This is my favorite breakfast spot in the area. From the unique waitstaff to the tasty food, this is one restaurant you MUST visit if you are going to or near Salem, MA. Pros: 1. The food is AMAZING! If you’re going out to eat, what’s the one thing you require? That the food taste GOOD, right? Well, if you love breakfast food, this place will not disappoint. 2. Large menu. Going with picky eaters? No problem. Lots of traditional as well as unique choices on this menu. Something for everyone. 3. Large portion sizes. Prepare to leave stuffed. 4. Affordable. Not as cheap as an iHOP, no, but affordable and that of a typical diner. 5. Décor. Interesting décor. Make sure you look all around the restaurant. Check out all the interesting stuff on the walls, tables, and even ceiling. They have quite the salt and pepper shaker collection! 6. Atmosphere. A nice mix of people stop to eat here. When you walk in, you pick your own table. 7. Funny, laid back waitstaff. Most of the waitstaff wear non-traditional attire and colors. The waitstaff always have quite the flare! But don’t worry, they’re super friendly and easy-going. Cons: 1. No parking. Probably the only thing that sucks is you have to find parking on the street. Depending on the time of day you go, you can have trouble finding a spot. But don’t let that discourage you! 2. Small. This is a fairly small place. So again, you may have trouble finding a seat during a busy time. My husband and I have been here many times over the years. My favorite food there is the chipotle hash eggs benedict. Mmmmm!

We love living in down town Salem. Great places to eat like Gulu-Gulu, Reds and A&J Bakery. So we wanted to like Ugly mug. Waiting on a Sunday morning at a new/trendy eatery is the norm, but while we waited the man at the front beverage counter (later learned he is the owner), repeated grabbed the straws he inserted into drinks by the unwrapped drinking end. I quietly pointed it out to the hostess who spoke with the individual (the owner himself). The response was to avoid eye contact and slammed a couple doors and spoons. Later he made more drinks but used a lower shelf, apparently to keep his actions from view. But standing a few feet away showed that he was grabbing straws by the drinking end... amazingly in this day and age. Later we noticed that couples who came in well after we did were being seated. We asked the hostess about our place in line and she looked away and said she called our name a while ago. The 2 of us had been standing less than 4 feet from where she called out names and never called ours. Her next action was to take the couple behind us who recently came in and told us, "I will try to seat you as soon as I can". Mug is a shiny package that all residents wished well. Neither the owner, the staff we met nor the behavior they exhibit represent the great spots to eat in Salem.

Great Service in a VERY busy place! I finally decided to wait for a table the 3rd time I have tried to get in. This place is always packed at breakfast on Saturday morning. They told me 30 mins, I think it was less, but they also will make you one of their specialty coffees or drinks, bring you a Juice or water while you wait. I had the cowboy Breakfast and the pulled pork was delicious as are the Sweet Potato home fries. The Biscuit was a little hard but I sopped up my egg, and I would probably take a pass on that biscuit next time. Also, at the table was an order of the"Bird in a Nest " Eggs cooked in the center of a piece of French Toast. I would have enjoyed it more if I had told them to cook the egg a bit longer. The Bacon was delicious as are the Regular Home Fries and I was really happy with the service staff. Definitely go there again.

The Ugly Mug was recommended to us by local skaters in Peabody. It didnt disappoint! The menu is so inventive, duck confit and waffles, wwwhat?!? I had Joe’s Fish Prints Dueling Crustaceans (crab cake benedict) and it was off the hook great. My son had the blueberry pancakes and magic butter (ask your server!) and the blueberries were so fresh, they literally popped in his mouth (purple teeth!) The sweet potato home fries are fantastic! Id order them as a main, if I was local. I have to say, the best part of the experience was our server, "The Prom Queen." She was so friendly without gushing, just a really funny, pleasant person that opened up to some geeky, hungry tourists and started our day off right. We left feeling like we not only got great food, but some insight to the great folks of Salem, Mass. A+++++

Its a cute little place, the people are nice and friendly and I like the idea of having a variety of coffee mugs but the food is not good! Too much pepper on the eggs and the homefries werent cooked all the way through. Some were hard, others were not as hard but none of them were soft. The seasoning was way off. Some were seasoned too much and some were not seasoned at all. I wouldnt go back again! Reds has always been and will always be the best breakfast spot in town and will always be my first choice for breakfast!

Found this diner thanks to google on a recent trip. The PELT was a good sandwich but was dry and needed more sauce or (1) less piece of bread on it. Elvis waffle was good but overwhelming with the amount of chocolate put on it. The chipotle hash was just ok, needed more texture to it and more brisket - I like a hash with a little bit of a bite, this was more of a mashed sweet potato hash. Coffee was very good andsays its from a local source.

The atmosphere is really cool, staff is very nice and food is great! We only spent 2 days in Salem - we came here for breakfast on the 1st day and enjoyed it so much that we came back again the next morning. The drinks were all great and the food was unique and delicious. They were even able to accommodate us as a group of 8 when they were very busy. Well definitely be coming back the next time we make the trip!

Waited an hour for a table and the people i had conversation with that came in later behind my party were seated first. When asked why we were told were just extremely busy and that they werent who we thought they were as we watched the waitress cross them off below our party on the board. Go to Debs diner. Much better service! Lying to waiting customers who are watching everything is just bad practice!

Waiter was nice. Food was underwhelming. The red and green peppers in the omelette were poorly prepared and undercooked. The home fries were random hunks of potatoes (had to cut with knife) flavor of old oil. Bread or toast was dry with no butter. Felt like maybe everyone had been up too late the night before. Disappointed because i had eaten there in the past and it was pretty good.

The word is out on one of Salems best places to have brunch. Still love the occasional weekday meal here when its not massively crowded, but theres a great reason for the lines, the food is fantastic. The Eggs Benedict Comberbach are amazing, get the sweet potato home fries and the chipotle hash. All pancakes and waffles are great as well. Couldnt love this place more, its just that good.
