Bad Customer Service but....I should start by saying that I have been buying cakes at The Home Bakery for years, but this will be my last. The cake is usually above average, but the customer service is the worst! I would have given ZERO stars but that was not an option. I ordered a cake three months in advance of a birthday party. After receiving the RSVPs, I realized I would need more cake. I called a week before the party and ordered an additional side cake to make sure that we had enough. The person on the phone said "no problem" and the cakes would be ready on Saturday and I could pick them up any time between noon and two. I arrived at around 1:30 to pick up the cakes and the salesperson came out of the kitchen with just one cake. When I asked about the second cake, she said "This is it." I explained that I had called back for an additional cake for 12 extra people and she said "Your order was for one cake and here it is. You cant just walk in on a Saturday and expect us to bake you a cake." After some discussion, she said that she had another cake in the back that could be ready in twenty minutes. She made it sound like she was doing me a favor making the additional cake that was already part of my order. I had other last minute stops to make to get ready for the party, so after 30 minutes of waiting, I was getting a little frustrated. When I asked if it was ready, the saleswoman seemed irritated that I would even ask about the cake. After 55 minutes, she came out with a plain undecorated cake way larger than I said I needed. I said "How about a discount since you made me wait almost an hour and its way larger than I said I needed and you lost my order." She went into the back and a male baker came out. He said "The order didnt say anything about an extra cake and how do I know you didnt just come in here and say that to get a discount" We said you could pick up the cake between noon and two and its two twenty-five, so you only waited twenty-five minutes. " I couldnt believe the tone he was using and what he was accusing me of. Both the male baker and female manager were yelling loudly at me. Also, I had been there almost an hour, so his time argument didnt even make sense. At this point I had already paid, so he told me "Take your cake and get out of here." I told them that I felt this was poor customer service and that I was disappointed with the treatment. Another lady also said " Get out of here we dont need you here". It reminded me of the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld. The store is so busy on a Saturday that the salespeople are almost angry at the customers. There are several bakery options in the area. Some are better, some are less expensive, and some are better AND less expensive. I guess they just dont care about loosing a customer. I felt I was kind but direct and did not deserve this treatment especially after spending a great deal of money. I WILL NEVER ORDER ANOTHER CAKE FROM HOME BAKERY AGAIN.

Home Bakery has been my bakery for more than twenty years. Ive ordered approximately 75 cakes in that amount of time. I have always been very pleased with the decorating as well as the quality of the cakes. When my kids were little, I would just suggest a theme and the decorators would decide what would look best. I was ALWAYS thrilled with how the cakes turned out. I also ordered a wedding cake for my sister and she loved it. It was easy to work with the staff, and I was given many choices so the cake was truly custom made. (By the way, "ajane" I think youre pretty demanding! I also read your scathing review of Marias Bridal!!) The people who work at the bakery have always been super helpful and polite. If you havent tried Home Bakery, give them a try! Not only do they make delicious cakes....moist and fresh with the best buttercream ever, but their other desserts are equally wonderful; especially their fruit tarts and brownies. One of the other reviews mentioned Christines Bakery in Clinton Township. I guess its just a matter of taste, but Ive been very disappointed with products from Christines. Their pastries and cakes are very pretty, but also dry and rather tasteless. Its hard to find a bakery that can provide gorgeous cakes that actually taste good....Home Bakery delivers!!

We worked with Heather to design our wedding cake and she was absolutely amazing. She was very patient in understanding our designs and explained to us all the different options we had for flavors. The cake itself was delicious - very moist and flavorful! It was absolutely beautiful and turned out exactly how we discussed. We also rented a cake stand from them, which gave the display a little something extra. It was all beautiful! I also ordered a groom’s cake from them as a surprise for my now husband and we had it at the rehearsal dinner. Since I was from out of town, I couldn’t secretly meet with Heather so I called her and sent her photos to explain my design. It turned out better than I imagined! My only issue was when I picked it up, some of the fondant design on the sides of the cake came off and was attached to the box. We were able to easily put it back on and I take full responsibility for that since I didn’t want to pay to have them deliver it. So I recommend getting delivery because our wedding cake didn’t have any smudges and it was delivered.

Giving it 1 star because ZERO stars is not an option. My husband and his family have used Home Bakery for 20 years, but we will never come here again. Last weekend we ordered a cake for my Mother In Laws 70th birthday. We asked for a cake showing birds and trees. It looked like some kind of 2nd grade abstract art picture. There was not one recognizable bird on the cake. We salvaged the LOOK of the cake by going to Hobby Lobby and redoing it ourselves. We kept saying "but it will taste delicious". WRONG! It was inedible, it was dry, it was hard. It was supposed to be a marble cake, but it was a weird shade of grey. As if the batter was stirred or something. Absolutely the worst cake I have ever eaten, let alone paid $75 for. We threw 3/4 of it away. Next birthday will be a Meijers cake that i decorate myself.

Ive been here three times now: twice for Paczkis on Fat Tuesday, and once during the Kris Kringle Market in December when I got an adorable snowman donut. The paczkis come second only to my Polish grandmas homemade ones -- but since I cant get those anymore, these are my new favorite. Im not sure of the name of the one I get, but they describe it as a "cronut paczki" with their vanilla bean pastry cream -- and its seriously incredible. Ive also had the chocolate-covered custard filled, and the lime raspberry. The lime raspberry is sweet and tart, a perfect companion to the rich chocolate chocolate-covered. The snowman donut was as delicious as it was cute. It was a cake donut with white chocolate ganache, and I would purchase again with or without the chocolate chip eyes and fondant carrot nose.
