I was just here last night. My friend suggested it, she is a local that eats here a few times a week and swears by this place. I was very hungry, and really looking forward to this meal. I ordered the porterhouse, medium rare. It came already looking pretty burnt on the outside, and there was a little wooden toothpick sticking out of the center of it that had "M.RARE" written on it. When I went to pull the toothpick out, the steak was so tough on the inside that the entire thing came up with it, and then flopped back down on to the plate. I cut to the inside of the steak and saw that it has a warm center. It was cooked to medium well. Despite my hunger, at $30 I was expecting the steak to be cooked a little closer to what I requested. I sent it back and asked if it could be re done. I understand that these things happen sometimes, and was very polite. The waiter was very polite as well. What happened next was the worst service I have ever received in a restaurant. The manager, Diego, came back with plate in hand and asked me what was wrong with the steak. I said that it was overcooked. He pointed to where I cut open in the middle, to the half inch of redish pink still left on this gigantic, 22oz piece of meat, and told me that I was wrong. I said that if that was what medium rare looked like to him, then could I have another one, only cooked rare? At this point Diego refused to provide me with any sort of reasonable service. He insisted that I was wrong and that I should order something else from the menu. If the other two people sitting with me were not eating their meals in this moment, I would have left the restaurant. I ordered a soup instead and ate it while watching Diego high five his coworkers with a spoiled appetite. I wasnt charged for the steak, but I was charged for the soup. I have never been treated so badly at a restaurant before.

My husband and I USED to LOVE Tops Diner for their delicious food but they are LIARS and have horrible service! Our business is in Newark, we order from them about once a week or so. I always rave about them to everyone in Newark. And I am so mad at them right now.... This literally all happened within the past hour.... I called, placed an order for 2 goat cheese spinach salad (my husbands favorite, he always orders this and usually he makes the call orders, I decided to get the same), 1 with candied walnuts, 1 without and dressing on the side. I called back and requested grilled chicken to be added on both. Few mins. later, my husband picked up the order and when he arrived to our place of business, we realized both salads have bacon. We dont/cant eat bacon. I admit it was my fault because I didnt read their menu, I just called and asked for the salad because he always orders that salad, so I never knew that they usually put bacon on it. So I called, was transferred to a woman. I explained I didnt realize the order comes with bacon and we cant eat bacon. She said its fine, just bring both salads and well make another 2 for you without bacon. I told her it would take some time before my husband can come back, but the salads are untouched, she said take your time. About 20-30 mins. pass and my husband returns with with the 2 salads.... and she wont DO AS SHE SAID and give him 2 new salads without cost OR take the salads and give him his money back because I admitted it was my fault..... SORRY FOR BEING HONEST lady!!!! And THANK YOU FOR BEING A LIAR AND TAKING BACK WHAT YOU SAID!!!!!! YOU CANT PROMISE A CUSTOMER SOMETHING AND THEN GO BACK ON YOUR WORD.... YOU ARE SO CHEAP!! I WILL NEVER EVER ORDER FROM YOU GUYS EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

They provided to us tonight that they care about one thing and one thing only, themselves. This place cares only about one thing and thats how much money they can steal with their overpriced food. Was there for a few hours only to overhear the waiters trying to hit on the waitresses that work there. Rude comments like, "hey do you want to feel my vaine" and "oh this girl wants to ...." right in front of the customrers. The owners dont care about their customers and they are more concerned about turning over tables to make profit. And if your not watching the bill, they try to sneak in a 15% charge just for showing up. So if your not careful you could be paying 2x as much for gratutity. The wait staff are nothing more than 2 faced trying to say "oh how much can i get from this table and that table". Paid $50 for 2 pieces of chicken and a piece of french toast and they had the absolute gull to come up to our table and say we were taking to much time" and mind you this table barely fit 2 people. Their ego is so big their name says it all. How easily it would be to open another restraunt in the next mall, match their food and charge decent prices. The place is 55% above what you can get at other places. You pay for the hipe, you pay for them to line their pockets with your money. They treat their employees like garbage and dont care about their customers. Anyone that doesnt believe it just go there a few times and watch all around you. Theres alot of other better places than that place. Tuesday morning we have a friend that works at a local newspaper and were going to ask them to validate our findings.

I have been going to Tops Diner for the past 16 years with my friends, co-workers, family and business partners. I would brag about this diner to everyone, but not anymore...due to my experience tonight. I ordered a pineapple mojito (Ive ordered these here before and they were always great) and after struggling to drink the beverage, I finally gave it to our server because the glass smelled like a raw egg. Our server was kind enough to tell the bartender and manager. The bartender visited our table to find out what the problem was. After I informed her about what the glass smelled like, the server came back and told me that they could not re-do the beverage and that I could only have soft drinks and that this was a "new policy." I was confused...I told them that I would pay for the drink served in a dirty glass and the second, but they refused to serve me a beverage in a clean glass. I asked to speak to the manager and he informed me of the same. I asked him, if my salad plate was dirty, would he send it back to the kitchen and leave me to watch my friend eat her food? He was short and to the point stating they would not serve me another alcohol beverage. My friend said, "its like you are punishing her for a dirty glass and you wont even serve her a glass of wine?" The manager said "no, new policy." I used to work in the restaurant industry and I know how hard it is to make all customers happy but after offering to pay for the dirty glass, I was shocked with this outcome. Now that I am in the entertainment industry, I will be sure to tell my peers how I was treated tonight.
