Today, I had a craving for General Tsos chicken. Ok ok, I know, its not REAL chinese food. Get over it- its what probably 50% of people order at a chinese take-out joint. After reading all the glowing reviews on here, I decided to drive an extra few minutes and try this place. I have been searching for good chinese in the New Brunswick area since I moved here last year, with no luck. I hoped this could be it! I phoned in my order (General Tso, extra crispy, spicy) which was read back correctly. Nice. When I arrive, I see that the place is indeed a hole in the wall. I overhear a customer bragging about how great the food is to the lady behind the counter (who doesnt even smile or accept the compliment), This could be great! They only accept cash, so I went next door and used the ATM (my order was $11.50 which I think is expensive). I finally bring it home (5 minutes) and open it up. The chicken is piping hot and looks delicious... Until I cut it. It is clearly poor quality meat that is very overcooked. It is tough even with a sharp steak-type knife. The taste is dry and bland (even though she confirmed it was supposed to be "spicy") with hardly a hint of flavor. JUST TERRIBLE!!!! I dont know how the rest of the stuff is, but I wont be going back. Overpriced, cash only, rude staff, and dumpy store... no thanks.

Disregard the bad reviews. Since we first discovered this place a few months ago, my housemates and I have become frequent customers. This food here is fast, unique, made up good ingredients, and really stands above and beyond the rest of regional take out places. The food here is slightly more expensive than other local chinese restaurants, but it is superior in quality and plentitude. Much of the kitchen is exposed at the restaurant, and I like that they allow customers too see how they prepare their food. If you go there you can see that they hand make just about everything and use fresh ingredients. The restaurant sparsely decorated and drab. The staff are kurt, and busy, but also kind of endearing. You wont find any better chinese cuisine in or around this city. THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR: -cash only, -the ho fun noodles and sesame chicken are bland and dissatisfying, the take out comes in those stupid, paper, square, containers that drip all over the place and make a mess WHATS GOOD: -everything else.

I absolutely LOVE Mei Meis!!! The restaurant is not much to look at, but the food is incredible! I used to go here with friends from work and it was everybodys favorite restaurant. We would make sure to order the Shrimp with Black Bean Sauce, Chinese Brocolli & then a sweet dish like the Ginger Shrimp. What a great trifecta! The Shrimp with Black Bean Sauce is like no other. Such a rich & yummy sauce. And the shrimp are a nice size. I found the service to be quick & one of the ladies who works there always calls me by name even though I hadnt been back for a while after I had left my old job. That was so nice to be remembered! I believe that they only accept cash. It is a very popular place. I have been going there for over 15 years and the quality of their food has not changed one bit.

This is the picture-perfect definition of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The neighborhood is run-down and the restaurant is in a strip-mall that looks like its on its last legs. And the restaurant has no ambiance whatsoever. But dont be deterred. The food is always fresh and well-prepared. Portions are huge (sometimes too big... you cant just get a small bowl of soup for example) but the prices are reasonable. I always enjoy the hot-n-sour soup, chicken w/ rice noodles and the garlic shrimp. I lived in Somerset, NJ for 8 years and ate here several times a week. Now that Im in VA I stop at Mei Mei whenever I am driving through NJ... and they remember me and greet me warmly. Love me some Mei Mei food!!!

Since Golden Jade was closed, I decided to try this place based on recommendations. The experience started off on the wrong note. They only accept cash, which in 2012 is weird to find a business that doesnt accept credit/debit. Next, the customer service was lacking in warmth and felt robotic and emotionless. The food (General Tso Chicken, roast pork fried rice and fried chicken wings) was not very good. It wasnt over/under seasoned or cooked, it just tasted like the ingredients were of sub par quality. The pork was very fatty. There was more fat than meat on the pieces. I will not be returning to this restaurant.

Unfortunately, some of the worst chinese food Ive ever eaten. I have eaten in over 100 chinese restaurants (my favorite food) in my lifetime. This rates as one of the 5 worst. Everything was greasy. There was a pool of oil at the bottom of the bag of egg rolls. Lo mein tasteless, chicken with garlic sauce tasteless, sweet and sour chicken dry and tasteless. Very expensive and very bad. We threw out most of it. What a waste! They dont accept credit cards. Cash only. There are too many good chinese restaurants in Franklin township to suffer this bad food.

I went to Mei Mei a few months ago from all of the reviews on different site. I was not disappointed, the food is great. Everything I have had is fresh and sooooo good. I have a sensitive stomach and have gotten sick at a few restaurants in the past year. I think people are holding onto food that they would have normally thrown out due to the economy. Mei Mei is the rare exception, I have never gotten sick and my tummy feels good after I eat it. I really think they love what they do there as you can tell looking into the huge kitchen. Great food

The place is a little hole-in-the-wall, but the food MORE than makes up for any loss in decor or ambiance. The staff is friendly, extremely fast (my food was ready in half the time I expected), and the prices are great. The only reason they dont get five stars from me is because they are CASH ONLY -- and the sign is on the back counter, where I didnt notice until I came up to pay. It wasnt a problem, but I dont normally carry enough cash for two people. So if you want excellent Chinese food, come here, but hit the ATM first.

Great little place. What the decor lacks the food makes up for. Cheap! Eat in served family style. Sizzling Rice Soup, Steamed or Fried Dumplings, Ribs, Moo shoo for appetizers. Young Chow Rice Noodles is a must. All the regular items are good. Outstanding items include Tangerine Beef, Shrimp in Black Bean sause, Pepper Shrimp, General Taos Chicken, Lobster in Ginger sauce. For a special occasion order a 5lb lobster a few days in advance. Caution - The Chinese eggplant has a cleaning effect the next day.

Youre likely to run into people in Mei Meis that have been coming for almost 30 years and for good reason. The food is good and plentiful, and just the way mama used to make it (if youre mama is from China). You wont come for the romantic ambience though, as it does mostly take out, although with seating available if you want to eat in.
