(My statements are grounded in evidence as well as eye witness accounts, this is not made up slander but the truth) They serve great coffee along with a cup of racist alcoholic abusive managers and owners. I got wrongfully terminated for no reason, no write up, no warning and was blamed by racist alcoholics for the reason their business is failing as if theyre not abusive owners who have already previously had an ENTIRE staff quit at once in protest of their behavior. They claimed I had "multiple write ups" from the previous manager which I was never told about, never signed, and were not legally and professionally documented. They did not follow the very procedures they detail in the employee manual that they wrote in the process of my "write ups." When I asked to see the paper work and my "multiple write ups" the owner Melody said she "left them at home". They took my shifts away, decreased my hours and were informally and unethically punishing me without my notice while the entire staff was aware but me. Im the only employee on staff that was punished and who had to adhere to the "rules" set in place while my coworkers audacious behavior and job performances were promoted and ignored. They used me, the first black female employee (who they said "was not a good fit" what about me, a black woman, isnt a "good fit"?) as a scape goat for their utter unprofessionalism and unethical behavior towards their employees. This establishment was failing without the influence of one black girl. Like I said, the coffee is great, but the manner in which this establishment is run is disgusting. I was one of the most senior employees and In the year that I was there I saw a whole new staff come in and out about three times.

The baristas seem to know what they are doing and the atmosphere is really chill but I have my qualms. First their roast they use for their espresso is not great. I always get an espresso or a macchiato and I can tell you their beans are just not their for making an EXCELLENT cup of jo. I brew/extract my own espresso all the time from home and have tried many different roasters and can confidently say the baristas at Ugly Mug produce an expresso texture and flavor profile that is indicative of an overall proper brewing technique and machine settings but poor and slightly, SLIGHTLY, burnt beans. Its an overdeveloped flavor with hints of cinnamon and coco backed by a bitter/burnt overtone and a TINY twinge of sour. ( the sour part being more likely related to brew tempt but Its been present in every cup Ive had from them). Its a heavy and bold espresso roast. I feel this is very unfair to the baristas, I watch them tamp the espresso, extract, stretch the milk, tap/swirl the milk, and then add it to the expresso. Then they give the finished product a tap, they REALLY give attention to every cup and Im talking about the coffee not just the latte art. I also have had their bagel sandwiches, which are VERY GOOD but $5 seem a little high for a bagel with some simple veggies and some cream cheese. They have other bagel sandwiches with meat but I still feel they are overpriced by $1.50 or so. But still, Very good! Lastly, their seating could be a LOT more comfortable, and Im not asking for anything special. Almost every chair/table combo Ive used there has had something OBVIOUSLY wrong with it..... such as the teetering table Im using at this MOMENT!

Your typical local hipster coffee joint. Too cold in the winter time-- not sure if its because they need better insulation, better heating, or people are constantly opening the door (its a small place). The coffee is the fruity, bright coffee thats en vogue in these kinds of places now. If thats your jam, then you will like their drinks! If its not (which its not mine), stick with their teas or with their rich lattes that mask the bright tanginess of their hipster roasts. I love the Mexican latte. Theyve got great bagel sandwiches, Ill give them that. The Killer Bagel is my favourite. They use fresh ingredients in tasty combinations. Theyve also got a decent selection of baked treats, but that may have changed since last I was in (I heard they were getting rid of their pastry case). They also have some cute, over-priced souvenirs for sale, like mugs and t-shirts, and stickers. Standard prizes as far as drinks. The ambiance is poetical late anti-capitalist with a sprinkling of faux anarcho-Marxist. Theyve got some books to borrow in case some lout had the nerve to show up without one. The window seating is the best, objectively. The staff is friendly and often changes (the latter owing to the owner being beastly, or so I heard). Even though I tried not to go here as often as I did, I am just a sucker for hipster cafés. If you are, too, and you find yourself in Ypsi, the Mug is a cant-miss.

Went in this morning and ordered the Tanzania regular coffee with an add shot of espresso and it was AWFUL. Now mind you, I know my coffee and I LOVE coffee and this coffee was so bitter and spoiled tasting it was ridiculous. The shot of espresso had obviously expired which means it sat out for too long and the air ruined it, it turns the flavor bitter and ruins the drink. Any barista with any type of skill knows not to let the espresso sit for more than 10 seconds or this will happen. Plus the barista was rude when I asked for cold half n half PS as a former barista, you should NEVER leave milk on the condiment bar for more than one hour it is a health code violation. Their carafe on the condiment bar with half and half in it was proudly labeled "good from 7am to 11am" WOW definitely will not be coming back here sad to say I am very disappointed and I should have gone to SWEETWATERS just up the street

This place is nice. They roast their beans there on the spot, always have good music playing, and good Wi-Fi speeds. True to the name, of youre going to chill out there for a while, you can get your drink in any one of a few dozen very ugly mugs. Apparently the owner just started collecting all the mugs nobody else wanted anymore. Everything from chipped and cracked ceramic beasts, to worlds greatest aunt novelty mugs. You can plop down in the kind of kitchen furniture that was chic in the 80s and listen to the freshest indie grooves the cool kids dont want to tell you about. Some people might write it off as just some hipster joint. Those people have no idea how to have a good time, and theyre sad with life. Check this place out.

When I arrived, I was second in line to order my drink. The employee at the register spent a good amount of time just making small talk with the women in line in front of me. When it was finally my turn to order, they told me they didnt brew decaf and didnt even carry decaf beans. I ended up ordering an Americano and then waited a very long time for it to be brewed (and watched it being brewed on awfully dirty machinery). All told, it took me about fifteen minutes from walking in the door to getting my drink even though there was only one order ahead of me. And I didnt even get my first-choice drink. The employees were unprofessional and the selection was limited. Would not go again.
