This was my first time there. I called to make sure they were open as last time I tried, they didnt open for another 90 minutes, so I took a personal raincheck that day and so today was the day! I spoke with Madalyn over the phone and said there would be about 5 - 6 people. It turned out that there was just 3 of us. Madalyn was all by herself and taking care of about 6 or 7 tables and a large group all by themselves in the back room. Very nice place esthetically for sure! Quite German by U.S. standards! lol. Very quaint with a water wheel fountain in by the bar and authentic German beer steins, artwork and such on the walls and ceilings. Even our server Madalyn was in German attire. Being the only server, Madalyn, was gracious and remembered my name from the phone call for reservations. That made me feel good. While it took a while to get a menu and some initial drinks, we noticed she was all by herself covering the entire place, so very understandable. She would say something to us when she would go by taking care of the others, which was nice. When Madalyn did get to us, she was all apologetic and got right down to business. We ordered 2 sauerbraten and 1 stuffed cabbage dinners. The presentation and flavors were spot on! Ill even go to say better than any German restaurant I have ever been in, and Im now in my 60s! Madalyn suggested an apple liquor for my wife on ice in a tumbler. . . . and that was amazing in flavor and aroma. I will absolutely go there as a staple now for German food here on Long Island. Being I live in North Great River, it is certainly not exactly just around the block but worth the trip. My only gripe is that I waited too long before I finally got there for something to eat! lol. As the saying goes: "Try it, youll like it." Ha haa. . . . . . Thanks Madalyn, we cant wait until next time, hopefully there will be German music playing on that little stage you folks have there! I give this a SOLID 5! ;-) Thanks for a great afternoon Madalyn! See you again. Eric R.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! THE MANAGER WAS RUDE, NO PERSONALITY, TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! We went here last year for my mothers birthday and we were a party of 9 cramped in a little corner even when we had made reservations weeks in advance. On top of that the RUSHED us out. THIS YEAR we returned hoping for a different outcome. Welp it was even WORSE! This year it took they took FOREVER to bring out our food! First of all it took over 1.5 hours to get our meal. The manager with no personality came over and was basically arguing with us that we were upset. Fast forward to a total of 3.5 hours to finally eat our dessert and get the bill (ridiculous) our waitress who didnt smile once the WHOLE NIGHT tried overcharging our card an extra $150!!! Then tried convincing us we were wrong and hiding our 20% gratuity (paid in cash that the waitress was basically hiding in her check holder) that was automatically added to the bill (which was definitely not worth 20% whatsoever). We then confronted the manager again and she basically shrugged her shoulders and didnt offer any compensation! WE WILL NEVER RETURN TO THIS PLACE EVER AGAIN! 1 star and 2 thumbs down! HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!

The atmosphere is impressive. Very nicely decorated. Its usually very crowded. The portions are crazy big with entree prices near $25.. There are fantastic beer choices and nice, live entertainment is common on weekends. It is quite loud here with that and the crowd size, but its part if the charm. Two problems. Hard working, friendly staff, but you can expect 10 minute waits in between waitress sightings. We waited to order drimks, then to order food, then to get doggie bags, then again to het a check. We could have left 20 minutes sooner. Also when the waitress carries food, the plates have food on the bottom because the pprtions are stacked so high. Despite the last two issues, the food, the beer, and the stmosphere explain why there is always a crowd.

What a great experience. The sauerbraten was authentic (I was in Giessen, Germany a year ago and this sauerbraten was as close as I have ever had to what I had there). The service was great. The place was nearly full so they were running at capacity and we didnt wait long for anything. The waitress was cheerful and helped us select two beers that were perfect for us! And I should mention that the first table we were offered was a bit too close to the music for me and after a short five minute wait the host offered us two more places to choose from. You def need reservations and once you have the Village Lanterne experience you will know why. Enjoy; there are few places in the NY area that offer a taste of Germany as great as you will get here.

I love the food here. But when I walked in this afternoon to get lunch with my boyfriend, I noticed the owners support of the Trump administration. While politics have never stopped me from frequenting an establishment before, I cannot, in good conscience support an establishment that publicizes their support of a hateful political movement that has targeted so many people I love. I certainly didnt need to be reminded of it, in the forms of signs and bumper stickers while I am enjoying my German beer. Its a shame, but I will have to take my business elsewhere.

Food used to be really great very tasty, just like german home cooking. Something must have changed with the cooking. It is not the same anymore. The Jägerschnitzel is now served with a white mushroom sauce, that is not The real sauce for that, it is a brown mushroom sauce. And the Goulash is over spiced, served with red cabbage and sauerkraut on the same plate?!? That is absolutely not authentic!! If you want to mix up the goulash, throw some mushroom s, red and green peppers in it ! Otherwise the place is lovely! Liked it a lot better a year ago !!

Took my wife and two of my clients for dinner. The food was fabulous. The baked Brie was terrific, jagerschnietzel was awesome, and desserts were fresh baked. try the black forest cake. Saerbraten was also quite good and was authentic, not just pot roast with spiced gravy over it. I highly recommend this place for authentic german food, just like my mom cooked. My only criticism was it took a while to get the food to the table, so be prepared to wait, dont be in a rush and you will be rewarded with a great meal.

Good soup is a great indicator to tell about a restaurant.Soup is the beginning of the meal for me and if you care enough to make that right everything else usually falls into place. I went into the village lanterne tonight for a quick taste test ordering 2 different soups...the chicken dumpling, and the french onion.... Both were FANTASTIC! I was dancing around the house.I LOVED It. I cant WAIT to go there and try everything else. :-)

Main entrees and beer were good, BUT ONE disappointing item that needs to be addressed was the spaetzel, it was BAD, and must have been sitting in a pot of water for a long time since it tasted like musty water. This is unacceptable to me, spaetzel is cheap and it should be fresh each time its ordered. I will give them another chance since I see many good reviews.
