If you dont want service but want to pay top dollar go here . You stand in line to order at the cashier . She takes the order gives you a marker for the table . The food came out a order at a time . Wife received her croissant. Two minutes later Daughter received her roll . So we are sitting waiting for my order and drinks . My daughter received her hot chocolate (not hot) tasted like swiss miss hot cocoa . Another 5 minutes later I get the biscuits and gravy . Still no drinks for me and the wife . I ask the server about drinks ? She gives me a can of coke for my wife and a empty cup for coffee and just points at the coffee warmers/containers on the counter . So I go to get coffee one pot empty the other luke warm coffee. The Pork and bison sage gravy and biscuit not very tasty plan dull no real flavor to it at all. No real seating for more than two at a time had to push two tables together to seat three. Some people may like it but not for us . If im paying $2.25 for a CAN of coke $4.00 per croissant $2.75 for a cup of cold coffee $11.15 for one biscuit and tasteless gravy. I forgot how much the COLD hot cocoa was. Had to be 3 or 4 dollars bill was $29 and change. But really poor service cold coffee, canned soda, tasteless biscuits and gravy. then this is the place for you . Much better food at the Uptowner on Grand Ave or the Capital View on Smith St. Wont be back to the Colossal on Como Ave ever. Probably wont try the other locations either.

This is easily one of the best places for breakfast in the Twin Cities. Lunch and dinner is pretty good too. All the food is made using high quality ingredients, creatively prepared. Portions are large. At breakfast, the cinnamon rolls are tasty and immense, omelets are flavorful, and flappers (pancakes, served with real maples syrup) are amazing. A single large pancake with fruit ($6.5) is quite the meal on its own. This year the restaurant won the City Pages "Best Neighborhood Cafe in St. Paul" and it deserved it. Usually its not too crowded but It can get a touch busy during weekend breakfast prime-time, so larger groups may have trouble getting a seat.

Went here at 11. Nice atmosphere: Clean, not too loud, well decorated. Youll walk in and order from a register and are given a sign. They have a waiting area in the back, where youll wait to be seated. They handed out free samples of their white chocolate pumpkin muffins while we were waiting, which were really good. Took about 15 minutes to be seated. We sat at a counter. Staff was plesant. Manager also gave me a free sample of there cold press from the tap. Be aware their "flappers" or pancakes are yeast pancakes. They taste very doughy. While they are good I would only get the single, not a stack. They are not for everyone. Ill go again sometime!

Great food and friendly service. I ordered a pancake with fruit, expecting a fruit cup, and instead a beautifully arranged mountain of fresh blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, banana and apples arrived on top of my pancake. The yeast pancakes had a fresh donut flavor, though I wish they would offer a buckwheat or hearty grain version. That would be five stars. Before, Ive had amazingly flavorful frittatas and their homemade biscuits are sublime , crunchy exterior with warm squishy centers, the best conduit for butter and honey. Choose a seat close to the coffee, because it can be a bit of an obstacle course to get your own refill.

Wont be back. My wife and I eat out for breakfast a lot and this place is bottom of the list. The food was good but absolutely no service....... You even need to get your own coffee!!! If you have to get your own coffee, they should at least make it good enough to motivate you to get more. I have also never had biscuits and gravy with dry biscuits and eggs over gravy on the side. Isnt the gravy supposed to be on the biscuits? Also, if there is more than two of you dont even think about going because they really only have seating for two. That being said... Maybe Im just not hipster enough to enjoy bad coffee and no service.

If you know what to order, this place will probably work ok. We had breakfast. Their breads and eggs were excellent. The sausage patty was advertised as pork, but also had bison in it, and was dry and had little flavor. I didnt eat it. Wife had a frittata which was a very sorry excuse for a frittata. There was no feta in it as advertised; it was very small and over cooked. At $9.50, really a ripoff, since theres no meat in it. They serve Cooks sparkling wine; about the worst bottle of wine you can get. (They were out of Prosecco) We may go back, knowing now what not to order.

Came here with my fiance for a hearty breakfast after a night of drinking. He ordered flappers (pancakes), I ordered a bacon, egg, cheddar sandwich with a flapper as the bread. Neither of us liked the flappers at all: They were doughy and not tasty...possibly not even all the way cooked. The coffee was also way too strong and not drinkable. We ended up leaving and heading to yet another restaurant because my fiance couldnt eat more than a few bites of what he had. No complaints about the actual service though. It was minimal.

I loved this place when it was a quirky, tiny little place with only 6 seats. Their flappers were to die for. I was afraid that their new location and larger space wouldnt keep up the quality, but boy was I wrong. I recently visited their new location, and the food was even better than I remembered. Their flappers are the best pancakes in town! They have many more options now than ever before, and they do them all just as well. I highly recommend this place for breakfast almost any time of the day. So good!

We had the meatloaf sandwich and marinated pork sandwich with a side salad. The meatloaf was fantastic with a side of bacon cheeseburger soup, which was also tasty. The pork was overcooked and sliced with the grain making it tough and dry. The flavor was good but it was hard to get past the dryness of the meat. If the meat slices were slightly thicker and cooked properly it would be outstanding. Ill give Colossal another try because the meatloaf was awesome but I wont order the marinated pork.

Unique, quirky food spot. Good food. Wasnt a fan of ordering at the cashier stand and paying (and leaving a tip, since I didnt have cash) before eating and being served. Thankfully the tip was deserved since the servers were quick and the food was very good. You also have to get your own water and coffee from the water/coffee stand. I guess you are more tipping on the food then you are the server (they only bring your food out). Not your typical sit-down restaurant.

When we ordered our food the woman asked right away if we needed a highchair and got a table setup for us while we ordered. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and man it was good. My wife got the short stack and it was more than she could eat. They were some of the best pancakes we have had though. Hard to find with a small "Cafe" sign as the only indicator. It is behind the post office. Totally worth checking out.
