I cannot speak on the other owner but the one i dealt with is hypocrite. It saddens me to say that without an apology i will not be returning to do business. I also used to send a lot of my customers there while they waited for me to do there service and that will no longer happen as well.

My house drip coffee was SO WEAK it tasted like tea, and it was a crappy Stumptown roast (ethiopian...practically from beans still green). My wifes iced decaf mocha tasted like someone stirred wet toast in water and added a bit of sugar (cost: $3.75); they also scowled at her when she ordered. If we hadnt had a coupon and had I realized they served "Sumptown", we would never have patronized. [Doesnt Stumptown know that great coffee should be BLACK, not light brown??? Yes, a darker roast kills the BAD acids in coffee you snobs! I worked on coffee chemistry for a national company to improve the flavor...what is wrong with Portland I have no idea other than we pride ourselves in being different, even if it is stupid. Even our northern competition, Seattle, knows that coffee should be dark!]

I love the atmosphere of this place, and the food is delicious (OHHHHH MYYY GODDD THE QUICHE!) But the service is sometimes really just terrible and sometimes mostly ok. Ive had some very surly servers whos eem totally annoyed by my business, and some with great attitudes. They consistently miss up either my drink of my food, which is msotly due to poor communication. But as long as you are polite, theyll hurry to fix it. I dont think the employees are trained very well nor do they know how to work as a team... Ive waited 40 minutes for my food/drink before because they were busy- though there were 6 people behind the counter only 2 seemed to be doing any work. But if you can keep chill and relax, its totally a great hangout despite its flaws!!

Good for me. You wouldnt like it though. Starbux is down the street. Stay away if you love the Constitution, though it hangs on the wall here, amongst the giants of democracy portraiture and other assorted Americana. Paradoxically, one of the owners may be using their private business place as a pulpit against the Constitution! (see 1 star review below.) Unfortunately, citizens have the right to deny you entry to their homes or places of business for any reason. I know that can come as a shock to people who historically have being able to go anywhere unimpeded. Luckily Congress still may not deny anyone a gun, no matter what mental illness you may be coping with. Now thats as American as coconut cherry cream pie.

Not the best experience at all. Because of construction, if you sit at any of the tables by the windows (most of them are), junk will be flying into your cups, mugs, food, etc!!! My strawberry rhubarb pie was served cold (others have mentioned how delicious their warm pies are). Coffee was okay. Had to throw away both, my coffee and the pie because of garbage falling from the ceiling; wasted $10. It was difficult to find a place to sit - the place was pretty busy. Staff seemed clueless and indifferent, which is unfortunate because I was really looking forward to a great experience in this place.

Very trendy, sheik, indie, hipster, ruff around the edges,... Once you get past the facade they make a mean cup of coffee. The seating is adequate but not abundant unless you count the outdoor seating (weather is a factor). The natural lighting is a perk. Back to the coffee I am somewhat picky (as are a lot of my fellow pdx-ers) [Edit: except those reviewers who like Starbucks, this is real coffee] and the combination of their baristas and beans hold up to my tests for flavor, price, presentation, and service. Would recommended, will go again. #OneSmallStep
